[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, everyone. I asked this question elsewhere, but got conflicting answers. Here's my situation: I have an iPhone 4 (no removable SIM card) and I'm looking to upgrade to the iPhone 6. I'm out-of-contract and have unlimited data. How can I get the iPhone 6 for $200 and keep my UDP? I think my confusion lies in the SIM card. Do I have to use someone's 4G phone with a removable SIM before I can do this, or can I just ask Verizon for a card? A detailed, explain-it-like-I'm-an-***** response would be much appreciated.

Do you have any other lines or is it just a single 3G UDP? This will make a big difference.

Thanks for responding. My brother (iPhone 5S, UDP) and my dad (basic flip phone) are on my family plan. Both my brother and I are due for upgrades.

You would need to activate a 4GLTE smartphone on the line. If you have another line with a 4GLTE smartphone then you can switch it to the UDP line. Or you can borrow or buy a cheap 4GLTE smartphone. No way around the 4GLTE smartphone requirement , unless you want to pay full retail.

Keep in mind that if it is a different sim size then you would need to cut or use an adapter.

Thanks for your response. My brother has an iPhone 5S and is also eligible for an upgrade. Would I just call Verizon and ask them to switch our phones? How long would I need to have it on my line before purchasing/activating the iPhone 6?

You would need to transfer to a tiered data line that is not eligible for an upgrade online. You can order the phone immediately after transferring the upgrade.

Please read the unlimited data sticky for more details.

1) Through Verizon online, order the new smartphone UDP Line 2 wants using UDP Line 1's upgrade on UDP Line 1, picking the 2GB data plan for UDP Line 1 and have it shipped to home not shipped to store;
2) After the first order is submitted, through Verizon online, order the new smartphone UDP Line 1 wants using UDP Line 2's upgrade on UDP Line 2, picking the 2GB data plan for UDP Line 2 and have it shipped to home not shipped to store;
3) When the new smartphones arrive, do not turn them on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device;
4) Select Line 2 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";*
5) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the phone ordered for Line 2 (using Line 1's upgrade in Step 1) and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the phone and follow the directions to activate Line 2's new phone on Line 2;
6) Then click activate or switch a device, select Line 1 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";*
7) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the phone ordered for Line 1 (using Line 2's upgrade in Step 2) and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the phone and follow the directions to activate Line 1's new phone on Line 1.

Note, you would not click "Next" rather you would click the blue link in the sentence "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page."

In the past people got a screen where they would choose, "No, I am activating a different device" rather than choosing to activate the new device that had just shipped.

If both lines will have the same new phone, it is absolutely crucial that you keep the phones straight and do not activate them on the lines they were ordered on.

The above method was proven to work December 25, 2014 at Slickdeals.net - View Single Post - Upgrade and keep your Unlimited Data with Verizon for phones coming from 3G to 4G LTE.

Just make sure to not screw up the phones. I'd recommend getting different color iPhones. If you want the same color be extra careful or order them separately.

I've got another method that would work too if you prefer something different.

Need some advice, I'm part way through the BestBuy/UDVZWIP4 Method to upgrade my only line which is UDP from a Droid DNA to Droid Turbo. First I went to a VAR and picked up a nano sim since old phone is micro. Then I ordered the Turbo and when it came I tossed the SIM that came with it and went to verizons site to activate phone and sim when i put in the new SIM card number in the "I have an existing simcard" I get a message saying device isnt compatible with current plan, please choose a new plan. What is my next course of action, anything besides cutting sim from my DNA? I thought my DNA was a 4g phone not 3G

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My apology for posting this twice....

Hello folks, this is my first post and I am not sure if this will land on the correct thread/forum. I browsed thru some of the posts but did not have time to go thru all the thread. Here is my situation.

Line 1 : Droid Razr Maxx UDP - month-by-month - my phone
Line 2 : 2GB Data - Iphone 5s - month-by-month - daughter's phone, she is away in College
Line 3 : 2GB Data - Iphone 5- upgrade Not available until 6/2015 - spouse's phone

Do no want to loose Line1 UDP and will use Line 2 to get a Droid Turbo
but since the Line 2 iPhone 5s is not with me I will transfer upgrade from Line 2 to Line 3

Here is my plan
1 . Transfer Line 2 upgrade to Line 3
2. Upgrade Line 3 with Droid Turbo thru Verizon online and have it shipped to home
3. Once new phone is shipped activate Droid Turbo on Line 3 and use phone ie send text, make phone calls etc. to make sure new phone is working
4. Switch Line 3 back to Iphone5
5. Switch Line 1 to Droid Turbo and hopefully keep my UDP.

Thanks a million to all who have shared here You guys are great!

You need to cut your old SIM to activate the new Turbo on your line.

Your plan will work fine if you want to use the upgrade on line 2. You could also just transfer your upgrade to line 3 and do the same thing.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Oh I see, transferring the UDP Line1 upgrade to Line3 is a better option then. Thanks for pointing that out,Dusoccer10.

Now, I have some concerns about the activation process for the UDP line.

When I activate the UDP Line1 with new phone, I read on the vzw website it will ask me to identify the device by selecting if it has
or has not been previously used with this account?

