[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What do you mean "nothing should happen"? Can you elaborate a little?
When doing this, it's all a gamble. Roll the dice at your own risk and hope you keep the unlimited. But there is always the chance you get caught.

I get that. I'm just not sure what screen I'm supposed to be seeing to know whether the "trick" was successful or not. I posed a series of questions, none of which were answered or mentioned so not sure how else I can find out whether I'm going down the right path

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

what was the number they gave you to call? I've been working for close to a year trying to get my UDP plan reinstated for a change of plan that was admittedly an error on VZWs part.

I had initiated ordered a phone from Bestbuy (never even powered it on), but then I bought a phone from craigslist and when VZW activated it my plan got switched like I had activated the phone I had shipped from Best Buy. Even after BB accepted the unactivated phone for return VZW wouldn't undo the rate plan change. The CSRs I've been talking to have been great, and set the contract back to month-by-month after they saw the error, the they can't make the rate change, but they can't fix rate issue. I was wondering if the number you received was different from the one I have. Thanks.

How many tiers have you gone to/through? Did you ask for a manager? A year sounds too long for them to be able to do anything. Most of the time when this happens it has too be within a day or a month at the most... good luck I would keep fighting also especially if it wasn't my mistake

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Another question or note, I tried to transfer my UDP upgrade to a second TDP line that is not upgrade eligible. This time, when I added a new phone to the cart and tried to checkout, I got a message saying

"purchase of this smartphone (Thus the new phone) requires a data plan minimum of $30/month for the length of the service contract term or you can move to our new MORE everything pricing."

and then it gives me a check box to click "I agree" before continuing. Is this the normal screen I am supposed to be seeing, or the "nothing should happen" screen? If I click "agree", is that trying to change the UDP line's data plan or just confirming that the TDP line I am upgrading from requires a minimum $30 data plan?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sorry for reasking the question, but just trying to get a deal before the new "no discounted phones" hits Verizon. I was originally planning on getting a Note 4 around Black Friday, but doesn't look like I'll have any type of discount on it at that time.

line 1 - GS4 UDP no upgrade
line 2 - GS5 UDP upgrade available
line 3 - LG2 "dumb phone" no upgrade

I was going to use the Best Buy method, but it doesn't wanna let me sign in. So I'm trying to do the upgrade through Verizon. I want to upgrade line 1 to a Note 4 and keep UDP on it.
My plan was to switch the upgrade from line 2 (UDP) to the line 3, upgrade that to the Note 4. I need to add a data plan to the dumb phone for $30/month, for now. As soon as it comes in, put in the SIM of line 1 and wait for it to activate. Wasn't sure if I have the steps right? Can I just transfer the upgrade to line 1, get the Note 4 and plug in old SIM into it when it gets in? Thanks for the clarification.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Again, many, many thanks!
1) Yeah, guarantee was the wrong word for sure. Understood.
2) Gotcha, that's what I thought.
3) What causes it to "fall off the line?" Can changes be made after it "falls off?"
4) OK, got it, assuming they continue the "upgrades" process
5) OK, got it.
6) OK....
6a) So, even if I don't activate a New Phone, the ESN is tied to my account and linked to my "contract" for two more years? But then how does the ESN/phone get applied to someone else's account?
6b) Hypothetically, if we were to switch to AT&T (no intention at this time, just thinking worst case), it would remain a clean ESN as long as we paid any account closing fees with Verizon?
6c) Does New Phone 1 get listed as Line 1 device even if I don't "activate" it? I'm a little confused on the approach for selling one of them...
7) Will ordering a new phone using the upgrades as prescribed initiate a new 2yr contract? IOW, will this reset "early termination fees?"

P.S. You're awesome.

