[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

dusoccer10

I got the g3 for line 3 TDP from BB.
activated it on line 3
waited 24 hours
transferred upgrade from line 1 UDP to line 3 TDP on VZ website
switched G3 to line 1
went to BB website to order next G3 on line 3. It is telling me
"Even though this line isn't eligible for an upgrade yet, you can use a different line's eligibility to upgrade today."
Should i transfer upgrade on BB website?

Yes if you want to order a phone from Best Buy. When you transfer upgrades on Verizon, they don't stick once you leave the webpage. Best Buy is the only other retailer that allows you to transfer upgrades.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

HOLY CRAP!!! It worked again!!!! I just got my upgraded phone delivered to my house from Verizon online, and did the following steps, checked my account and low and behold my contract renewed for another two years, but my plan stayed the same! Do this AT YOUR OWN RISK! I did this two years ago and did not believe id get away with it again-pretty much felt if I wanted the new phone at subsidized rate, that was the risk I had to take. So again, do this at your own risk. I don't want to recommend it for someone to lose their UDP, just wanted to provide how I did it, and got away with it two years in a row.

Here's the steps:
1. For single line users with UDP and upgrade, go through the upgrade process...I picked a 4gb plan just so I'd have some data at an affordable rate if it didn't work.
2. HAVE IT SHIPPED TO YOU
3. When you get the phone, DO NOT TURN IT ON OR PLUG IT IN.
4. Ensure everything on old phone is backed up. Turn old phone off, and take out sim.
5. With new phone still off, take the NEW sim out and destroy. Then replace old sim into the new phone.
6. Turn new phone on. 😳
7. I set it up as a new phone, and went back after setup to put in passwords and link accounts and restore everything.
8. Give a friend or fam a call or text to make sure it's able to.
9. Go on my Verizon to check account, try not to get to nauseous from anticipation.
10. Go into plan details, and if you were lucky enough like I was, it will show that you still have your UDP and it'll give you a new contract date.

I am in complete disbelief that it worked again after two years. It sounds a lot like the BB method, only it is MUCH riskier as I haven't heard of anyone else ever doing it.

AGAIN, do not follow the activation instructions that come from Verizon.
For people newly reading about my situation, I upgraded from an iPhone 5 to the iPhone 6.

I do not know if this works for family lines or anything else, as I have only ever done it on my single line plan, with unlimited text and data.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

We have 2 UDP lines,
Both with upgrades available for years.
My s4 went south. I tether from it.

How do we go about the latest and greatest upgrade.

Which phones do you currently have and what do you want to upgrade to?

iPhone and s4
Keep iPhone and get best android to replace broken s4

Do people tether and use pads for phoning?

Is verizon udp worth keeping?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I would strongly advise against doing that. I personally know a co-worker who did that and had his UDP taken away after a month and half. Verizon just sent him a letter telling him that it was a mistake and that they had moved him to the tiered data plan. (the one that he agreed to when he ordered the phone on Verizon's own website)

Thanks for sharing. This basically sounds like the 'Best Buy Method', where you remove the new sim and activate it with the old UDP sim. I wonder if Verizon will start cracking down on those too, since it clearly says on the BB website that UDP is no longer available.

It doesn't bother me either way, since I always transferred my UDP upgrades to Basic phones when it was able to be done without having a data plan on the basic line for 2 years.

Hopefully, pringles089 will be OK. Is your friend going to try to fight this in anyway?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I need to ask again only because I did not get an answer the first time around:

If I port my number to Google Voice (it says it remains on the account for 90 days) would I be able to port it OFF of Google Voice before the 90 period goes all the way through? Realistically I plan on porting and them immediately porting back.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yeah that's why I signed up for a plan I could afford, just in case. Last time I did it they let me keep it because they said it was their error, but I wasn't sure that it'd happen again. I've been checking my account daily just to see. Lol thanks for the heads up though!

I can't predict the future but my brother in June 2014, me in July 2014, and spouse in Jan. 2015 all did the Best Buy Method / SIM swap and have kept our UDP since then.

I am 90% sure you should be OK. I think the 90 day rule only applies if you choose to change your Google Voice number to something else, in which case you'll have 90 days to keep the original number. If you choose to delete your Google Voice account completely, you also have a 90 window to change your mind and reclaim your number.

Porting it and out of Google Voice doesn't require any waiting period as far as I know.

The difference is that you did it through Best Buy rather than Verizon as Pringles did. The Best Buy method is slightly safer for single-line plans because there are two different systems at play (Best Buy's and Verizon's). If you do the SIM swap through Verizon, in theory, it is easier for them to catch it because it's all one system.

Of course, this doesn't explain why some other methods work fine through Verizon. My guess is that it is a single-plan thing.

You should be able to port it without any problems. The 90 day thing is only for requesting a new Google Voice number. It would only come into play if you request a new number. Google would be required to hold your old number for 90 days in case you change your mind. After the 90 days, your old number would then be free to be assigned to someone else.

With porting, this doesn't matter as you are keeping the number but changing service providers. You'll be fine.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Are you saying to buy a full price phone at BB?

Or upgrade a UDP line at BB and switch card?

Do online or instore?

Does it matter which line I use?

What happens to Udp if it disappears and I return phone?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Have S4, going to?
SIM card problems?

And physically destroy, or just never use?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Tried to order from BB online.
It needed confirmation of number and upgrade and then told me to call Verizon for confirm with error code 2051.
Is this OK?
