[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What is VAR? I can't figure out this lingo. Lol An update on My line w/ UDP, the upgrade was successful with UDP intact via the BBM and it still shows pending activation on the acct and hopefully will shed soon...need more minutes haha On a side note still have x100 Loyalty Bonus Minutes per month for another year. And the rep I talked to last month said once that runs out I can call back and ask for another Loyalty deal or promo for Minutes! So if you don't have this might be worth the call, unless your in the upgrade process...dont call till your pending activation falls off!!! Ha

VAR = Verizon Authorized Retailer. They are similar to a Verizon corporate store, but tend to care less about our plans. It usually costs money to get a new phone activated when compared to a regular store, but they also tend to hassle a lot less.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

sorry i forgot to mention that the new phone is a s5 and takes a micro sim....should i consider cutting the micro sim to fit the droid maxx?? also the dna has a nano sim in a micro adapter, this should fit in the s5, if so would there still be a need to go to a var??.
thanks!!

I think I understand. If I'm reading correctly, you currently have a S5 on the tiered line and a HTC DNA on the unlimited line. Try the following:

1.) Power off the DNA and remove its SIM
2.) Take the nano-SIM (i.e. remove it from the adapter) and put it in the Maxx
3.) Power on the Maxx so that it is now on the unlimited line

At this point wait an hour to give Verizon's system a chance to process your lines. After an hour, log into Verizon and confirm that they system is reading a Maxx on the unlimited line and the S5 on the tiered line. Assuming the system sees this, try the following:

1.) Select "Activate or Switch Device"
2.) Select the Maxx (i.e. you want the unlimited line)
3.) On the next page select "switch device" and then choose the other phone number in the drop down box
4.) Hit "Next" and then follow the rest of the directions

I'm not sure if the above will work, but it's worth a try. If you still can't get it through, it's perfectly safe to take the phones to Verizon (or call) since you do not have a pending activation on the account. I would leave the phones as just needing to be switched as that will be a very easy process for you and Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok this just made my night coming across this page as I thought I was going to have to pay full price for the galaxy s6 edge to keep my unlimited data plan! I recently went to bestbuy and was told all loop holes had been closed to preserve ULD plan. Last time I used the upgrade from a dummy line I had due to my wife losing her phone and never getting insurance. What I did was upgrade that line to the gs4 and was told to keep it on that line for 25 hours then switch the s4 to the udl line, reinstate the old dumb phone and cancel the data on the line which worked great but like I mentioned best buy said no go. Does that method still work or should I go a different route and shed that line all together? I just want to preserve the uld for as long as possible. Thank you for any and all advice! ! !

That process does not work anymore, but there is a similar one. What current phones do you have, what type of plans, and what is your upgrade situation? It sounds like you have at least 2 unlimited plans and a basic. Is there anything else? Which lines have upgrades?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello, I read the thread for past few days, and before i proceed with my upgrade, i just want to verify with you guys. Thanks for the help in advance!

L1: basic phone + no data plan // offered iphone 6 upgrade with extra $200 discount (currently suspended cause number owner is at overseas, but i can reactivate and do everything and resuspend.)
L2: LG g3 + udp // eligible for upgrade
L3: Samsung Galaxy S3 + udp // eligible for upgrade
L4: Samsung Galaxy S4 + udp // eligible for early edge upgrade (don't really know what this mean)

I am trying use L1's iphone upgrade to use it on L4.
so there are the steps that i need to take:
1. from vzw website, i place an order for iphone using L1's promotional upgrade (add data plan to upgrade)
2. once i get a phone at HOME, i take out sim that is in the iphone and turn of S4
3. go to vzw account page, then select activate or switch device option
4. when it shows me to type some number, type in iphone's sim card # and imei #
5. put new simcard back to the iphone, and turn it on
6. check call, data etc to make sure everything is working fine (but it should work just fine right?)

Another question is, i found that it may show that i have a pending activation later down the road,
when that shows up, what should i do?

Thank you very much,

You have the right idea to upgrading the S4 to an iPhone 6. Those directions are what I and others would recommend.

As for the pending activation, it will naturally fall off the account on its own. You just have to give it time to do so.

Line 1 UDP galaxy s4 upgrade available
Line 2 TDP iPhone 5c not available for upgrade yet
Line 3 basic line with no data plan. Available for upgrade 5/23

Transfer your line 1 upgrade to Line 2. You can do this with Verizon online or possibly Best Buy. You should only do this online. When you get the Phone activate it normally. You can then just swap the SIMs if they are the right size or transfer the phones around online.

Does the iPhone 5c have a SIM? If so are they the same as the s4 and s6? Also will that push back the upgrade date for line 2 after transferring line 1 update to it?

