[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 5 lines:
Line 1: UDP, iPhone 6+, upgrade available
Line 2: UDP, iPhone 4s, upgrade available...want iPhone 6
Line 3: SDP: iphone 6+, upgrade available
Line 4: SDP: iphone 5, no upgrade
Line 5: dumb phone, no upgrade

Line 2 desperately needs an upgrade. I had understood that Lines 1 and 2 would lose their UDP if they used their upgrades, AND if they transferred their upgrades. So, we have not transferred Lines 1 and 2's upgrades to other phones wanting to be upgraded.

1st question: Is this true?..that we cannot transfer Lines 1 and 2's upgrades without losing UDP?
2nd question: What's the best way to upgrade Line 2, keeping its UDP, (from what I read, and has been mentioned many times, get the phone at Apple Store, activate it on one of the SDP lines, then switch the sims?

Thanks.

You can definitely transfer the upgrades from Lines 1 and 2 to Lines 3 and 4 without it affecting your UDP. You'll need to do it online through Best Buy or Verizon, but it can definitely be done. I don't think Apple stores or Apple.com has the ability to transfer upgrades, though I could be mistaken.

As for upgrading Line 2, the easiest way is the following:

1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon online, transfer the upgrade from Line 2 to Line 3 (or 4). Order the iPhone 6 and have it shipped to home.
2.) When the iPhone 6 arrives activate it on Line 3 (or 4) by going to Verizon online, selecting "activate or switch device" and following the directions
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure the new iPhone works as expected
4.) Power off the new 6
5.) Take the SIM out of the 6 and put it back in the original iPhone that was on the Line (in this case, but the SIM back in the 6+ so that it is working on Line 3; iPhone 5 if using Line 4)
6.) Log into Verizon online and select "activate or switch device"
7.) Select Line 2
8.) Select a phone that has been on the account before
9.) Select the new iPhone 6 and the unused nano-SIM card that you should have lying around (the one that shipped with the phone)

Finally, you just need to follow the rest of the directions and enjoy the new iPhone on Line 2.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ive got droid razr maxx, 2 galaxy s4's, and a s5. All my lines have unlimited and upgrades available and want note 4's or s6s

Who wants what? The Note 4's are easy and the s6's take a little bit more work. The Note 4's are just a basic SIM swap where you use the existing/active SIM in the old phone. The s6's require either cutting the old SIM or using IMEI/SIM numbers in Verizon online to activate. Look at how LarryDu laid out his Lines. Can you do the same thing, but just tell me what is the old phone on the line and what the end goal looks like? Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi everyone,

Here is my situation.

Nationwide Talk & Text Share 700 Plan
Line 1. Galaxy Note 2 - Unlimited Data (Upgrade Available)
Line 2. iPhone 4S - Verizon Max 6 GB Data (No Upgrade)
Line 3 Dumb Phone - No Data (Upgrade Available)

I don't use my phone much (since my work cell phone is a S6) but I would like to upgrade my phone before Verizon catches (or changes) this loophole we are all taking advantage of. I would like to upgrade the Galaxy Note 2 to Galaxy Note 4 Edge and the iPhone 4S to iPhone 6.

What method should I use? Can I do both at the same time or do I need to do one, then wait before I do the other?

You'll use two different methods to get what you want. You'll need to do them in the order I list them and I'll explain why at the end. First, we should upgrade Line 2 since this is a legal way of upgrading:

1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon online, transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 and order the iPhone 6. Have it shipped to home.
2.) When the iPhone 6 arrives just follow the activation instructions so that it now is on Line 2.
3.) Test the new phone to make sure it works the way you want it to work

It's important to do Line 2 first because if you are having problems with activation, it is safe to contact Verizon. Once you are satisfied with the iPhone on Line 2, let's upgrade Line 1:

1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon, upgrade Line 3 to a Note 4 edge and have the phone shipped to home
2.) When the Note 4 edge arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Remove the SIM card that comes with the Note 4 edge and destroy it
4.) Power off the Note 2 on Line 1
5.) Take the SIM card from the Note 2 and put it in the Note 4 edge
6.) Power on the Note 4 edge and wait for it to activate on Line 1

You'll have a pending activation on Line 3 for about a month, but it will eventually fall off on its own. You will not be able to make any plan changes or contact Verizon for any help during this time period. So, make sure everything is working the way you want it to be. This pending activation is why you should upgrade the unlimited line second.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1: 3G UDP Moto Droid (upgrade available)
Line2: 4g UDP Note 3 (upgrade not available).

