[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Can it be a sim from a non-iphone?
Yes it can be a SIM from a non-iPhone.

The thing to know is the new iPhones use a nano-SIM while many other 4G phones are using micro-SIM.

A micro-SIM is larger than the nano-SIM. So you might need to cut a micro-SIM to make it fit into the nano-SIM slot of a new iPhone.
SIM cutters and adapters (in case you have to go the other direction -use a nano-SIM in a micro-SIM slot) are available at Amazon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So then see. If a person has a tiered line they can continue to alternate upgrade. As long as you follow the right steps.

I am happy that there is more evidence of this working.

So then you basically just order online from verizon in order to take advantage of this...

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I borrowed a friend's old 4G verizon phone. Went to a VZW where they gave me a SIM and swapped my service from my iPhone to the old 4G phone. Next day I placed order for my Note3 at BestBuy.com

After it arrived I put my week old SIM into my new Note3.
Easy peasy

Awesome! Glad it work out for you!
I guess I just can't get my head around why I couldn't do the same thing with a new iphone 6. It seems like I could go to a Verizon store, ask for a new nano sim for this phone a friend gave me (I know, some friend!) and swap service to it avoiding the extra expense of purchasing an intermediary dummy phone. (I have planned all along on purchasing the new iphone at full retail)

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Correct. I acknowledge that if you choose to order from Best Buy, then you need to have already established a history with a 4G phone.
But at the moment, I do not plan on purchasing a subsidized phone and renewing my contract (I realize that opens up the throttling issue, but that's another discussion). So... maybe I am "making up my own method", but I was looking for someone to give me a reason why I needed to have the extra step/phone to keep the UDP. Why would swapping service to a non-iphone with 4G before ultimately switching it to a 4G iphone 6 be necessary?

if I get the phone from apple.com and activate it after swapping the sim card, will I still be able to keep my unlimited data plan?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

well, was kinda looking for someone that has done it

Find a friend with an old 4G iphone laying around if that makes you more comfortable. The crucial step in the proven BB method is to get an active SIM working on your UDP line before you purchase a new device.

The reason that this step is required is because- purchasing a device with a subsidized price ordinarily ENDS EXISTING UDP PLANS.

I'd suggest asking non-VZW people why this, why that, why the other ...is mostly a waste of time as we are not policy makers at VZW and there is a large amount of speculation on our part about why VZW is doing something.

Good luck

Are you talking about just paying full retail for the phone? If you do that, no "trickery" is required; you can just go into a VZW store and buy the phone.

Yup.
Thanks!
It does SEEM like that would work to me. Buy the phone at retail. Go online to swap devices on UDP line. Exhale.
But I also understand the logic of "no one has done it" so, "there is a large amount of speculation on our part" as to how it will turn out.

Lots of people have bought at full retail without any impact to their UDP. If that's what you want to do it will work fine.

Re: UDP help Please - I'm confused.

Note to everyone. I did call Amazon and they said it would be no problem switching the phone from one line to another within the same family plan.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

That's good to know. Thanks!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Here's my situation (I've read through some of the forum but not most so hopefully I don't get rude messages)
2 Lines UDP (mine) - HTC One M7 (Both no contract, both have upgrades available, i bought my M7 full retail price so I have no contract..didn't know about any of these cool methods!)
1 Line TDP (wife) - iPhone 5 (Contract just ended, upgrade available)
1 Line, cheapy flip phone no data line

I plan on upgrading my HTC One M7 and my wife's iPhone 5 to the new iPhone 6/6 Plus but would like specific advice in my particular situation because it is slightly different from the ones in the forum. I have no question on upgrading my wife's phone because she has TDP so she would be getting a subsidized price. My main goal is to extend a 2 year contract on my personal UDP line and pay a subsidized price for the new iPhone.

Here are some questions
1.) Can I transfer an upgrade to my wife's TDP line to buy another phone even though she's using an upgrade already? Will they allow that since she's already going to sign up to buy another iPhone on contract?
2.) From what I'm hearing, if I am somehow able to buy a subsidized price I will have the phone shipped to me. I'll have to cut my microsim to a nano sim by one of those sim kits because I'm going from an HTC One M7 to an iPhone 6/6 Plus. I will NOT power the iPhone 6/6 Plus when I receive it but put the cut SIM into the slot and hope that I maintain my UDP.
3.) For kicks, later on...after my phone is using the cut SIM, can't I request from a flagship store a new SIM card?
- Also, lets say I do ask a manager to give me a new SIM card and I say I want a nano sim but they see I have an HTC One M7 on the UDP line and won't issue me one? Won't it look fishy?
4.) Which method is best for me? Verizon online? BB? Costco? What's the safest and less likely to have issues?
- From what I am reading I hear there might be issues with the Costco one and the safest bets are BB and Verizon online? Maybe amazon?
5.) On Scyzek post #1994 he talks about activate or switching device, if my wife already activated her iPhone 6 on her line using her own upgrade, how do I make a switch without switching data plans (don't want to mess anything up)

FYI, I think my situation is slightly different from chau_mp (post #2002) and from Scyzek (post #1994) (because I believe he/she only did one phone upgrade)

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Verizon had told us that the buy at full retail plan will work as well.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It is unique: Scyzek is only upgrading ONE phone, he's transferred his upgrade to the TDP line. If my wife is already using her TDP upgrade to purchase an iPhone on her phone line, can I transfer my UDP upgrade to her TDP line even though she has used hers?

I'm assuming she would have to FIRST use her upgrade to purchase her iPhone 6 and THEN i would transfer my upgrade to her line? Is transferring upgrade only done through the verizon website?

Your wife will need to upgrade first; however, I would recommend you do the following:

1.) Use your wife's upgrade to order your phone first.
2.) Activate this phone on your wife's plan. This puts your phone on a tiered data plan and uses up her upgrade.
3.) Reactive your wife's old phone on her plan. This will free up your phone to be added your line.
4.) Active the new phone on your plan. Now the phone you want is on the UDP.
4.) Transfer your upgrade to your wife.
5.) Upgrade your wife's phone as normal giving her the phone she wants.

All of this can be done through Verizon's website. It is pretty easy and shouldn't take a lot of time.

If I am going to try the Scyzek method and upgrading from a Galaxy S III with a UDP sim card to an iPhone 6, how hard would it be to cut the micro sim down to a nano sim?
