[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Will this work? Specifically, will activating a 4G NFC SIM in an iPhone 4S work?

OK, so I just figured out putting the 4G NFC SIM in the iPhone 4S won't work. Clearly, I need to have an active SIM on my UDP line that will work in the iPhone 6 on Line 2 first. I cannot find anything in this thread that specifically shows you how to move from a 3G plan to a 4G plan and SIM without losing UDP.

Any creative suggestions?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Quick question, has anyone been able to downgrade their extra line which they upgraded to a TDP in order to order a new phone on back to a basic line after performing this method? I have 2 UDP lines and 2 basic lines. I transferred my wifes upgrade to one of the basic lines and added a 4G Galaxy Nexus to that line then preordered the iPhone 6 Plus on it. Once it arrived yesterday I simply pulled my nano sim from my line and popped it into the new phone and it retained my UDP but now I'm stuck with a $30 data plan on my basic line.. Any ideas on getting rid of it? I contemplated heading into Verizon and talking to one of the cooler reps I met and seeing if he could switch the 2GB TDP to my wifes unlimited line and make it their 6GB TDP they were offering me previously which returning the phone or any of that jazz. Ideas?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've been following this thread fairly closely the last few weeks, and am glad the results are starting to come in. I'm hoping to get an iPhone 6 in the near future.

But I've gotten so lost in the trees that maybe I'm not seeing the forest. I could use some clear vision and advice. (Sorry in advance for the length of this post). I currently have:
Line 1: iphone 4, UDP, no SIM, upgrade available; Line 2: dumbphone, no data plan, no upgrade available

It seems as though it MIGHT be possible to keep my UDP, using BB or some other kind of method (which would also involve me getting a used 4G phone, so I can have a phone with an activated SIM before ordering). But other factors have occurred to me.

Unlike some of you, I am not a power user on my iPhone. I checked and my data usage on my UDP line has consistently been about 1 (one) GB/month. I am not a gamer, nor do I do much streaming on my iPhone. I use more "data" on my iPad 2, though it is WIFI only.
I never even knew about tethering until the last week or so. It sounds intriguing, though I have concerns about iPhone battery drain and general inconvenience. Plus my sense is that with a UDP I'd have to pay Verizon extra each month ($20? $30?) to use tethering. I think I'd be using about 2-4GB/month where WIFI wasn't available if I had the convenience.

My iPad 2 is aging, obviously, and I am considering getting an iPad Air 2 when it comes out in October or November. I'm not sure whether to get WIFI only or WIFI + cellular.

So my questions are:

1) Should I even be worrying so much about keeping UDP, given that my iPhone usage is less than 1GB?
2) What's the least expensive though not crazy-making way I can tether my current iPad 2 until the iPad Air 2 comes out?
3) Should I just buy the iphone 6 the subsidized, non-loophole way, and switch to the More Everything plan?
4) If I get the iPad Air 2, is it worth the extra $$ to get WIFI +cellular or is there a good enough, cheaper way to be able to use a WIFI-only model via tethering?

I realize some of these questions may be beyond the scope of this thread, but the answers to them determine if I go ahead and try and maneuver to hold on to my UDP line. Thanks for any help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 2 udp lines 1 has upgrade available now. If I do the bestbuy option on the one line wont verizon find out even after swapping sims cards when upgrade fee shows up on monthly bill statement and charges upgrade fee of 30$? Wont they see I upgrade on an udp line?

Did you actually put it (activate it) on the basic line at all? The only chance is if you put your SIM from your UDP in the new phone without first activating it on the basic line. Then the pending $30 plan would never be implemented and will fall off in a week. This is theoretical though since nobody has confirmed it after 8/24 yet.

I have 2 udp lines on my account line 1 has a upgrade available now. If I do the bestbuy method and upgrade wont verizon eventually find out on the next billing statement when a upgrade fee is charged to the account and 2yr contract extended?

Borrow or buy an old 4G phone and get a free 4G SIM FROM VZW. Use it for about a week then use the Bestbuy method to order your new phone.

I borrowed a relative's old unused 4G phone and walked into a VZW store. They activated the SIM and I was able to move from an iPhone4 to a Note3 after using a LG Lucid for about a week.

What you want is exactly what Verizon blocked a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think there's a way to remove it if Verizon did indeed close that loophole. When you buy the phone and activate it with the subsidized price, Verizon says it requires a data package minimum of $30 for the length of the minimum contract term. Since you purchased it on a line that has a data plan, it requires a data package on that line for the next 2 years. It would be cheaper if you bought the phone unsubsidized price instead of upgrading a dumb phone line.

You can always try to get that 6GB data package for $30 a month...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

5 lines, 2 UL, 3 feature phones only 2 feature phones in contract

8/23 upgraded feature line to lg g3 without transfer from bb.com with pick up in store.

Phone was $99 at time of purchase, and I used a old $50 bb gc so only charged $58 on cc.

Picked up phone on 8/28. Never powered on device. Was given another $50 bb gc from Feb promo (have 4 left, one on each line).

Since best buy doesn't activate upon ordering it messed up my contract date. Tier 2 adjusted date to 8/23 to remove mandatory data. Verizon cs had to manually reactivate feature phone.

2 days later I finally went online to vzw. Under device history it did list the g3. Never removed sim. Used g3 on line with unlimited.

Began receiving warning letters from bb that my order was about to be cancelled. Disregarded. Price dropped to $49. Was issued a $50 refund as part of 14 day price guarantee.

Days later received email that order was never picked up. And all was being refunded. So I checked my balances and sure enough even the first best buy gc was reloaded to 50. And the new one from picking up phone was still valid.

