[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Of course only a VZW/BB insider would have a real answer to your question. But given the age of this conversation and the couple of others found here on Android Central it seems a reasonable assumption to make.

If the G3 is any example. it could be quite some time after the Note 4 is introduced before BB has it to ship. Not being an insider I'm just guessing...
Great point about the shipping. Hadn't thought about that

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am on a legacy 700 min family plan and it didn't ask or prompt me to change plans when I tried to activate the new device. I just selected the new phone from the list of previously used phones and it worked.

Odd, I'm on the same plan. Did you do yours recently? I did exactly what you did a couple days ago (and tried again today) and I hit this screen once I try to activate it on the UDP line:

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Did you click on the link for "Why do I need a different Messaging/Data plan?"? What does it say? It looks like you're coming from a BlackBerry. There must be some differences compared to coming from another Android device.

I have seen this screen before when looking into changing the number of texts on my plan, but I think unlimited data was still one of the data options.

Oh, as to your question on when I did all this - it was last night and this morning.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

"The device you're activating is not compatible with the Data plan you currently have. Some devices require specific plans. In order to begin using your device, you need to select a new Data plan."

It looks like this may be a SIM/previous phone issue; the line I want to upgrade has a 3G Blackberry Bold 9650. I did some testing, and activating the new phone on another UDP line with newer (Android) phones gives me a page telling me to simply swap SIMs. Switching phones between two UDP lines with the newer phones also works without having to change plans, whereas switching between two UDP lines with different generations of phone requires a plan change.

While all my phones ostensibly have the same UDP plan it seems Verizon's system makes a differentiation between plans on an older 3G phone vs 4G, hence my 3G SIM/plan not working on the newer 4G phone either. Seems like I am out of options!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Looks like you found the problem. When I upgraded from a BlackBerry Storm about three years ago, I didn't have a problem as unlimited data was still the norm. I don't have any ideas for you; perhaps someone else can help. Good luck!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I got a solution for you. Call Verizon and order a nano sim. If the rep says they can't do it say OK and call back. They will ship it you for free in 2 business days. Than go to amazon and order a Sim adapter. When the Sim arrives use the adapter you to convert it into a micro Sim and activate it on your line. Once done order m8 and just take your Sim out and remove the adapter and install it into m8.

So, I've already received my M8 and I'm wondering...

1) Remove sim that came with M8

2) Install M8 sim into Thunderbolt

3) Call Verizon to have the new sim activated on my current phone

4) Install now activated nano sim into M8

5) Profit????

Don't laugh, I didn't realize that a mini sim couldn't be cut down (I bought a cutter) to a nano. I use 25-30 GB monthly so keeping my UDP is paramount.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has had success via the above method.

Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I ordered a phone on my line and should have it soon.

My wife has an iPhone 4s. Assuming this is still possible when the new iPhone comes out this fall, could I theoretically upgrade hers the same way?

the iPhone 4s has a micro sim and I would assume since the 5, 5s and 5c all use nano that any new devices will as well. That's the only hurdle I can see, getting the micro down to sim.

Is my only option to cut the card down? Is there any way to get a nano sim from VZW before the new phone is ordered?

You would need an entirely new sim because the 4s sim is not Lte ( and used for intensional travels) which is needed for iPhone 5 and all iphones moving forward. You could get a cheap Lte phone and request a new sim for that phone from verizon.

I have unlimited data under a family plan at the moment. Is it possible for me to go into the Best Buy store with my mother (who does not have unlimited) and have her upgrade her phone, then after doing so swap that phone over to my line without it effecting my data plan? If I do this I would be paying a hundred dollars less than ordering it on the website (which is a lot at the moment).

I get paid tomorrow so please let me know! Thanks!

I totally messed this up. I'm probably one of the least technical people out there but after reading all these post I thought I had it down. I was wrong.

I called Verizon and mentioned I was getting a Droid Maxx (this was a ruse) so I could get a nano SIM. Verizon said they could not send me a new card. Their reason was that my phone (Droid Incredible 2) is 3G and the system would not let them send out a 4G card. I went all the way to tier 2 support and they said I would have to bring the Droid Maxx into a store to actually get a nano SIMs.

Is there any way around this? Should I not have tried saying I have another phone? You mentioned calling back if I call again would I have better luck?

Yes, I can always cut my micro sims down but I was trying to avoid that. Also, I have two lines with UDP that I want to get new M8 phones for. When I order new M8 phones from BB can I order two in one transaction or do I have to place individual orders (one for each line)?

Ah I see that makes sense.

Would it be possible to just ask Verizon for a nano sim for 4G even if the iPhone 4 is 3G?

