[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I wanna know if it's save to call verizon to add insurance on my Nexus 6. I previously had he galaxy nexus and I transferred my upgrade to my TDP using the best buy method. I do remember seeing the insurance when I purchased the phone. I only have a few days before I reach the 30 day period. Adding the insurance online is not possible as there's no option to add it. Can anyone help me out?

Did you activate the Nexus 6 on the tiered line before moving it to the unlimited line? If yes, then it should be safe to call Verizon as you would not have a pending activation. If you activated the Nexus 6 directly on the unlimited line, after ordering the upgrade on the tiered, then it would not be safe.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Are you keeping the new phone or is the relative getting the new phone? Which smartphone do you have and what do you want?

The relative gets the new phone (iPhone 6). Totally separate account. I am using my iPhone 6+ on the account now.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Why do I need to transfer upgrade when both lines are eligible?I apologize for being unclear, I should have stated that more clearly in my post but it was late and I was on deadline for Costco rebate:

Line 1 UDP eligible for upgrade
Line 2 2 gig plan iPhone 5 eligible for upgrade
Line 3-5 basic phones

With this scenario can't I just activate line 2 Sim when it comes, later transfer new sim back to iPhone, and then put my sim in Samsung S6?
As dusoccer mentioned just upgrade your tiered line. You can do this with any of the sellers.

Your unlimited data is at risk when you use that upgrade. If you want to use an upgrade again later, the best way is to transfer the upgrade from the unlimited line to the tiered line. This should be done online on the Verizon Website.

Yes I activated the Nexus 6 on the tiered line and waited an hour before moving to my unlimited line. Should I call them directly or just use the chat on their website. Now sure if there's a difference.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 4 Lines:
L1 UDP S3 Yes - Out of Contract
L2 UDP Galaxy Nexus Yes - Out of Contract
L3 UDP Galaxy Nexus Yes - Out of Contract
L4 UDP Galaxy Nexus - NO - In Contract

I posted previously because I was going to get S5's on my lines, but now after looking at the S6 would like to see if I can get S6 on L1 and L4, Move the S3 to L2, and get IPhone 5 on L3.

Anyhow, since my sim cards would all be different sizes, I'm not sure I can do Best Buy..and Best Buy won't ship S6 to home anyway. As for the sim cards, I can cut them down.....

Can I buy the phones on Verizon's site, using for example, my upgrade for L4 on L1, and vice versa, and then swap the sims when the new phones arrive?

Since the S3 is the best of the 4 phones I have, and I only have 3 upgrades, I should probably keep the S3
Am I trying to do too much swapping around?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

L1 UDP, Iphone 6+
L2 Dummy phone $10/mo. (no phone on the line) Upgrade Eligible
Plan to upgrade L2 to a tiered data plan. I would purchase the s6.

I would then use the s6 on L1 and maybe use the Iphone 6+ on L1 also from time to time.

When I get the s6 activated at bestbuy, do I need to wait an hour before putting the L1 sim into the s6?
Is it ok to freely swap the sims back and forth between the phones or do I need to do anything on verizon's website?

Thanks in advance!

***BTW for anyone wondering about Bestbuy and home delivery of the s6, my sister ordered one and it is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. She said she had to pay $25 to have it fedexed in order to get it delivered. So it is possible to have it delivered to home.

You can just swap the sim, no need to do anything on the website. You should wait until the phone registers on the website. It will probably less then an hour. That will take care of the pending activation.

I assume you know line 2 will be locked into data for 2 years if you do it this way?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

This is another request for direction...

Line #1 - UDL with an upgrade available.
Line #2 - Feature phone

A year and a half ago I used the upgrade that was available on line #2 and moved that phone over to line #1. I now would like to use the upgrade that is on line #1 and pass that phone on to a relative. I believe that I may need to move the upgrade that is on line # 1 to line #2 after taking the current upgraded phone off of line #1. The upgrade does not appear until I take the upgraded phone off of line #1. I would add the current upgraded phone back to line #1 after transferring the upgrade to line #2.

The question is what do I do after I move the upgrade to keep from losing my UDL?

