[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Correct...and ACTIVATE might only mean that you make a phone call on the S5 to anyone (basically to let the cell tower know the device is working).

I did exactly what you plan to do 2 weeks ago.
From the time I powered on my new device (Galaxy Note 3) to completed the log-in process at VZW.com the carrier website was already showing my Note 3 as my device.

1) open new device and remove batt and NEW SIM card (treat as radioactive waste).
2) slip old SIM card into new device.
3) reinstall batt and back cover
4) power on new device and wait for bootup to complete
5) place phone call. If call goes through you are done!!
6) log into VZW.com and look at account details to confirm UDP still in place.

After some issue getting the phone (kept missing the delivery man from UPS!) I got my phone. First thing I did, removed the pre-installed SIM card. Stared at it for a moment, debating the best way to destroy or remove it (any suggestions?) Took my old SIM card that I use with UDP. Slipped that baby in. Put battery in, held my breath, and turned on the device. Went through the prompts to turn the phone on. Did a test call, went through fine. Checked Verizon Wireless. Data plan status: UNLIMITED

BWAHAHAHA! It worked! So far.... I'll be keeping an eye on this for the near future to make sure there's no changes in the data plan, but *knock on wood* it's looking pretty good so far. BTW, I upgraded from a Motorola Droid Razr (the first one, not the Maxx). Got the Samsung Galaxy S5. Thanks again for the help everyone, and shortwave for confirming my plan.

I'll post if something goes wrong and need help (say if I lose my data plan to a mere 2GB).

cut it with scissors thru the gold contacts.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

please clarify for me as I went to the verizon store and even called customer service, and they said that if I transferred my upgrade from a smartphone with unlimited data to a basic phone, I would lose unlimited data?

line 1 - note 2 with unlimited data(upgrade available)
line 2 - note 3 with unlimited data(upgrade avaialble)
line 3 - basic phone(no upgrade)
line 4 - basic phone(no upgrade)

To keep unlimited data on line 1 do I transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 3 online through my verizon? Do I have to order an iphone 5s online or can I go to a store and buy it there? reason I ask if I can buy the 5s in store is because I want to take advantage of the 50% off sale. I can activate it and then if this method works, I would transfer the upgrade from line 2 to line 4 and do it tomorrow. I won't get the 5s until monday so I couldn't get another smartphone for 50% off.

once I get the 5s, activate it on the line 3, then put the basic phone back on line 3? do I have to put the 5s on line 1 or 2 because I plan on selling it?

thanks in advance for the help

Re: Verizon to close the upgrade to smartphone then downgrade to basic phone loophole

So here's my 2 questions:

1) After Ragnarok (8/24/14), if I upgrade a basic line, using its own upgrade, to a smartphone, what happens if I never activate it with the new SIM? I understand that the data plan doesn't go active until you first activate the phone, and I understand that after that date, once you activate it you can't remove the data plan. But if I never activate the phone on that line, I won't technically have completed the upgrade on the basic line, so will the activation lock eventually fall off without adding a data plan? Or do I face any other penalties for doing so?

2) What if I do the same thing through Best Buy, now or after the date? I'm talking about upgrading a basic line to a smartphone through BB.com, destroying the SIM once it arrives, and activating that phone on my line? Again, I'm not completing the upgrade process, so it shouldn't ever add the data plan to that line. However I've always understood you need to first activate the phone on the line you used to get the upgrade, then switch back. Have I been mistaken in this thinking?

I ask because I have one UDP line isn't eligible until next year, but I have 2 basic lines that are eligible for upgrades. If I can use an upgrade on a basic line to get a subsidized smartphone after that date, but never complete the upgrade because I never activated it on that line, will I still end up getting screwed somehow?

Only option I see right now is to burn BOTH upgrades before 8/25, and sell one or both of them. But if there's a way I can save one or both for a phone I truly want, I would MUCH rather do that, given that anything I get now will fall rapidly in the next month or two once all the new hotness hits.

they are either misinformed or liars. If they are in-store verizon reps, the latter is more likely.

To keep unlimited data on line 1 do I transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 3 online through my verizon?
that will work, but the transfer doesn't stick, you have to complete the purchase online.

thanks Jules for the quick response.

