[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I understand what you are trying to do and theoretically it should work. However, there were many posters on the long Slickdeals thread that struggled updating from a S3 to something more modern. The hard part is that the new nano-SIM cannot be activated in your S3. Verizon's system won't allow it because the S3 requires a micro and Verizon's system reads your new SIM as nano. This is mismatched and Verizon's system cannot handle that.

Now, there used to be an old method where you pre-ordered a SIM of the correct size and use that new SIM in place of the SIM that ships with the phone. You would log into Verizon and use the pre-ordered SIM number and the IMEI of the S6. However, there have been people struggling with doing that too. This would be the way to go, but there is no promise it will work.

If the new pre-ordered SIM does not work, then you'll be left with either cutting your old SIM or taking the S6 to a VAR. Flip back a couple of pages and read my interactions with Dgirl1229 as she tried what you are trying. She ended up taking it to a VAR. For the most part, VAR's do not care as much as a retail store. Just say you won a S6, but it didn't have a SIM inside and you want to activate it on your unlimited line. It should cost around $10, but there have been many people on the Slickdeals thread plus Dgirl1229 here that have made it work.

Yep, didn't work with the new sim card ordered from Verizon. This is the error message I get when trying to activate the new S6 with the new sim card:
The device you're activating is not compatible with your current plan. Please select a Data Plan below.

I think i'm going to get the sim card cutter and try that way..

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with my specific situation.

I have done the whole switching lines thing successfully when I got my S4 almost 2 years ago but I've heard that Verizon has gotten more strict since then. I also have a new issue because of the switch from a micro to nano SIM card.

I want to upgrade my Galaxy S4 to an S6. I currently have the Verizon Nationwide Talk and Text Share 2000 plan. We have 4 lines on our plan and they are as follows:

Line 1: Unlimited data (upgrade available now)
Line 2: Unlimited data (upgrade available now)
Line 3: Smart phone with 2GB of data (upgrade in September)
Line 4: basic phone (upgrade July 7th 2015).

I heard the best method is to do this through Best Buy. If I am correct, I would follow these steps:

1. Transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 4 using the Best Buy website? Or line 3? Is it better to transfer to a smart phone line or to a basic line?
2. Buy the S6 on line 4
3. Get it shipped to my home address (not in-store pickup)
4. Do not turn on the device and remove the pre-installed SIM card
5. insert my old SIM card into the S6 and activate it on line 4
6. Make calls and send texts for a couple of hours
7. Power it off and transfer back the basic phone to line 4
8. Activate the S6 on my line (line 1)

Would this work?
My other question is that since my S4 has a mico SIM card and the S6 has a nano SIM card, am I able to ask Verizon for a new nano SIM card (and say I bought a phone from a friend) and then transfer the data from my old SIM card to my new SIM card without losing any of my data? What step of the plan would I do that on?

My last question is if I am transferring my upgrade from line 1 to line 4, will both lines have to wait 2 years for a new upgrade? Or will line 4 still have its planned upgrade in September? If transferring my upgrade to that line means I am essentially losing 2 upgrades for 1, is it even worth it?

I'm sorry this post is so long but I wanted to be as specific as possible. If someone would be so kind to tell me exactly what to do and as specifically as possible in my situation I would be very thankful. (I mean explain this as if I were 5 haha)

Thank you!!

Either a sim cutter or taking the phone to VAR should do the trick.

You should transfer it to the tiered line. You can activate it on that line. I would just swap the lines online to avoid getting a new sim for line 1. Then just reactivate the old phone on line 3.

This will not change the upgrade date for Line 3.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I tried searching for an answer to this, but it's a difficult search term cuz it uses such common words:

Is it safe to enable HD Voice (aka Advanced Calling)? This is the only way to get simultaneous voice/data right?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello,

Just like most other people on this thread, I would like to confirm that my plan will work before I actually take the chance and order the phone. My goal is to upgrade my S4 to the S6 Edge. I am part of a family plan, and there is a Tiered Data Plan line that is eligible for an upgrade. I would simply be able to order the S6 on the TDP line, activate it for an hour or so (making calls/texts/etc.), then put my SIM card into it and use it on my line without losing my UDP, correct?

My only issue is that I obviously have a Micro SIM in my S4. Can I have some advice on what would be easier? Either getting a Nano SIM from Verizon (by just asking for one?) and somehow activating it on my UDP line without messing anything up. Or cutting down my Micro SIM to fit (I'm admittedly a little nervous about doing this one but am willing to compromise if it is the best option).

