[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It looks like I will be forced to pay full price for the Note 4 as I only have one line with unlimited data (Verizon) and I'd like to keep it. Before I do so, are there any known discounts off the Note 4 for people in my situation? Thanks everyone for this valuable resource!

Do you have to have the phone right now? Wait a couple weeks to a month and BB should be shipping it by then. Or pay an extra $400 to have it now.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi tx_tuff. No, I can wait a few weeks no problem - especially for $400. But how is waiting until BB ships going to save me $400? Are you talking about the switching the SIM card trick? Thanks very much for your help!

Yes, the BB method. Order phone for home delivery. When you get the phone take out new SIM before you ever turn the phone on. Put in old SIM and crank it up, you will be good to go! I think they may already be shipping one if the two colors. Don't remember which one.

Looks like I'll be waiting as well. They need to hurry. I'm impatient enough already lol

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can someone confirm if this would work....
I have a 5 line family plan. 3 smartphones and 2 dumbphones. 2 of the smartphones are UDP and one is 2GB. I have an upgrade available on a dumbphone line. I would like to move that upgrade from the dumbphone line to the 2GB tier smartphone line and get a new smartphone. Once the new smartphone is activated on the 2GB line, could I then swap the sim from the new phone and give my existing phone to the 2GB line and then put my UDP sim in the new phone without changing my UDP? I was hoping this could work as the upgrade is not from my UDP line which would cause me to lose my unlimited as I have read on the net. So would this scenario allow me to preserve my UDP? Thanks for any hellp!

You can't get a smartphone on a dumb line unless you switch the dumb line to a tiered data plan which in turn you will be stuck with for two years. If you have no upgrade avail. on either of the UDP lines then there isn't much you can do.

He is not getting a phone on the dumbphone line, he is transferring it to a 2GB line.

Transfer the upgrade from the dumbphone to the 2GB line and get the phone you want. When you get the phone activate it on the 2GB line. One you have done that go online and put the old phone back in the 2GB line. This will free up the new phone. Then put the new phone on the UDP. This will keep UDP and give you a new phone while also taking the old UDP phone off. You can then also online put the old UDP phone on the 2GB line.

Seems like a lot of work but that gives you everything you need.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Any reason the order Note4 keep old SIM would NOT work with phones from Amazon?
Amazon was out of phones few days ago, but I'm looking at it now and they show them in stock.
Amazon, if it works would be cheaper as there be no tax, and with my Prime account, I could have it here on Tue for free or Mon for $4.

I have Note2 now, so I'm eligible for upgrade but I don't want to chance loosing the unlimited data.

On a separate note, I also have 2nd line with dummy STD phone, but I read and was told that upgrading to 2nd, dummy line and then switching phones and downgrading the 2nd line back to STD was not an option anymore, right? That was the loophole they patched in Aug.?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have been following this thread for months and read through hundreds of posts. It has been a wealth of information and now I am finally going to take the plunge myself. I will be transferring my upgrade from my udp to my 2gb tdp and ordering phone on my tdp. For a while it was recommended on here that when the phone arrives, treat the included sim as nuclear waste and destroy immediately. Use the sim from your udp phone to activate new phone. This would just leave you with a pending activation on other line that will eventually fall off. Lately it seems people are first activating the phone on the tdp with included sim, waiting a little whike and then re activating original tdp phone on line and activating new phone on udp. This seems to leave udp intact and you do not have the pending activation issue. My 2 questions are:
1. Is either method recommended over the other?
2. The second method talked about switching phones online with Verizon but can new phone be activated with existing tdp sim, then deactivated by placing tdp sim back in original phone and then just pop in existing udp sim?

One of my colleagues did that with a different device. He has a single line with UDP. He ordered an LG G3 from Amazon. When it arrived, he put in his current SIM card before booting the device. It worked fine for him.

If it BB method works on Amazon, It is tempting to try it, but i really do not want to risk using UDP. IF amazon method works, You will probably able to get $200 rebate from Samsung as well

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 4 lines,1 unlimited data and 3 basic lines. One of my basic lines had a upgrade available. Walled into the Verizon store last Thursday and told the rep that I wanted to upgrade to the note 4 on the basic line that had the upgrade, but I did not want to activate right now because it was a present. (for me lol) 5 minutes later walked out with the phone, got home and took the sim out of Note 3 on unlimited data put in the Note 4 and threw away the sim it came with. I still have my unlimited data and as of yet no data charge on the basic line.

Why don't you do the Best Buy Method it seriously still works on the note 4?

James, didn't they upgrade that line to a data line?
Are you saying that the upgrade to TDP does not happen until the phone is turned on?

If you're asking me; I wanted to know if Amazon or really any 3rd party would work because:
A. BB was out of them on Thursday
B. BB takes longer to ship unless I pay expedited shipping
and
C. BB charges sales tax whereas Amazon does not; at least not in New Mexico

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

One thing with Amazon is that they can charge an additional fee if you change which line a device you buy from them is on within the first six months. They do this because they lose credit for the upgrade when the device is deactivated from that line within that time frame. If there is a possibility of you swapping or replacing, Amazon isn't recommended.

As of today it still shows as a basic line on my account. So I'm guessing if you don't activate on that line they won't add the data to it.
