[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am not worried. I just curious what has happened in past and help others if interested get the info.

I still would like to know if the 2 year contract gets lost and you don't see it anywhere on account

That's the thing...no one really knows what is causing the glitch to keep the upgrade and month-to-month on the unlimited line. Because of this, no one knows the answers to your questions. Most likely, Verizon can see the dates you use the upgrades. As for any actions they may take, your guess is as good as mine. That's why my advice is to be smart about how often you use the upgrade (though, it might disappear after the next time you use it depending on when/if Verizon fixes it).

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry - just clarifying

1- G4 UDP - no contract
2- iphone 4s- udp - no contract
3- iphone 4s- TDP- no contract
4-basic- contract
5-basic-contract

I want to upgrade the line 2 iphone -with UDP to iphone 6. Order through best buy on line 3- ship to house.

Do i HAVE to activate on line 3 temporarily? (my father in law- pain in the ***- hoping to avoid) or can i just log on and put ISN and SIM numbers on line 2 on my verizon and switch device there? thanks all- this is repetitive for you all that are answering, but I greatly appreciate the personalized clarification.

Was the being smart about how often you use the upgrades directed towards my post? Wasn't sure and didn't want to order another phone if the wise ones do not advise this haha. You all are great! Very glad I found this forum and the help.

No, you do not have to. I don't know if you can change the sim from best buy to your line. You may need to get a new SIM. You will just be left with a pending activation on line 3. This will go away in a couple months.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I want the S6 but with 5 lines UDP is it better to do the pre-order or wait till the release? I want to minimize the risk of loosing UDP

All of your lines are Unlimited Data? What phones is on the line you want the S6 on? If it is a phone with a Nano Sim I would do the Aohus method from Slickdeals.net. Order the phone from Verizon on a different line then the one you want the phone on. When the phone is delivered do not turn it on. Remove and destroy the SIM. Place the sim from the line you want the phone on into the phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was going to upgrade all 5 phones to S6. I have a sim cutter to cut the sims and I know I will have to sand the tops as well. Just did not know if it was less of a chance doing the pre-order or if it increases the chance of losing UDP. Also how will I know if I have been caught and need to cancel the order?

It's probably safe to do another upgrade if you want to. My suggestion on being smart was to not abuse this if your upgrade does not disappear. This is a much different loophole than the ones we all use to keep unlimited data. See, our current plans include the costs of a subsidized phone even if we are off contract. That's why Verizon has not gone too hard after us. Sure, they have made upgrading difficult, but we are not affecting their bottom line in anyway since our plans already include the phone cost.

With the upgrade not disappearing, this can lead to potential abuse by some people. In other words, they buy multiple phones subsidized and then resell them for profit. Once a person has purchased more subsidized phones than he or she has off contract data lines, you are now costing Verizon money and affecting their bottom line. Most likely, the punishments for this will be a lot more severe as you'll probably be facing termination of service.

Of course, the above is just my opinion.

Ideally, you activate the new phone briefly on the tiered line before moving to the unlimited line. However, if that is not feasible (I understand!!), you method is:

1.) Use the upgrade on Line 1 or 3 or move Line 2's onto either 4 or 5.
2.) Order the iPhone 6 using the upgrade you decided to use from step 1. The phone can be ordered from either Best Buy or Verizon and must be shipped to home.
3.) When the new phone arrives, do not turn on the phone or plug it in.
4.) Log into Verizon online and select "activate/switch device". Choose Line 2 and select "phone has never been on the account before". Now enter the IMEI and SIM numbers of the new phone. Follow the rest of the directions so that the iPhone becomes activated on Line 2.

By directly activating the iPhone onto Line 2, you'll have a pending activation on the Line use used to upgrade (1, 3-5). This line cannot do anything to its plans for a month or so until the pending activation falls off.

