[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just wanted to jump in here and mention what I did just last week, on AT&T though.
For simplicity I will use A,B, and C (I am C).
Both A&B have grandfathered unlimited plans where mine (C) was a 5gb tether plan.
I did not use the tether much anymore and didn't like having to pay for such a small amount of data.
By the way A&B always upgraded their iphones with no loss of plans.
So B wanted a new number and didn't care about the unlimited plan.
I wanted the unlimited plan but wasn't really thinking of changing numbers until I thought it might be a good idea.
So (B) changed the number and I changed mine and new sims were registered and put in opposite phones.
The end result was I got a new number and the unlimited plan and B got the new number and reduced the 5gb to 3.
Saving $20 off the bill every month for a total of $240 a year savings. (B) Doesn't use data as much and is on wifi mostly.
We were told last time when I bought my LG G3 that it was impossible to switch the unlimited plan to my G3.
Big thanks to the store rep for not charging anything and making it happen. Now I just need to go back to him and have him unlock my phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

No. I'm talking about the tiered line that you are currently on. When you are ready to port to Google Voice you can do one of two things:

1.) Just port directly to Google Voice, close your current line, and get charged an ETF since your current line is still on contract.

or

2.) To avoid being charged an ETF and keeping your current tiered line open, you can request a new number for it as soon as you request a port to Google Voice. By doing this you'll move your current number to Google Voice and have a brand new number on your old tiered line.

Really, the choice is yours. Do you need to keep your current tiered line for any reason? Do you want to pay an ETF? If you are fine with an ETF and closing your current tiered line, just focus on number 1.

I want to cancel my current line because it will no longer be in use and nobody will be able to make use of it.

Will porting the number to Google Voice immediately close that line? Or will I have to call Verizon after porting to cancel the line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Lots of good questions here:

1.) The edge fee will stay on the line and continue to be included on the monthly bill. The only catch is that she cannot edge up later on as the S5 must be turned in to do so.

2.) You can buy the Note 4 outright on your line and have it activated to maintain your unlimited plan. Even a certified pre-own counts as it would be no different that buying a used phone from a 3rd party.

If you want to use your upgrade, there is a method that should work:

1.) Order a new SIM for your wife's S5 from Verizon.
2.) Order the Note 4 from Best Buy and have it shipped to home.
3.) When the Note 4 arrives, remove and destroy the SIM that came with the phone.
4.) Power down the S5 and remove its SIM. Put your wife's SIM in the Note 4. This will activate the Note 4 on her line.
5.) Now activate the S5 with the new SIM ordered in step 1 on your line.

By doing this method, your line will end up with a pending activation for about a month.

Awesome, thank you. I hadn't thought about ordering the SIM separately through her account. Simple solution there.

Best Buy, here comes the order! :D

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Originally read a while ago that I'd need to upgrade dumb phones to data and swap them to UDP lines afterward and re-activate dumb phones and remove data on those lines.

Now I'm reading (hopefully correctly) I can just mod my current sims and put them into any new phone I order via BB on line.

I appreciate any input. Thanks in advance

5 lines on family plan (1400 shared)

1. Bionic A
2. Bionic B
3. Maxx
4. Flip A
5. Flip B

All eligible for upgrade. Bionics absolutely obsolete and need newer phones.

Bionic A - Want LG G3
Bionic B - Want Iphone 6

All others stay as is for now.

If I read this right, I upgrade phone via Best Buy on line. Upon delivery at home, toss new sim card. Modify bionic sim card to fit into new phone. Power up and enjoy. Activation falls off in month or so. Order proper sized sim if desired after fall off. Repeat for other Bionic.