Can I upgrade to an S6 to use on line2?

Yes. You have three different options and I strongly recommend ordering the phone through Best Buy online:

Option 1 (use existing SIM)
1.) Order the phone online through Best Buy and have it shipped to home using the upgrade on Line 1
2.) When the s6 arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it. Remove the SIM card that comes with the phone and destroy it.
3.) Power off the Note 3 and remove its SIM card
4.) Cut the SIM card to a nano-size
5.) Take the freshly cut SIM and put it in the s6.
6.) Turn on the s6 and wait for it to activate on Line 2

Option 2 (use IMEI and SIM numbers)
1.) Order the phone online through Best Buy and have it shipped to home using the upgrade on Line 1
2.) When the s6 arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it.
3.) Log into Verizon online and select "activate or switch device"
4.) Choose Line 2 (i.e. select the Note 3)
5.) Select "activate a device that has never been on the account before"
6.) Type in the IEMI and SIM numbers that came with the s6
7.) Follow the rest of the activation instructions to get the s6 on Line 2

Option 3 (use a VAR)
1.) Order the phone online through Best Buy and have it shipped to home using the upgrade on Line 1
2.) When the s6 arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it. Remove the SIM that came with the phone and destroy it
3.) Take the s6 to a VAR and pay them to activate the phone on Line 2

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks in advance for an answer, great service you're providing.

I have three lines:
Line 1: UDP Samsung Galaxy S4, upgrade available.
Line 2: TDP Samsung Galaxy S4, upgrade not available.
Line 3: No data, dumb phone, upgrade available.

I would like to upgrade my Galaxy S4 to a S6 Edge while keeping my UDP.

Easy enough:

1.) Through either Best Buy or Verizon online, transfer your upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 and order the S6 edge. Have the phone shipped to home
2.) When the S6 edge arrives, activate it on the tiered line for an hour or so. Make sure calls, texts, and data all work
3.) After an hour, power off the S6 edge
4.) Log onto Verizon online and go to "activate or switch devices"
5.) Select Line 2
6.) Reactivate the S4 that was on the line previously and follow all remaining activation instructions

Once that is done, we just need to activate the S6 edge on Line 1:

7.) Log onto Verizon online and go to "activate or switch devices"
8.) Select Line 1
9.) Activate the S6 edge and follow all remaining activation instructions

Is there a way I can manipulate the upgrade on my Line 3, no data, dumb phone, upgrade available?

Thanks so much again.

Can I throw a wrinkle into this scenario? Probably not a big deal, just curious...

Line 1 - iPhone 5, TDP, Upgrade Available
Line 2 - Galaxy S4, UDP, No Upgrade Available - Would like to get S6

Sounds pretty straight forward, just want to be sure before I pull the trigger for my wife.

Yours is slightly easier! Just take a trip with your wife to a Verizon store and do the following:

1.) Go to a Verizon store and upgrade Line 1 to the S6
2.) Before leaving the store, ask Verizon to activate the iPhone 5 on your wife's line
3.) Wait an hour and then power off both phones
4.) Swap SIMs cards and then turn on both phones

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Is there a way I can manipulate the upgrade on my Line 3, no data, dumb phone, upgrade available?

Thanks so much again.

1.) Upgrade Line 3 to the s6 edge and have it shipped to home. Order the phone from either Best Buy or Verizon
2.) When it arrives, log onto Verizon online
3.) Select "activate or switch device"
4.) Choose Line 1
5.) Select "activate a phone that has never been on the account before"
6.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the s6 edge
7.) Follow the rest of the directions for the activation

Going this way will give you a pending activation on Line 3 for about a month. So, no plan modifications can be done until it falls off.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all,
I have been trying to catch up on this thread as I have been sitting on a UDP plan for my wife and I for the last 22 months or so. Our upgrade for both our phones will become available in late September and I would like to be ready. Here's my scenario:

Line 1: LG G2, UDP, Upgrade available September 26th
Line 2: LG G2, UDP, Upgrade available September 26th

What I would like to do is upgrade both of these phones simultaneously to LG G4's (or maybe Note5's, not sure yet) and keep my UDP on both lines. Do I need to add two new lines to my account for the upgrades or what? I am still unclear even though I have read all of the posts about 20 pages back through this thread. Thanks in advance!