You don't have to worry about a pending activation if you upgrade Line 3 and activate it on Line 3 for a little bit. However, if you don't see your plan changing anytime soon, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

L1: S4 UDP upgrade
L2: Basic No Upgrade

I have a Nano Sim from VZW and planning to use the Best Buy method to keep UDP and preorder the Galaxy S6. I also have a nano-micro adapater and was thinking of activating the SIM on the S4. Can I do that online from the Verizon site? Can I use it to directly activate on L1 when the S6 get here? Which method is better?

my 2 cents

It is safe to pre-order the S6 as long as you do two things:

1.) Order each line separately so that each line gets its own data pool (do not upgrade all at the same time and switch your plan to a More Everything!)
2.) Make sure the S6 can be shipped to home (typically Best Buy does not ship to home brand new releases; though, I don't know what they are doing with the S6).

As for how to activate them, you again have two options:

3.) Cut your current SIMs to nano size with the SIM cutter you already own
or
4.) You can activate each phone on a different line using the included IMEI and SIM numbers. You'll need to be extremely organized to go this route, but it would bypass having to cut your current SIMs.

Ah, I completely understand what you are saying and I appreciate your opinion and the information provided! Makes perfect sense too. I was just more concerned with upgrading my phone and keeping my unlimited data because I use so much. :) Thanks again! I shall move forward with another order shortly.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Also, another question- does verizon remember the device information in my verizon? Say for instance I was going to use someones line (the line used to get the upgraded phone) for an hour until i could activate the phone on the UDP line i truly want, can i log back into my verizon and switch the old phone back on or will it ask me for the ISN and Sim number on the old phone? Just wondering if I can pull a sneak attack some late night I know the phone wouldnt be missed it it werent activated for an hour. Is this possible?

I believe the system does remember the phones. The problem is you will need access to the phone. It will need to be turned off to activate the new phone. You will then need to reprogram the 4s by calling *228.

If you are ordering the phone from Best buy with that upgrade you can just bypass activating it on that line and be left with the pending activation. As long as he dies not try to change phones for the next couple months you won't notice the pending activation.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

HI I am trying to figure this out. I have two lines

L1: Galaxy S3 UDP, upgrade available
L2: Basic phone, upgrade available

I want to order Galaxy S6 from best buy

My plan is to order the S6 using the upgrade on my L2 basic phone through best buy. When it arrives, log into Verizon online and activate the phone directly onto the unlimited line (L1). Use the IMEI and SIM numbers that come with the phone.

My question/confusion comes from if I order from best buy and not verizon do I have to destroy the sim that comes with the phone? I know my Galaxy S3 sim isn't compatible. I do not want to order a nano sim ahead of time either. Do I need to order it through Verizon using this method or can I do the same thing through Best Buy? I just want to make sure that the sim I get with the phone, that I ordered from Best Buy, when reprogrammed to the UDP line (L1) won't cause me to lose UDP or be stuck with a new TDP for 2 years on the basic line.

Thank you

I don't know if the Best Buy sim can be reprogrammed. I know the Verizon ones can be. I would not risk it. I would destroy the SIM and then get a new SIM from Verizon or purchase one one eBay or an authorized retailer.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have
1. UDP with upgrade
2. 2gb plan no upgrade.
Has anyone been able to preorder from Best buy? I first tried to transfer my upgrade to line 2. Best buy didn't recognize this. I then tried to pre-order using my 1st line, it directs me to call Verizon. (which I gather is a no-no) Anyone else been successful? Do I need to pick the phone up in store? I've been using the ship to home option.
Thanks.
(I mainly want to pre order through Best Buy for the free wireless charger.)

Best Buy is usually in store only on new phones. If it is letting you ship it make sure your bill is paid on Verizon. If you have one do, pay it and then try again.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Okay thanks! I'll try the in store option. It's a 45 minute drive, but I want that free charger.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

BEST THREAD EVER! THANKS TO EVERYONE! I think I'm about to try the BB Method.
Line1 iPhone6plus, UDP, No Upgrade
Line2 Dummy Line (I have been paying $10/mo. and using this line for upgrades only) Upgrade Available.

Does it matter that no actual phone is active on line 2? I'm thinking I need to upgrade line 2 to a Galaxy s6 through BB and have it delivered and destroy the sim. Can someone confirm this will work ok? Thanks!