Yes that is fine, you are renewing her contract not yours. If you have any phone in hand and did not use your line upgrade to get it you can put it on your line without it affecting your plan. You are not tricking them, they allow this, you can do it in store and tell them exactly what you are doing and they will do it. Don't even activate it on her line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think I just kept unlimited data on two simultaneous upgrades. No extra line needed. No trip to Best Buy. No cutting SIM cards. Not even picking up new SIM cards.

Online, I went through with normal upgrades on both lines, requesting a Droid MAXX and an HTC One M8. I upgraded both separately so that I wasn't forced to enroll in Share Everything. Instead, both numbers stayed on the Nationwide plan. I did have to mark a 2GB line for each upgrade when getting the phones, seeming like I'd lose unlimited. The phones arrived today. I had requested the phone I want on her line and the phone she wanted on my line. Then I activated them online but put them on the opposite lines from how I ordered them. I treated them as if they were any phone I picked up from a 3rd party. The SIM cards that came with the phones worked fine during activation - I didn't have to get new ones. Both phones are now working and My Verizon still says I have unlimited data. The contracts have been extended 2 years. Unless there's something that is going to time out and turn off the unlimited data in the next week or two, that appears to have worked.

I did this based on the suggestion of one helpful Verizon rep on the phone. I tried calling many other times to get confirmation and possibly have someone walk me through it, but everybody else I talked to in chat or on the phone said I had to buy full retail.

Oh - there was one slightly tricky part. When I went to activate the phones, it defaults to ask if I want to activate the new phone they shipped me. There's a link to instead go to another page where you can activate a different phone. It's a sentence at the end of the paragraph - not a large button or anything like that, so it might be easy to overlook. Then choose the radio button to activate a phone that you haven't had on that number previously.

Confirming that this method worked for me as well. I have two UDP Nationwide 1400 plans, both upgrade eligible. My wife wanted the G3, so I used MY available upgrade, and got the phone for the $99 price...using Verizon's website ( I did not transfer upgrades). I went through the motions of having to change my plan, and selected the 2GB option. Once the phone arrived, I logged into my acct, clicked on "Activate or Switch Devices", selected my wife's line to do the activation on, and clicked on the radio button saying "Activate Device", then the radio button for activating a device that has not been used on this account. From there, I did swap out SIM cards, and used the one that was in my wife's Razr, although it doesn't sound like that's necessary. And that's it, done. Kept both UDP plans in tact, and she has a new subsidized phone, my line has a new 2 yr contract, and she still has her upgrade available.

I will do this again once I see the new Note 4, and iPhone 6, and decide what I want.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok, so its been a week or two since i was able to swap my upgrade to my wife's line and still keep my udp. So almost every day i check up online or mobile app to see if my udp has been affected. To this day it hasn't so i've been happy! Anywho, I did notice something that kept catching my eye though. Everytime i log in, it shows that i have the g3 on my line but, it also show that i still have an upgrade. so today i put it to the test. I tried using that upgrade and transfering to my wife's line once again, and it let me go through all of the checkout! it sent me a confirmation and everything. It is yet to be shipped, but i'll get back to you guys when i find out what will happen! fingers crosses! Has anyone ever gone through this?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

im sorry to sound redundant, I have an upgrade on my udp line and i have a dummy line. what steps should i take right now. I want the g3 but i know BB isnt shipping so what would be my best option in keeping udp and getting a shiny new toy (ultimate goal is keeping a active contract thus avoiding the potential throttling. my current phone is the moto x) im looking for a recommendation and a dummy friendly explination but any response would be much appreciated <3

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

i had the same scenario, just go on verizon website, log in and check your line. if it says upgrade available now, click on upgrade my line. then it will take you to a page where it allows you to select if you want to transfer the upgrade to another line on the account. from there, then you would be able to " transfer the upgrade. follow the steps. if you complete and get it home, then make sure you throw away the sim card they ship you. hopefully the sim card from the moto x fits on the g3, that should take care of everything without loosing udp.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

so then, dont even try BB's method? and it doesnt fit moto x is nano and g3 is micro. so i wouldnt get defaulted to 2gb right? im thinking of doing which ever method works when i get home tonight. i was thinking BB if possible since its 99 to verizon's 199 but ill take anything tbh

You can get an adapter to go up a size, cutter to go down.

So best buy is a no go for the g3?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I believe you can transfer the upgrade to your basic line via best buy with the intent of buying the g3 and have it shipped to the bb store. There they would activate it in store on the basic line. Then you would go home and reactivate basic phone on basic line thus freeing up your new g3 to be used on UDP line.
