[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Methods that will allow you to both get a subsidized phone and keep UDP after 8/24/14

Hmmm. I'm wondering what would be the best phone to get to get the highest profit margin. Have some thinking to do before the 24th. Thanks for your help.

Check swappa and ebay for prices and keep an eye out for best buy sales.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Okay so I have a Nokia Lumia 928. Can I still do the sims card trick??

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

I was surprised they waited this long to close it. Then again as long as we can still pay full price and keep unlimited i am ok with that. That will be next to go, and then I will be gone as well.
Will hold on to unlimited until Verizon forcefully takes it. I'm sure there is a very low number even left with unlmited now so if I were them I would make a offer something equivlant to the 6gb data for the price of $29.99(even a personal call and offer some options). I have unlimited and the $20 talk and tex promo for all 4 lines so there is no way I'm letting that go.

Agree, there can't be that many with unlimited data left. Will be interested to see how their new plans for VoLTE are

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

hello all i have a quick question. Me my wife have UDP on iphone 4s and 1 other line has non, after reading thru all the thread online and here am still very confused on how to keep my UDP. what is the best way to do it ? thanx in advance

Re: Verizon closing the transfer upgrade loophole?

Since transfers are coming to an end it seems then I must act before the 24th to use my last transfer from my UDP line. The line I am using the transfer for also has an upgrade available. Will I lose this upgrade since I am transferring an upgrade to it? I wouldn’t think so but I want to check before I do this. My goal is to get a subsidized phone thru transferring my upgrade. Once this transaction goes thru then use that lines upgrade to get another phone at the subsidized price, then move one of those phones over to the UDP line. Thx!

Re: Verizon to close the upgrade to smartphone then downgrade to basic phone loophole

Wouldn't it just be easier to use the upgrade that is already on the line first and then transfer the other?

I suppose I could do it either way correct? Based on my situation I originally wanted to wait of the note 4. In that case wouldn't it be best to hold onto that lines upgrade then use it when the note 4 comes out?

No, you can't transfer an upgrade to a line that is currently eligible for an upgrade. You must first use the line's upgrade before you can transfer another line's upgrade to it.

And you are incorrect that transfers are coming to an end. What is coming to end is the ability to upgrade a basic phone line to a smartphone and then drop the data plan. So if you want to get a smartphone with your basic line's upgrade, you need to use your basic line's upgrade before 8/25/14 because starting then, if you upgrade a basic line to a smartphone you will have to pay for the data on that line for 2 years.

It is unclear at this time whether you will be able to drop the data plan if you transfer an upgrade to a basic line and use the transferred upgrade to get a smartphone. You can read about the options after 8/24/14 in my thread:

I believe they said about 20 percent of their customers still have unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If you purchase from Verizon you could do that and just do that (activate directly on your UDP line) using the SIM that comes with the phone. Just activated it as a new device never before on your account. You log onto the Verizon website, select change device for your UDP line, it will as for number on SIM and the MEID of the phone.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm afraid I've gotten stuck - when trying to activate the phone it is saying I need to update to tiered data plan and I'm looking for some additional suggestions.
I had the following:
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available) currently has Droid 2 (3G sim card)
Line2 Tiered Data currently has IPHONE5s
I've done the following:
A. transferred line 1 udp update to line 2 tiered phone and ordered new IPHONE5s via verizon website, line one still shows unlimited
B. received phone, didn't turn it on, and went through steps to activate phone onto line 1 UDP.
C. selected "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page."
D. Picked activate it as a new device never before on your account.
E. Entered new phone device ID and sim card numbers
F. was transferred to a new screen saying “The device you are activating is not compatible with your current plans.” And it asks me to pick a tiered data plan
G. I was able to hit cancel and still have udp

I tried first activating new phone on line 2. I did the following:
B. didn't turn it on, and went through steps to activate phone onto line 2 tiered.
C. selected "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page."
D. Picked activate it as a new device never before on your account.
E. Entered new phone device ID but instead of giving me an option to enter a new sim card number, it tells me swap sim cards with current line 2 phone (also an IPHONE5s)
F. I tried turning on the phone without swapping simcards, but of course it cannot make calls/connect to verizon correctly as the original sim card in it is not activated… haven’t tried swapping sim cards

Not sure why just activating it on the UDP line didn’t work? Maybe because currently phone is 3G instead of 4G?
Any ideas on a good next step?
Can I "switch device" between original 1 and line 2 phones without loosing unlimited? And then activate new phone on line 2 and do "switch device" again?
The phones are in different states this week so that adds to the difficult of tying out sim card swaps, but suppose could wait to weekend to try some sim card switches.

Yes, that is why. Verizon has different codes for a 3G UDP and a 4G LTE UDP. So to the system, they appear to be different data plans.

Go ahead and put Line 2's SIM card in the new iPhone and turn it on. That should put the new iPhone on your account. Then put that SIM card back into the old iPhone to put it back on Line 2.

Then when you go to put the new iPhone on Line 1, you should select that you are activating a phone that has already been on your account. That may work. If not, I know somewhere on this thread others encountered that same problem and fixed it somehow.

Going from 3G UDP to 4G LTE UDP and from android to iPhones or vice-versa can sometimes cause problems.
