[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Regarding keeping unlimited data on my family business account:

We have 1 line that still has unlimited data, but we are going to get rid of this line because my brother who uses it is now moving out of the country.

I want to preserve this line and use it for myself, but I do not want to use his phone number. Is it possible for me to switch to his line and keep my current number? Or, I guess, change numbers to something new entirely? I would obviously prefer keeping my number on my current (non unlimited) line when I switch over to his unlimited one.

If I were in your position, I would port the number you want to keep over to Google Voice temporarily.

Then Port it back into Verizon on your brother's old unlimited line.

Of course, this will trigger an Early Termination fee on your current line, if it is still under contract.

Since you have a business account, I would recommend a phone call to Verizon's business reps. They tend to be much better than than the regular consumer reps and have the ability to do more things. It may be possible for them to switch the plans around, and in this case, a phone call will not hurt. Sometimes, it is as simple as requesting a new number for your line. This would then free up your old number to be switched onto the unlimited line (phone companies are required to keep your old number for 30 days attached to your account in case you change your mind).

If they cannot help, then your only option will be to port out and then port in your number to the unlimited line. If you are still in contract, it may still be possible to port out of Verizon and not be charged an ETF. Just follow the directions at this thread: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/779321 (posts 3 and 4). To my knowledge, this still works.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 2 smartphone lines with UDP (G3 and S5) and 2 basic phones, 1 line on UDP is available for upgrade and another basic line will be on the 16th. We want to upgrade one this month to note edge and possibly wait for the GS6. What would be the best way to keep my same setup and not have to pay the $30 data plan if i upgrade a basic phone to a smartphone.

The good news is that this is fairly easy to do. For the current unlimited line that has an upgrade available, just do the Best Buy method as the Note Edge, G3, and S5 all use micro-SIMs. For the basic line, when its upgrade becomes available, just do the following:

1.) Order the smartphone you want from Best Buy and "upgrade" the line to the 2GB plan.
2.) Make sure you ship the phone to home
3.) When the phone arrives, use a current active SIM in one of the other smartphones.

That's all you need to do. You won't get charged the $30 data plan by using a current active SIM. The plan change only occurs if you activate the new smartphone with the SIM that is already installed.

I'm considering both this and what dusoccer10 said beneath.

If I port the number to Google voice do I lose it as my current number on the phone? Sorry, I have never used Google voice before.

I think it would be easier to request a new number, change to the other phone line and then switch that number to my old one.

If your line is out of contract, it would be easier to just cancel it, get a newphone number for your brother's unlimited line, and transfer your device to it.

Dusoccer brings up a good suggestion though. Call the business dept and see if they can do anything.

If you port your original number to Google Voice, it'll disconnect your line and you will lose the ability to make and receive calls. However, you can then port it back in to Verizon and be good to go.

Your other options are better if you really don't care much about keeping your number. Good Luck.

I do really want to keep my old number. Is it ok if I tell Verizon that I ported the number to Google voice? Is that not ok with their policy?

Is your current non-unlimited data line still under contract? If you port your number to Google Voice, it'll disconnect that line.

However, you can then port the number from Google Voice back to Verizon and put the number on your brother's Unlimited Data line.

Yes my current non-unlimited data line is under contract for another 1.5 years. Not sure what the early termination fee is.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I apologize to all because I'm sure this has been answered, but

I currently have a family plan with 4 lines.
Line one is mine with udp, using a galaxy s4.
Line 2,3, and 4 are my sons' iphone 4s (currently broke), and two iphone 5s. All three iphones have 2 gigs each.

My udp s4 has an upgrade.
I would like to transfer my upgrade to the iphone 4s, and replace with a iphone 6 plus.
Then I would like to swap the iphone 6plus with the samsung s4.
This way the unlimited phone would be the 6plus, and my son would then have my old samsung.
Is this possible? Can I just do this at Costco?
Thanks for all your help

I would call Verizon's business plan reps and see what they recommend since you are on-contract. After speaking with them, come back to this forum with their response. There is a decent chance that their business reps can help you out especially if you make the argument that the line changes would affect your business (rather than personal).

If the reps say it can't be done, then come back here and we can take you through the steps on how to do it via porting.

What you want to do definitely can be done. However, it cannot be done at Costco. You'll need to order online through Best Buy or Verizon. Just do the following:

1.) Log into Verizon or Best Buy
2.) Transfer your upgrade to the line that has the 4S
3.) Order the 6+ using that upgrade that you transferred and have it shipped home
4.) When the 6+ arrives follow the directions to activate it in place of the 4S (i.e. just activate like normal)
5.) Test the new phone for an hour or so. Make sure that calls, text, and data work.
6.) Shut down both the S4 and the 6+
7.) Log into Verizon online and select "switch/activate device".
8.) Now just switch devices between the lines and follow all directions on the website.