The S4 in micro. The iPhone and S6 are nano.
Line 1 will go under contract. Line 2's upgrade date will not change.

So that means there's no way to keep my UDP unless I pay full price for the phone?

No as you are missing what Mr. Toad said. You'll pay the subsidized price. Just do the following:

1.) Go to Verizon online and transfer your upgrade to the tiered plan (Line 2)
2.) Upgrade Line 2 using the the 2-year contract pricing of the phone and have it shipped home.
3.) When the S6 arrives, log into Verizon online and activate the phone following directions on Line 2 (the tiered line). You'll end up moving the SIM from the iPhone to the S6, but follow the directions.
4.) Wait at least an hour. Test the new phone to make sure it works.
5.) Power off the phone and take its SIM and put it back in the iPhone
6.) Power on the iPhone. Wait an hour to make sure it works.
7.) Take the S6 and the SIM the other nano SIM you have and activate the S6 on the unlimited line

Just follow these directions and you'll get a new smartphone on the unlimited line. You'll put the unlimited line back in a 2 year contract because that is where the upgrade originated from. Finally, you'll pay the 2-year contract price of the phone.

Really? That's great! 👍 I thought if I did anything what so ever to the UDL i would be forced to TDP especially renewing the contract?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just went through BB and ordered the Nexus 6. Just want to make sure I did everything correctly so far to keep UDP.

Line 1 - UDP upgrade eligible
Line 2 - UDP not eligible
Line 3 - dumb phone not eligible

I used the Line 1 upgrade on Line 3. When the phone arrives, remove SIM before phone is plugged in or turned on and insert the SIM from the phone on Line 2. Make no changes to the account until the message about waiting for activation has disappeared. If BB calls about the order, cancel it and try again. Am I missing anything?? Thanks

Also, Line 3 - dumb phone eligible on 5-18. Wanted to use for upgrade on Line - 1. Order phone on line 3 and just swap SIM from Line 1 to the new phone same as above?? Thanks

I am sorry but i have another question about this.
I talked to cus. serv. rep few days ago, and asked for activation fee wavier, and they can do it after i placed an order.
Today after i placed my order, i called and asked them to waive the fees for me.
service rep said, they have wait a whole billing cycle to waive the fees.

So in this case, i am trying to use the iphone on different number, and i am sure service rep will see this on the account,
what should be the wise way to get the activation fee off from my bill?
(I don't want them to tackle me with not activating device on L1)

As long as all the SIMs are the same size your plan will work. If they are different sizes, then you'll need to activate them using the IMEI and SIM numbers or take the new phone to a VAR.

Honestly, I have no idea as to how to avoid the activation fee. If you have a pending activation on your account, most likely Verizon will force the plan change through and cause the basic line to have a data plan.

they promised me to waive the activation fee. I might just ask them for a statement credit now. see what they say.
but! thanks duscocer10 for your help!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Greetings everyone. Let's jump right in. I have an upgrade available now on my udp. Here's the rundown,
Line 1 udp avail. Upgrade
Line 2 basic no upgrade
Line 3 basic no upgrade
so order phone from bestbuy using the udp upgrade. But don't use new sim card but rather my current sim card.
Or transfer my udp upgrade to a basic and then order phone receive it but don't use new sim card again.
The phone I'll be getting is an iPhone 6. My current phone is a s5. But here's my main question to all this. I will not be using the iPhone 6 but rather giving it to a friend who's on tmobile. Do I just order the iPhone 6 and not activate anything while destroying the sim card and just giving it to my friend. Or activate it using my sim card and then reactivation my s5 again. Please advise thank you.

Doesn't matter what you do as, in this case, activation is irrelevant. Just order the iPhone, remove SIM, and give to friend.

Thank you for all of you patience and help!! I was able to cut down the micro sim in the s5 and move it to the droid maxx and then move the nano sim in the htc dna and intall it in the s5 putting it on the udp line!!
For those who may be hesitant about going to COSTCO, it can be done you just need to be cautious about what you say and bail at the first sign of any reference to you losing your udp. this is exact what i did....
went in to Costco and told them that I would like to upgrade my tdp line (droidMaxx) and chose the s5. Asked if rep could transfer the upgrade from my line he responded yes
paid for the phone, he activated it on the tdp line (droidMaxx) and left the store. Made calls and sent text for a couple of hours.
I was unable to move the phones around to the desired lines on VERIZON web site. While reluctant to do so, I ended up cutting the sim cards and installed them into the proper phones so that the s5 ended up on the udp line.....SUCCESS!! no pending activation and I still have udp
again--thks!!