I greatly appreciate the help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a Two Line Nationwide 700 Talk N Text Share w/ Unltd Data on both.
L1 UD Not eligible
L2 UD Eligible
I used the BBM on L2 and ordered an iPhone 6 Plus Gold 64GB and it'll be here Tuesday, I already have an iPhone 6 on L2 with a nano sim so when it arrives destroy new sim and insert UD sim and voila...I hope!! *crossing fingers* Bought the i6 16GB cash because I thought couldn't upgrade, but now I get to upgrade to the 6+ 64GB and sell my 6 and make money back!!! Yay! ^.^

Since you are not using the upgrade from the unlimited line you have many options. 1. You can swap them online.
2. You can go to a Verizon Store and have them swap it.
3. You can call Verizon and tell them you need a new SIM.

So with this scenario, there is really no way that I could lose my UDP? I've never requested or activated a new SIM before so I wasn't sure about the process. After purchasing/activating on the TDP line, I can just go on VZW's site and switch the new S6 first, then activate the SIM? Otherwise the SIM wouldn't be compatible with the line, right?

Thanks for the quick reply, sorry if I am over thinking this.

Don't even worry about swapping SIMs. All you need to do is the following:

1.) Order the S6 on the tiered line and have it shipped to home
2.) When the phone arrives, activate it on the tiered line by following the directions shipped with it
3.) Wait an hour and make sure calls, texts, and data all work
4.) After an hour, power down the S6
5.) Log onto Verizon online and reactivate the old phone that was on the tiered line
6.) Now activate the S6 on the unlimited line

You don't need a new SIM card because the activation processes reprogram the SIM to the plan. When you activate the old phone, the SIM in that phone will over-ride the SIM that shipped with the S6.

Your plan should work just fine.

In your situation, it is very easy to upgrade:

1.) Transfer an upgrade to Line 3 (the tiered one) and order the S6 to be shipped to home. You can do this at either Best Buy or Verizon online.
2.) When the S6 arrives, follow the activation directions that come with it. You want to activate the S6 on the tiered line.
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure that the S6 is working. Test calls, texts, and data.
4.) After an hour, power off the S6
5.) Log into Verizon online and reactivate the old phone that was the tiered line.
6.) The S6 is now free to be used on an unlimited line. Just follow the directions online to activate the S6.

It's a very easy process for someone in your situation. You do not need new SIM cards since they are re-programmable. Just make sure to keep the old phone and SIM around so that you can reactivate it.

Transferring the upgrade will only extend the contract of the line that the upgrade came from. In this case, it would extend either Line 1 or 2 depending on which one you upgrade. The tiered line will still have its upgrade in September.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1 UDP - upgrade available
Line 2 TDP - no upgrade

Can I just transfer the upgrade from line 1 to line 2 and when the phone comes in keep it and activate it on line 2? Or do I need to destroy the sim that it's shipped with and put the sim from line 2 in the phone.

Thank you

Your good to go. Just transfer the phone and activate it per the directions. No need to worry about your unlimited since you transferred the upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, I'm trying to do the 4Ever method using Best Buy and when I go to the Best Buy website to transfer my UDP upgrade to the TDP line with no upgrade, I cannot find away to do the transfer. I tried checking eligibility on the UDP line and the TDP line and no option to transfer an upgrade comes up. The TDP line just offers me Verizon Edge.

Did Best Buy stop doing upgrade transfers online? Or am I doing something wrong? Please help, thanks!

Best Buy does not let everyone transfer upgrades. I don't think I have ever been able to.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello!

I would like to post my process and ask if someone could help me out with what steps I should take. I have read this thread extensively but I can't find the key piece of information I am looking for.

I have 1 line on my Verizon account with unlimited data.

I would like to use the Best Buy method to use an upgrade to get a new phone, but keep my unlimited data. How I understand it now is that I must go through Best Buy online, and purchase the phone and use the upgrade on my UDP line. I have the phone shipped to me, and DON'T turn it on.

The part I don't clearly understand is how to swap SIM cards in my situation. My old phone has a micro SIM, and my new phone has a nano. I have called verizon and asked them to send me a nano SIM card in the mail, which they have done. However they say that this nano SIM is blank, and once I get it I need to tie a device as well as an account to it. Once I have the new phone, my old phone, as well as the blank SIM, what steps do I take to get my UDP onto the new blank nano SIM card, which I can then place into the new phone before I turn it on.

The part I do not understand is how I link the blank SIM to my unlimited data account. I would be so appreciative and thankful for any help!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does it have to do with your plan then? It seems like the large majority of people can use Best Buy. I have the nationwide talk and text family plan 2000

You can simply cut you micro SIM down to nano size. Amazon sells SIM cutters for about $5.

Then when the new phone arrives take old SIM cut to the smaller size and install in new phone and make a call to any friend's number and you are all done.
