[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1) Through Verizon online, order the Nexus using a basic line's upgrade, picking the 2GB data plan for the basic line and have it shipped to home

2) When the Nexus 6 arrives, do not turn it on, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device; and

3) Select the UDP Line and that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before, type in the IMEI of the new smartphone and the SIM card number of the SIM card that shipped with the new smartphone and follow the directions to activate the new smartphone on the UDP line.

It's pretty straightforward...just upgrade the basic line but don't activate the phone on it. Instead, just activate the phone directly onto the unlimited line and you'll be all set.

When I went to purchase the phone online it made me confirm that the dumb line will need a data plan for the whole term of the contract. So with this method will I still be able to keep the dumb line as is once i transfer and activate the new phone?

No. According to the wiki on slickdeals.net people are losing unlimited data before the phone ships.

That's normal. If you activate the phone directly on the unlimited line, it will not cause the data plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

what is the process of activation for this case? as far as the simcard use, will i be using the new simcard comes with S5 or use the existing TDP's simcard? not so clear about this....

1) transfer upgrade to the tiered line

2) order the S5 on the tiered line and have it shipped home.

3) activate the phone following the directions that come with the phone.

4) after an hour, log into Verizon in order to out the old phone back on the tiered line

5) now out the S5 on the unlimited line

Verizon online will give you step by step instructions. You'll end up using the new Simcard, but recode it to unlimited data.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, so change of plans. I just need someone to verify this for me...

5 lines

1 - UDP
2 - UDP
3-5 - BASIC (no data)

I have 3 upgrades. Each UDP line, and 1 basic line.

I want to upgrade both UDP to iPhone 6 - From a Note 3 and an S4.

STEPS:
1- Call Verizon and advise I purchased 2 used iPhones and have SIMs sent to me
2-Use the Basic upgrade at BB.Com and purchase an iPhone..(Is there anything special I need to choose/do here?)
3-Once the new phone arrives, destroy the SIM that comes with it and put in the one I got from Verizon? (Not sure if this is the correct step or not)
4-Turn on phone and active
5-Is there a waiting period I should stick to before transferring another upgrade to the basic line and trying to upgrade again? If not, then I will transfer 1 of the upgrades from one of the UDP lines to a basic line, and rinse/repeat the above steps correct?

Are there any steps I am missing or anything I should do differently? Thank you all for the help!

That's could work, but it's even simpler than that:

1) order an iPhone on the basic line and have it shipped from home (either Best Buy or Verizon)

2) when it arrives, activate it directly onto an unlimited line through Verizon online. Just use the IMEI and SIM numbers and select a phone that has never been on the account.

For the second iPhone follow the same directions. Only difference is to transfer an upgrade to a basic line first before starting the process.

Your plan is very similar with the new SIM cards and would work too. Either way, you'll use the IMEI and SIM numbers to activate the phone onto an unlimited line. Both ways code the SIM for unlimited data.

So I don't need to get new SIMs sent to me and toss the ones that come with the new phone?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

That's not necessary because you are upgrading on a different line than the one you will eventually activate the iPhone on. When you upgrade the basic line, the SIM that comes with the phone is coded for a 2GB data plan. However, when you log into Verizon and activate the new iPhone directly onto your unlimited line, the process ends up recoding the SIM to your unlimited data. This is why you can use the SIMs that come with the phones if they have been ordered on a different line.

Getting SIMs ahead of time works fine too. This is because the Verizon system will code or recode the SIMs to unlimited data when you go to activate the phones online. What people need to realize about SIM cards is that they are nothing different than a computer hard-drive. Just like a hard drive can be reformatted and changed, the same can be said about SIM cards. They are able to be reformatted to fit different cell phone plans.

Thanks for your response.

Between the step 3 to 4, do you have to log into website to change the old phone back on the tiered line? Can I just remove the sim and put the UDP sim to the S5? will this change terms? or is this not a recommended method?

You can just swap the SIMs if everything is the same size SIM.

So I read this in a previous post.. is this not the case for me? And can you explain why just for my knowledge?
With that said, just go online and transfer your upgrade to the tiered line through Best Buy. Order the S5 for the tiered line and have it shipped home. Activate the phone on the tiered line for an hour or so. Then log into Verizon and move the new S5 on to the unlimited data.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If you go to BB's site to pre order the S6 on Verizon it says 'In Store Only'. Have they caught on to this or is it just because Verizon's own pre order officially starts 4/1? I hope you can pre order online at BB on the 1st otherwise I'm not sure how we can get the S6 and keep unlimited via BB.

Best Buy has been doing this for a while. Pre-orders and new phones are typically in store only for the first month or so. The same thing happened with the Note 4.

After you have activated the new phone on the tiered line, if the SIM matches the unlimited, you can just swap them if like. If you log into Verizon, it will make you do this anyways.

In your first post, you indicated having 2 unlimited and 3 basic lines. Do you have a tiered line? If so, that changes the process and my recommendation.

If you do not have a tiered line, your best bet it to upgrade a basic line but activate the phone directly onto an unlimited line. My steps will prevent the basic line from becoming a tiered line and avoiding the monthly data charge.

What is your end goal with your plan? Do you want 2 unlimited and 3 basic or 2 unlimited, 2 basic, and 1 tiered?

Got it thanks! Stinks as the other carriers you can pre order online via BB. Just Verizon does this. Looks like if I want the S6 and keep my unlimited I have to wait a month like you said. Ah well, maybe the price will drop by then and my forced patience will be beneficial anyway!

Ultimate goal is 2 udp and 3 basic.. so I will follow your plan.. just wanted to understand :) Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have the nationwide talk share plan
Line#1 UDP w/ upgrade- galaxy nexus
Line#2 basic w/upgrade
Line#3 basic w/upgrade.

So if I want an iphone 6 plus on line 1, how would I upgrade line 3 and then put the basic phone back on line 3 at 9.99/mo. The other thing is the Sim card from the nexus and iPhone aren't compatible. Could I use the new Sim on iPhone and keep the UDP?