(Edit: fixed upgrade dates)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a scenario that I am sure has been covered before, but I just want to make sure I've got everything straight.

I have -

Line 1: Samsung GS5, UDP, upgrade available
Line 2: Samsung GS3, 2GBDP, no upgrade available.

I'd like to upgrade the GS5 (probably to a Note 5 when it comes out) then put the GS5 on the second line, in place of the GS3.

How would that work?

No problem as you have two different options

Using Best Buy (does not work with Verizon)
1.) Order the G4 that Line 1 wants using the upgrade on Line 1
2.) When the phone arrives do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Remove the SIM card that comes with the G4 and destroy it
4.) Take the SIM card from the G2 on Line 1 and put it in the G4
5.) Turn on the G4 to activate it on Line 1
6.) Repeat steps 1 through 5 just using Line 2 instead

Using Verizon (also works with Best Buy)
1.) Order the G4 that Line 1 wants using the upgrade on Line 2
2.) When the phone arrives do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Remove the SIM card that comes with the G4 and destroy it
4.) Take the SIM card from the G2 on Line 1 and put it in the G4
5.) Turn on the G4 to activate it on Line 1
6.) Repeat steps 1-5 with just changing the lines (i.e. upgrade Line 1 to the G4 that Line 2 wants)

Make sure to do these upgrades as two separate orders; however, they can be done back to back. You do not need to activate one G4 before doing the other upgrade.

I'd like to upgrade the GS5 (probably to a Note 5 when it comes out) then put the GS5 on the second line, in place of the GS3.

How would that work?

It ultimately will depend on the SIM size that the Note 5 comes with. However, the basics are:

1.) Transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 using either Best Buy or Verizon online. Order the Note 5 and have it shipped to home.
2.) When the Note 5 arrives, activate it on Line 2 following the directions that come with the phone
3.) Wait an hour to make sure it works

From here, it's just a matter of SIM sizes:

If both use Micro, just power off the phones and swap SIMs

If the S5 and Note 5 use different SIMs, then take both phones to a VAR

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, it sounds like you can retain UDP on Verizon simply by ordering the phone but not using the SIM card that comes with it. Because the newer phones GS6 and IP6 use a smaller SIM that the current phones on the market, simply swapping SIMs from Micro to Nano doesn't work - does it? Is there an option of cutting down the Micro to Nano size and still retain UDP as mentioned for Anakinnn above?

Thanks so much dusoccer10. I have one more concern though if you can please clarify for me...

When I order the phone as an upgrade, don't they re-up your contract for two years and force you to make all of the changes to your account at that moment of the upgrade? How do I place an order for the new phone using the upgrade and not make any account changes? I thought that was a forced issue just by the way the website operates... in either case of Best Buy or Verizon.

3.) Log into Verizon online and select "activate or switch device"

3.) Take the s6 to a VAR and pay them to activate the phone on Line 2
I will go option 1, do I upgrade directly through line 1 or should I transfer upgrade from line 1 to line 2 and then upgrade through line 2? Keep in mind that line one is currently 3G.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Anyone have Best Buy cancel their order? I got an email asking to call them ("Problem With Your Order "), I avoided doing so based on some of the posts I've seen. My Verizon plan changed from month to month with an upgrade available to as if i got the upgrade (not available for another 2 years). Should I expect it to reset on its own or should I call Verizon? If I do get the upgrade back, is it worth trying again with BB or am I out of luck?

Thank you.

When you complete the order, it does put you in a two year contract. However, it does not force the plan change until you activate the new phone. It's tied to the SIM card that comes with the G4. However, you bypass this by using your old SIM.

Yup. Just buy a SIM cutter from Amazon and you can cut your micro down to a nano.

With that said, I would just use the steps I gave you. That way you don't have to worry about screwing up the cut.

Just upgrade through Line 1. There is no need to transfer. Plus, if you did, options 2 and 3 would cause you to lose unlimited.