Which option should I choose? I am leery about the options and not sure how to proceed because it talks about Device ID and SIM Card etc. Please advise.

Here is the transcript from the steps on how to activate i got from VZW:

"Now let’s go through how to “Activate a Device.”
Identify your new device by selecting if it has or has not been previously used with this account.
If you choose a device that has been previously used, select it from your device history, check to make sure the listed
Device ID matches the device you are activating and click “Next”. If for some reason the device you previously used is not appearing in your device history then select the option “I am activating a device that I have not used with this account”.
Next, you’ll need to enter the Device ID. You can click the links on the page to see instructions on how to find the Device ID for the type that you’re activating. Once located, enter the ID and click Next. A little hint as you’re entering the device ID, is to always remember to use the number “0.” If you have a 4G device, you’ll be asked if you have a SIM card. If you select “I Have an Existing SIM card.” You’ll notice the page expands to allow you to enter the SIM ID If you don’t have a SIM card…select “Send me a new SIM card.”, and one will be sent to you

Thank you very much for your reply. I should've mentioned that my brother doesn't actually want to upgrade his phone at this time. How does your method change if I'm the only one who wants to upgrade?

Don't order the second device. You will just use your brother's upgrade by doing the following:

4) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new phone ordered and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new phone and follow the directions to activate the new phone on your line.

Basically, once you have finished step 2, just follow the picture sequence at Slickdeals.net - View Single Post - Upgrade and keep your Unlimited Data with Verizon and you'll be all set.

Dusoccer10, i went ahead and transfered UDP/Line1 upgrade to Line3 and am about to order the Turbo for Line3. Thanks for pointing that out.

My next question is when the Turbo is shipped and I activate on Line3 should I select
'No it has not been previously used with this account' then proceed with the activation, test the Turbo on Line3/TDP etc..?

Then when I switch the Turbo to Line1/UDP should I still select
'No it has not been previously used with this account'? and Enter Device ID etc...

or select ' It has been previously used with this account'? Will I see the Turbo on the history list?

I just want to make sure I won't mess it up during the switching process and loose my UDP.

Also, the SIM card switch scenario will not work for me since my current UDP phone is Droid Razr MAxx and I dont want to go thru the SIM card cutting process afraid I ruin the SIM.

Again thanks a million for your recommendations!

You don't need to worry about SIM Swapping between the Razr Maxx and the Turbo. Just do the following (can be done in either Best Buy or Verizon):

1.) Move upgrade from line 1 to line 3
2.) Purchase the turbo and have it shipped home
3.) When the smartphone arrives just activate it on Line 3 following the directions that came with the phone using the new SIM card as well. Make sure to shut down the iPhone first and keep the old SIM.
4.) Wait about an hour and make sure that the phone works (test call, texts, and data).

Now you just need to reactivate the iPhone on line 3 to free up the Turbo. Do the following:

5.) Shut down the Turbo
6.) Log into Verizon online and select "activate or switch devices"
7.) Select line 3 (should have a picture of the Turbo)
8.) Select "activating device that I previously used". In the list should be the iPhone 5. Select the iPhone 5 and follow directions.

Now you just need to get the Turbo on your line:

9.) Shut down the Maxx
10.) Log into Verizon online and select "activate or switch devices"
11.) Select line 1
12.) Select "activating device that I previously used". In the list should be the Turbo. Select the Turbo and follow directions.

Finally, enjoy your new phone!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here's my scenario...

Line 1: UDP - iPhone 5 - month-to-month (no contract) - eligible for upgrade
Line 2: UDP - iPhone 5 - month-to-month (no contract) - eligible for upgrade

I want to do the Best Buy method, and I am looking to get the Galaxy S5 for lines 1 & possibly 2 later. Through this resourceful thread I found out I can use a sim adapter for the switch. I was just about ready to purchase my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone through Best Buy for $49.99, but was stalled and did not complete the purchase. Went to resume the next day and the price jumped to $149.99! I've been keeping and eye on the prices, and it still remains at $149.99. I saw that on Amazon the price is $79.99. I am thinking of doing the "Best Buy method" through Amazon, but first I want to ask if there are any increased risked if I purchase through Amazon versus Best Buy. Any feedback is appreciate!!

Thanks.

The Best Buy method does work on Amazon; though, people tend to shy away because it is possible to get hit with a $400 charge if you violate their terms of service (there are rumors of this over on SlickDeal). In your scenario, it is safer to order from either Best Buy or Verizon. If you didn't want to use a SIM adapter, just follow the directions in post 8056.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, I went through the process on Amazon "AS-IF" I was going to purchase the device, and I am just wondering where it states in their terms of service? I skimmed through it and couldn't locate anything. Also, when "Selecting A Plan," it has an option to keep existing plan, but only list Shared Voice and Messaging plan, nothing about my data.

Any feedback on this?

Don't order the second device. You will just use your brother's upgrade by doing the following:

3) Select your line - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";* and
4) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new phone ordered and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new phone and follow the directions to activate the new phone on your line.

You're awesome, man. Thank you so much. One last question: the SIM card shipped with the new phone--that's just the one that'll come with (or in) the iPhone, right? Just making sure I don't have to request an additional SIM card or something.