So excluding my upgrade fee, I got the phone for free and another bb gc.

So my issue here is trying to maximize savings. I want to take advantage of the note 4 pre-order. I will wait until Oct 1. Burn thru 5gbs data and see how bad optimization is.

If it's bad we'll take two smartphones to cricket.

If it's not bad, I want to trade in my $10 moto Admiral and get the $190 samsung bonus plus my best buy $50gc bonus.

I am concerned if I do pre-order I will be required to add tiered data and want to avoid this for at least another year.

Do you think the act of pre-ordering will cause any issues? Do you think swapping the sims will cause some issue in obtaining the trade in bonus?

I see on their website that you have to select in store pick up to be eligible for the trade in bonus. From everything I've been reading in-store pickups have to be activated by the employees with SIM they're shipped with.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So when I order the note 4 all I have to do is click on existing plan and I should be fine when ordering from Best Buy? All i have to do is pop in my old sim card in there and take out the new one before turning on my phone and my unlimited Data should be there.

Correct. It is that simple.
Don't forget to take screenshots of the process these would be used if something goes wrong and you have to reclaim the UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

has anyone noticed that it doesn't have an option to click on "existing plan"? anyone try it recently...i just went through a few steps...

1. Although you don't need to worry as much, you can always switch over to their 6GB plan for $30 when you do a subsidized upgrade. Keep in mind that as time goes on, people consume more data. That's why these networks started implementing limits. I now consume more than 10gb per month, but only consumed 2gb a couple years ago. Once you start streaming videos, your data usage goes up dramatically.
2. You will have to go through the carrier to tether your iPad. I don't remember the actual cost, but there is an extra fee per month for tethering. Keep in mind that there may be some apps out there that can hack through for free, but I don't know of any at this moment.
3. For me, if I switch over the More Everything Plan, I would need to pay an extra $100 a month just for the service to match my current needs. That data becomes significantly expensive.
4. Answered in number 2. You have to go online and try adding the new plan into the cart and don't check out yet and see if your monthly bill is lower.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Any answer to my question on verizon noticing on next month statement of upgrade fee and 2yr contract extended? Won't they catch the bb method right there and than?

If they happened to be looking for it and cared and saw it, yes they would notice. I'm not sure they'd do anything even in those circumstances. You're not doing something they don't know about and you're not doing anything that isn't permitted under current conditions. It might not be their ideal scenario, but if they did "catch" it and they did downgrade the account, you still have a period where you can undo any contracted account changes.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok thanks guess they haven't from what ive been reading people have done this for a while. Wonder if being under a new contract will prevent throttling which I think is a bigger thing than just the new phone itself

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Okay I'm the new brave person everybody has been waiting to see put their money and plan on the line. Here's what I just did.

I have 3 phones on my family plan. 1 is UDP, 1 is 2gb tier, 1 is a feature phone (ignore this entirely right now)
I transferred the upgrade from my UDP line to the 2gb tier line on verizonwireless.com
I bought a LG G3 from verizonwireless.com on the 2gb tier line on 8/29/2014.
I took the SIM card from my UDP line and put it in the LG G3 (same size thankfully)
Turned on the LG G3 with UDP SIM. Phone recognized the SIM and activated the device on its own with my UDP phone #.
I went to verizonwireless.com to my account. Account shows LG G3 activated on my UDP line and still shows UNLIMITED DATA
Contract on the UDP line has been extended by 2 years.

Not gonna lie I was nervous as all hell from reading this flamefest about what works and this and that and speculation running wild. Took a chance and it worked. I trusted the SIM card to do the magic people were already vouching for. Althought I was considering returning this to try BB method but I wanted to stay strong. I can provide more proof if the vast majority of you don't believe it otherwise here's my device with UDP intact as of tonight.

Scyzek,
Does this work if you are transferring upgrade from UDL to 2GB line, and keeping iPhone 6 on the 2GB LINE?
Here's my current situation:
Line1 - iPhone 5s, Unlimited data plan, upgrade available, SIM CARD.
Line2 - iPhone 4s, 2GB line, no upgrade available, NO SIM CARD.

Line2 wants iPhone 6. If I transfer upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 and upgrade Line2, and then activate Line2 with the sim card that comes with the phone, will Line 1 lose unlimited data???
I don't want the newly ordered iPhone 6 on the unlimited data plan line. I just want to transfer the upgrade without losing unlimited data on line 1, and allow Line 2 to have the iPhone 6 with 2GB data.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The antenna is in the battery and the sim must support NFC. I tried to use S-beam and it would just time out repeatedly. Thats when Idid the research and learned that you also need an NFC compatible sim card. I got the new sim and everything works as it should.

And yes, you are correct. Isis and other apps like that are why Verizon tied NFC capability into the Sim card. But you need the sim card for more than just Isis wallet (which I have never used).

I'm in the same boat as well. I cut my micro sim to a nano sim (the phone works but for some reason some features just won't work like imessage etc) so I'm thinking about getting a new legit nano sim from a verizon store. I already inserted my old UDP sim card to the iphone 6. Would it affect my UDP if I got to a verizon store to just get a new sim card? BTW anyone have a "verify your order/device" when you're on the activate or switch device page? If so, do I verify it on the UDP line or the TDP line? I did the transfer upgrade from UDP line to TDP and bought it with the TDP and just activated it using the UDP sim card.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Tripling my post count today. Tried mr toad's method of suspending/resuming the 2gb line but I still get this screen below. Didn't seem to do anything. However, I can skip past it to the screen you just quoted at the bottom. And yes, the UDP line has been extended by 2 years. Am I answering that one right?