Haven't seen a reply to this post so here is my plan. Someone please let me know if I am about to do something that will cause me to lose my unlimited data.

I plan to transfer the upgrade on line 1 to line 2. I will then go to BB and purchase the upgraded phone for line 2. After it has been activated, I will take the upgraded phone off of line 2 and put the feature phone back on that line. I will then send the new phone to the relative to be activated on a different account.

I have assumed that no SIM card swapping is needed and that the data plan on line 1 would not be affected.

As long as you activate the new S6's on a different lines than where the upgrades came from, you can easily get what you want. It will take some time, and you'll need to place 3 individual orders, but you just need to do the following:

1.) Through Verizon online, order a S6 using the upgrade on Line 2 and have it shipped to home
2.) When the new smartphone arrives, do not turn it on or plug it in, rather log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch a device
3.) Select Line 1 - it should ask you if you want to activate or verify the new device that was just shipped to you - you click "No, I want to activate a different device" or "Not activating my new device at this time, take me to the Activate or Switch Device page"
4.) Select that you want to activate a device that has not been on your account before
5.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers of the S6 and follow the rest of the directions to activate the S6 on Line 1

This will now get you a S6 on line 1 and all other lines/phones are still the same. The next step is to move the S3 to Line 2. Just follow the directions I listed above from steps 3-5. The only difference is that you would select Line 2 and that you have a phone previously on your account (S3).

Once this is done, then you just need to repeat steps 1-5 above by changing the lines. Use Line 1's upgrade to get an iPhone on Line 3. Use Line 3's upgrade to get a S6 on Line 4. All of this will take a little bit of time, so be prepared for that. Do not try to rush the process.

If you run into any problems, you can try cutting the SIMs as a last resort. However, the above should work just fine for you account.

If you do that, you'll be stuck with a data plan on Line 2. Verizon got rid of that loophole last August.

If you activated the phone on the tiered line first, then you would not have a pending activation on your account. It should be safe to contact Verizon. The method doesn't matter.

I had assumed that would be the consequence. I would ask if that is the only consequence and if there is a better way? The contract on the upgraded phone that is on line 1 expires in January.

Wait. Are you saying that I would still have the tiered data plan on Line 2 even after I put the feature phone back on the line?

Here is what you do:

1.) Go online to either Best Buy or Verizon and move the upgrade to Line 2
2.) Order the new smartphone that you want and have it shipped to home
3.) When the new smartphone arrives remove the SIM card that was shipped and destroy it!
4.) Give the new smartphone to the relative
5.) Have the relative take the phone to Verizon for activation on his/her own account

This method will not affect your data plan on Line 1 and it will avoid you paying for a data on Line 2.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anyone know if I order a new SIM will I loose the unlimited plan?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Many thanks!

Noticed today that Verizon is offering an early upgrade on line #2. Best Buy is indicating that there isn't an upgrade available on that line. Now I am wondering if I use the early upgrade that is on line 2, if I can keep the upgrade on line 1.

Deciding between staying with my backordered S6 pre order with best lie or switching to verizon and getting phone wed.

Currently Verizon has a 50 dollar rebate on the S6. If I do this method am I giving up the rebate?

Also I assume you will be charged the 40 dollar upgrade fee on verizon where as I hear at best buy the fee is only 35 and that you don't actually get charged when doing this method on their site.

It looks like, based on the potential playout of the questions above it could cost, 40, 50, or 90 bucks more to go with Verizon website using this method vs waiting it out with best buy. Need your guys help to know exactly. Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If you activate it on the dumbphone line it is possible you will be stuck paying for data on that line for 2 years. I am not 100 percent positive if this happens on transfers. On a direct upgrade of a basic line this does happen.

The pending activation will go away in a couple months. It will only be a problem if you want change the phone on that line.

So far so good. I cut the sim and placed it into the S6 and it worked right away. I still have Unlimited Data.
What should I do with the SIM that came with the S6? Do I need to discard it or can I place it in the S4 and give that phone to someone else?

You need to cut the SIM in half and throw it away. You can always give away the S4 to someone else without a SIM. That person can take the phone to Verizon in order to get it activated.