For the most part, that should work though sometimes people get stuck because the Bionic is classified as a 3G phone in Verizon's system even though it is a 4G. If you are worried about that, or didn't want to deal with cutting SIM cards, there is another method:

1) Through Verizon online, order the iPhone 6 using Bionic A's upgrade on Line 1, picking the 2GB data plan for and have it shipped to home not shipped to store;
2) After the first order is submitted, through Verizon online, order the LG G3 using Bionic B's upgrade on Line 2, picking the 2GB data plan for UDP Line 2 and have it shipped to home not shipped to store;
3) When the new smartphones arrive, do not turn them on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device;
4) Select Line 2 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";*
5) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the iPhone 6 (using Line 1's upgrade in Step 1) and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the phone and follow the directions to activate Line 2's new phone on Line 2;
6) Then click activate or switch a device, select Line 1 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page";
7) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the LG G3 ordered for Line 1 (using Line 2's upgrade in Step 2) and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the phone and follow the directions to activate Line 1's new phone on Line 1.

The key thing is to order the phone on the opposite line's upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Excuse me while I giggle from excitement at new phones with UDP. Can't wait to do this. Thanks for the opposite line upgrade part. Unlimited is the shizz. So far this month mine is at 25 gig. The other two have barely dented the 500 mb threshold. I could not imagine how much more I'd use it if my browser didn't crash every time I try to open it.

I certainly will re-read this about 40 times, then actually try it.

Thanks again!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm kind of lost on some parts of this. I would appreciate if someone could help me out. I have 2 lines. Line 1- RAZR Maxx UDP. Line 2- LG G2 TDP eligible for upgrade. I want a Droid Turbo on Line 1. Could I upgrade Line 2 with Turbo then cut the RAZR Maxx Sim and put it in Turbo before activating? Or should I activate Turbo on line 2 then deactivate and swap my cut Sim from RAZR Maxx?

Sorry for the reply on my post. Line 2 is an LG Spectrum 2

You don't need to bother with cutting a SIM since you have an unlimited and a tiered line. All you need to do is the following:

1.) Upgrade Line 2 to the Turbo and have it shipped to home
2.) When it arrives activate the Turbo on Line 2
3.) Wait at least an hour, make sure the new phone works (calls, texts, and data)
4.) Power down the Turbo
5.) Log into Verizon online and reactivate the LG Spectrum 2 on Line 2
6.) Now you can add the Turbo directly to Line 1 without cutting a SIM. This can be done online at Verizon

Now enjoy the Turbo on your unlimited line!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a UDP on a single line. Is my only option to upgrade a full price phone?

Does the BB method still work? I was looking at the HTC M8 instead of my current the HTC Rezound.

Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anybody used the new sim card that came with the new phone after keeping unlimited data with the old sim card? I did this whole thing and got a Galaxy S5 and kept unlimited data about 6 months ago. Now i just got the 5.0 Lollipop update and i can't send mms messages. After doing some research i found out my apn values are not the correct ones and i can't change them. My S5 is on 5.0 rooted and there's no app or a manual way to do this. I want to put the original sim card that came with the phone to see if that'll change the apn values or if it'll give me the option to change them. I'm not worried about my unlimited plan but if something else gets screwed up where i have to go in and get help, i would have to unroot .

New question:

Won't upgrading a phone on my account and not activating it on that line result in me being charged retail for the phones by VZW? I liken it to ordering a new phone via eligible upgrade, never activating it, selling it on Ebay and never seeing it again. VZW whacks you for that phone that was never activated on your account.

Or am I OK because while it is not activated on that line, it still is on the same account?

Thanks

Currently, Verizon does not go after unactivated phones. That's why all these methods are useful. It's a way of getting a phone for the on-contract price. Besides, these methods result in you agreeing to a new 2 year contract. So, Verizon is making money either way.

Verizon is more likely to just cancel all unlimited lines rather than go after unactivated phones (since you are paying for them anyways).

Don't use the SIM that came with the phone as it is programmed to change your plan once activated. If you need a new SIM, as long as you do not have a pending activation on your account, it is safe to get a new SIM from Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I should order a new sim for the phone I want to get via the BB method?

The sim I have now will be too big. Rezound to a M8

No. You'll need to use a SIM cutter.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is this possible?

Line 1 - unlimited - no upgrade available
Add a line from Best Buy (droid turbo $49 or LG G3 .01)

Do not activate droid turbo or lg g3, just pop in sim from Line 1 unlimited (HTC One m8 nano sim)

Thanks