I can't complete the purchase of the Iphone 5s at a Verizon store? 5s must be bought online?

if you transfer the upgrade online, the minute you log off, the upgrade goes back to your udp line. It doesn't stick. So no, as I said above, you have to complete the purchase online.

The in-store reps can do the transfer for you and select a 2GB plan on the basic line and activate the new phone on the basic line for you. If you can get them to do it. Tell them not to fvck with your udp. The problem is that they get bonuses for eliminating udp plans so they may do something underhanded. Watch them like a hawk if you are going to let them do that.

Do not tell them you are going to switch the new phone back to your udp line and drop the data plan. Do it yourself when you get home.

Don't ever go to the store

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I hear you but they can do it in the store if they want. Just watch them like a hawk because they can take away your udp, too.

I wouldn't risk doing it in a verizon store, but technically, it is possible.

BTW - I have done it at best buy twice and it was fine. The best buy reps don't get a bonus for kicking you off of your udp, though.

Re: Verizon How to Both Get a Subsidized Phone and Keep Unlimited Data after 8/24/14

Can I transfer upgrade from basic line to udp line first, and then use BB method to get a new phone and keep udp line? Thanks.

before 8/25/14 there is no need to do the transfer. After 8/24/14, we are not sure which line will be stuck with the 2yr data plan commitment - will it be the donor line or the donee line? We don't know.

Are you referring to possibility that the donor line (UDP) would be required to change to the new extension and therefor the $30 2gb plan or are you just referring to which line would be required to get the contract extension. If the latter, wouldn't it make sense that it would be the basic line/tiered line?

NOW granted the memo isn't talking about transfers but only using a basic line to upgrade itself and requiring a data plan.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

OK, so to confirm; I will have to activate a sim card on a 4G phone prior to completing the BB method and I cannot simply order a a new sim for my new phone which would be the S5 and then activate?

correct first you need to have a 4G SIM in use prior to ordering the new phone from BB

Glad I could help...just passing on what I recently learned here.

I took a short strip of scotch tape and placed the new SIM toward one end. Then folded over the tape to make a small sealed pouch.
This way it won't fit in any device. And to remove the tape will destroy that SIM

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just wanted to chime in!
My S3 has been off contract since July, was waiting but with all the drama going on with Verizon I decided to take the plunge.
Ordered an S5 through Best Buy mobile on Tuesday, Phone came in today. Turned my old S3 off, pulled the sim, slapped it into the new S5, booted it up and it was activated. Contract extended until 2016, still on unlimited data. :)

The leaked memo only shows the situation where the basic line's own upgrade is used to upgrade the basic line. In that case, both the contract extension and data plan commitment are on the same line, which is the basic line.

I am guessing that Verizon hasn't changed the way it works when you transfer an upgrade in that the donor line will still be the line with the contract extension. If so, the only thing that makes sense is that the donor line will get both the contract extension and the data plan commitment. However, whether or not verizon has reconfigured their system to force you to change the data plan on the donor line to at least a $30 per month plan, I hadn't thought about until it was brought up in my other thread.

Thoughts on Possible Way to Avoid 2yr Data Plan Requirement if You have 2 Basic Lines

Of course if that is how it is going to work, then the transfer upgrade method will no longer be a viable option to keep your UDP.

NOW granted the memo isn't talking about transfers but only using a basic line to upgrade itself and requiring a data plan.
we can only hope that verizon hasn't changed their system to affect the transfer upgrade process.

Re: 4 UDPs on Family Plan in different parts of the country

Has anyone been able to confirm if this works with Amazon or not. Stupid Verizon seems to have put a stop on shipping the newer phones from BB(G3)!
on slick deals they have, but you have to select a new data plan and your customer agreement shows it. However, the plan does not change. There also is the possibility of the amazon $400 secondary etf but no one has been charged that yet.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

that will work fine now, you will keep UDP. However, no one knows if that will work starting on the 25th of august.

you will be left with a pending activation on line 2 that should fall off eventually, but sometimes it doesn't and you have to call and have tier 2 techs remove it.

yes, just remove the sim card before you sell it.

it should, if not block data on the line. But again i am talking about before 8/25/14.

Is it possible for me to remove the data plan from the dumbphone line without me activating the G3 on another line? I guess that would mean that the first person to activate the phone would be the one buying it on eBay. Would that be a problem? I'd like to not have to open the box and activate the G3 if possible (other than to remove the pre-installed SIM).

Thanks again!
