[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Doesn't matter what you do as, in this case, activation is irrelevant. Just order the iPhone, remove SIM, and give to friend.

Dusoccer10 thank you for the quick response.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

An update on my situation. I just upgraded my wife (secondary line, UDP, was upgrade eligible) from an S3 to an iPhone 6 successfully through best buy. Just had to cut the sim to nano. I sanded it a little but I don't think any material was removed.

Well I thought people who are scared of this whole process would appreciate hearing a recent success story.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

New to this forum and would like quick advice in how best to keep my unlimited data plan. The following is the current situation:

Line 1:basic phone (no upgrade available)
Line 2:basic phone (upgrade available)
Line 3:htc one m8 UDP (upgrade available)

The new phone will either be the Galaxy s6 or iPhone 6. What is my best plan of action to keep my UDP?

I suggest you buy the S6 or iPhone 6 from BestBuy.com for home delivery.

When it arrives simply put your H8 nano SIM into the new device before you ever turn on the new device. There are no other activation steps to take. The SIM which comes with the new device should be treated as toxic waste. The new SIM can never be used and should be avoided once it arrives.

Be careful NOT to respond to any emails or phone calls you get from Best Buy (should you get any) about possible problems on your account.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here is my scenerio....My phone was lost stolen. I'm trying to keep my unlimited plan. My plan is currently:

Line 1: Galaxy S5 - Alltel Friends and Family Grandfathered Plan (UDP) (No upgrade available)

How can I keep my unlimited and get the same phone or a new one? Do I just do the insurance claim and get another phone?

This thread is really about using upgrades to keep an unlimited data plan.

With that said, if you have insurance, I would recommend filing a claim. If you do not, as long as you can get another phone that works on Verizon, it will not affect your unlimited plan.

You have two options, but they basically work the same way:

Option 1
1.) Order your new phone from Best Buy and have it shipped to home using the upgrade on the unlimited line (line 3)
2.) When the new phone arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Remove the SIM that comes with the new phone
4.) Insert the SIM from your m8 into the smartphone
5.) Now turn on the new smartphone and wait a couple of minutes for it to activate on its own

Option 2
1.) Order your new phone from Best Buy or Verizon and have it shipped to home using the upgrade on the basic line (line 2)
2.) When the new phone arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Remove the SIM that comes with the new phone
4.) Insert the SIM from your m8 into the smartphone
5.) Now turn on the new smartphone and wait a couple of minutes for it to activate on its own

Both options work and will allow you to upgrade to either the s6 or iPhone 6.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I asked a few weeks ago, and got some help, but still confused, and want to make sure I do this right

Line 1 Primary: Dumb Phone Upgrade Avail
Line 2: Iphone 5C TDP No Upgradge
Line 3 Mine: Note 3 UDP No Upgrade

I want to use Line 1's upgrade to get either the Nexus 6 or S6 Edge. Do I just upgrade with Line 1, then use my current SIM card in whatever phone I get?

I just want to make sure we don't accidentally change the plan and pay for by "upgrading" line 1 from a dumb to a smart

What phone you have on your unlimited line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a udp with one phone line that is due for an upgrade. Is it possible to use the upgrade with only one phone line and still keep the udp? If so how do I go about doing that?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So here is my situation.

L1: Note 3 UDP, no upgrade available
L2: Basic Phone, upgrade available
L3: Basic Phone, upgrade available
L4: Droid Razer TDP, no upgrade available

I want to upgrade L4 with L2s upgrade. what is the best way to do this. I tried to go into the Verizon store thinking i could just transfer my upgrade there and get a new phone since i was not messing with my UDP line, but they said if i upgraded any line I would have to restructure my contract to get rid of my UDP. I have used the best buy method in the past for my UDP line and it worked like a charm. Didn't know if it would be different since it is a different line without an upgrade on it. Any help would be great.

The standard best buy method.

1. Order online from best buy.
2. Choose keep existing plan. (it will say you will lose unlimited)
3. When you get the Phone do not turn it on. Discard the sim it comes with.
4. Put your unlimited sim into the phone.

Works best of you already have the right size SIM in the phone.

The rep is wrong. If you do directly upgrade that line you will be stuck paying for data on it.

You can do what I suggested on the previous post.
1. Order new phone from a third party retailer.
2. Choose 2gb plan.
3. When you get the Phone do not turn it on. Discard the sim.
4. Place your unlimited sim into phone.

This will not activate the data plan. I have heard it will work through Verizon but I don't know for sure.

So i buy the phone with my Basic line upgrade and choose a standard data plan. Then when i get the phone i put the SIM from my TDP line into the new phone and the Basic line stays basic?

Yes. You have to order online. You will be left with a pending activation on the basic line for up to a couple months. So make sure you don't have to swap the basic line phone anytime soon.

Yup. Upgrade through Best Buy, ship to home, and when you get the new phone, DO NOT POWER IT ON WITH THE NEW SIM CARD IN IT! Remove the SIM card that it comes with, destroy it so it cannot ever be used, insert your current active SIM card, and power on the phone. It will automatically activate, and you're good to go! Also, do not activate your phone on the website, and do not call Best Buy or Verizon. Your new phone will show up on your account very quickly, often within a minute or two.

It doesn't seem to matter what data option you choose during the ordering process. What you choose is tied to the new SIM card, which is never used. And if your current SIM card is the wrong size for your new phone, cut it or use an adapter, whichever is applicable.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

for my situation, do I just upgrade his phone through Best Buy, then just put my SIM in it?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I am in the process of upgrading my phone based off of the tips discussed in the thread, the last time I did this was 2 years ago and some of the loopholes have closed. I currently have

Line 1 UDP no upgrade
Line 2 UDP no upgrade
Line 3 TDP no upgrade
Line 4 Basic phone with upgrade

I went onto the BB website and ordered the S6 by transferring the line 4 upgrade to the line 3. I plan on switching the line 3 new phone to the line 1 phone when it arrives after I activate it on the line 3 for an hour. I just received a txt from BB stating that there was an issue with the mobile package order. has any one else had this issue?
**Update it was a BB computer issue they said it happens frequently

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a Note 3 currently

1.) Order your new phone from Best Buy or Verizon and have it shipped to home using the upgrade on the basic line
2.) When the new phone arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Log onto Verizon's website and select "activate or switch devices"
4.) Select your unlimited line
5.) Select "a device that has never been on the account before"
6.) Select use existing SIM
7.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the new phone
8.) Follow all remaining activation directions

By doing these 8 steps, you will get either the Nexus 6 or the S6 Edge on your unlimited line. This process does not cause you to pay for data on the basic line because the phone never actually gets activated on it.