That's all you need to do in order to enjoy the 6+.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wow! Thats it? I thought that this method was shut down by Verizon a few months ago. Well, I'll give it a shot. Thanks again

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok I've been following this forum for a week or two now and I think I'm in the right place amongst the cell phone upgrade gurus!!
I have 2 phones both UDP, both have upgrades available.
I want to upgrade my wife's iPhone 5 to iPhone 6. Apparently BestBuy will not authenticate our acct on their website.
So that being said it looks like I can do the following through Verizon website… please tell me if I'm wrong:
1) order wife the iPhone 6 from the Verizon website using discounted upgrade.
2) when it arrives (do NOT turn on) instead take out her SIM from the iPhone 5, put it in the iPhone 6 and then turn it on.
3) we'll get an activation on our account that will eventually fall off and not lose our UDP.

Does this sound right? My reservations are 1) order from Verizon website and they'll catch us and 2) my wife's iPhone 5 SIM will not work on the iPhone 6.

Thanks in advance all! Especially DuSoccer10!!! :D

This sounds like what may be an option for me.

Longtime reader of this thread. Even well back into when two threads existed for this topic.

Here is where I'm at. I have two lines. My line is month to month UDP(upgrade available) My wife has a 2 gig line which I recently used the upgrade to purchase the Droid Turbo for 1 dollar. It replaced her old Samsung S3 for about an hour and then I switched it out with my DROID RAZR MAXX on the UDP line. My wife still likes her S3 so it went back on the her line.

I would like to use my upgrade for the Note 4. Would it be better to use the upgrade currently on my line and simply do the Best Buy method? Worried about the pending activation. Also thinking of a way to avoid switching out SIM cards.

Or, would it be better to transfer my upgrade to my wife's line, purchase the Note, activate it on her line, and then switch phones around?

This continues to be very helpful thread for those of us wanting to hang on to unlimited data. Thanks so much to those providing so much help.

To get into Best Buy, you need your Billing Password and not your log in password. This can be found through My Verizon in the "View Profile" section. Once you do that, you'll be able to get into Best Buy and order from them. I recommend going this way.

As for the rest of your plans, that's the way to do it. All you need to do is order the iPhone 6 and replace the SIM before turning or plugging in the new phone. Both the iPhone 5 and 6 use the same size SIM (nano).

Also, you are correct in that you'll get a pending activation on your account. Make sure that any features you want active are in place as you will not be able to make account changes for about a month.

I'd recommend just transferring the upgrade to your wife's line and using her tiered plan to upgrade to the Note 4. Follow the directions that I gave in the quoted post and you'll be fine. The good news is that you can order from either Best Buy or Verizon depending on who has the better deal at the time.

Using your line is a little bit more complicated, but can be done assuming you still have the Droid Turbo and a SIM adapter. The Razr Maxx is not a great phone to be upgrading from because of its style of SIM and classification in Verizon's system.

Thanks. That's what I thought might be the way to go. If on the other hand, I were to upgrade from my line would it be better to put the RAZR MAXX back on the line and then just do the Best Buy method? Reason being that both the RAZR MAXX and the Note 4 have micro sim.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just stumbled upon this forum and I gotta say you guys are awesome. I was ready to give up on my dreams of owning the nexus 6 but now there's hope for me.

I have 2 UDP and 1 TDP. Rumor has it that the Nexus 6 will be available on Feb 26th. If that's the case, I want to transfer my upgrade to line 3 TDP. But here's where I'm concern, Line 3 was recently upgraded a few days ago so she now has the G3. I'm hoping this shouldn't be an issue.

Line 1 UDP - GS5
Line 2 UDP - GNEX (upgrade available obviously lol )
Line 3 TDP - G3

So from my understanding, I should purchase the Nexus 6 with Best Buy and have it shipped and activate the phone under Line 3 (so I can program the Nano SIM) Once activated, I should wait an hour and move the Nexus 6 to Line 2 through Verizon's website then assign the G3 back to line 3. Is this process correct?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well, I spoke with Verizon business customer support and they said there is no way to transfer the number from the line that we are de-activating onto the UDP line that I am going to be using.

I guess my only option is to transfer the number to Google voice, terminate that line, and then import the number off of Google Voice onto the UDP line?

I would like to know HOW I port the number from Google Voice onto the phone once I insert the Sim card making it the UDP phone