1.) No one knows why the pending activation falls off after about a month. It just does. Once the pending activation is gone, you are free to make plan changes.
2.) The ESN is only linked to the account for contract payment. Verizon does not actually care what phone is being used at any given time. That's why phone activation is linked to the SIM and not ESN.
3.) A phone's ESN remains clean until the phone has been paid off. With 2-year contracts, that means at the end of 2 years the phone will forever have a clean ESN. Until then, the ESN is linked to the contract. If you buy a full price phone from Verizon, that ESN will always be clean. If you use an installment plan through Verizon, the ESN will be linked to the payments.
4.) A phone can be used on another account by putting a SIM linked to that account in it. However, it is never fully clean until the original purchaser has fulfilled his or her obligation to Verizon. This is the risk a buyer must take when purchasing used phones.
5.) If you leave Verizon, as long as you pay the ETF, the phone will have a clean ESN. If you don't pay, the phone will be blacklisted.
6.) After you use an upgrade, logging into Verizon will still only show the phone that has the current active SIM in it. If you never activate the new smartphone, it will never show up where you can see it. Verizon has other systems to track ESN status of phones that people have bought.
7.) Once you use an upgrade, that Line will have a new two year contract. Additionally, it will reset the ETF.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks dusoccer10 for the help. I made an error when I listed my situation and my children changed which phones they wanted.

line 1 has an samsung s5, udp and is upgrade eligible, month to month. on vzw site it says transfer upgrade
line 2 has a flip phone and no plan or upgrade
line 3 has an iphone 4,udp and is upgrade eligible, month to month. on vzw site it says transfer upgrade
line 4 has an iphone 5s,udp and is no upgrade.
I underlined and bolded the changes.
Both my kids want iphone 6. so iwant to get 2 iphone 6 one for line 3 and one for line 4 without losing my UDP. How do I proceed?
Thanks for your help

There is not a lot of difference in the steps needed to be done. The hard part is the 3G phone on Line 3. The good news is that everything can still be done, however, Line 3 will get stuck with the 5s for about a week as you'll need to go one line at a time. Just do the following:

1.) Order an iPhone 6 through Best Buy using the upgrade on Line 1. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, destroy the SIM card that is shipped with it.
3.) Power off the iPhone 5s on Line 4 and remove its SIM card
4.) Take the SIM card from the 5s and put it in the 6. Power on the 6 and wait for it to activate on Line 4.

This will now put an iPhone 6 on Line 4. The next step is to upgrade Line 3 to a LTE phone. Just take the 5s to a VAR and have them activate the phone on Line 3. Once the 5s is activated on Line 3, you are all set to upgrade that line to a new phone:

1.) Order an iPhone 6 through Best Buy using the upgrade on Line 3. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the phone arrives, destroy the SIM card that is shipped with it.
3.) Power off the iPhone 5s on Line 3 and remove its SIM card
4.) Take the SIM card from the 5s and put it in the 6. Power on the 6 and wait for it to activate on Line 3.

That's normal. The message is indicating that the line being upgraded must have at least a $30 a month charge for the length of the service. It's not trying to change the UDP. You would get the same message if you never transferred the upgrade to begin with or if the upgrade originated on the tiered line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks duosoccer.
I'm guessing separate transactions for the two phones. How long do I have to wait between ordering the two phones? or can I do it in one transaction? I am getting a nanosim card from verizon for the line 3 account by using the 5s for an hour or 2 on line 3 and then moving the 5s back to line 4.

Thanks duosoccer. I proceeded as if I were upgrading and wondered is it also normal that up until I finalize the order/confirm my purchase, it doesn't tell me the plan details? For instance, I expected to see something like "Data Plan: 2 GB/month" or something, just confirming the data plan I am using along with the phone (for the TDP line).

One other question: How does the Best Buy method work? I wanted to transfer the UDP upgrade to the TDP line and purchase from BestBuy since they are selling the phone cheaper than VZW online but whenever I transfer on Verizon's site and then log in to BB, BB says the TDP line is not upgrade eligible until a later date. Would I have to upgrade my UDP line directly then destroy SIM phone ships with before inserting my current SIM? I pretended to upgrade my UDP line I didn't see any option (up until clicking checkout) about "keep existing plan" or "choose new data plan" and only that the charges for the new phone will be added to my current bill. Wondering if that is normal via the BB method. Thanks again.

You definitely need to do two separate transactions. If you try to combing them, there is a good chance you'll be moved into a More Everything plan and that will mess up your entire account.

As far as how fast can you order the phones, you really need to follow the directions listed. You should not be using the upgrade on Line 3 until you have already moved the 5s onto that Line. Hypothetically, if you wanted to order both phones, you would need to move the upgrade from Line 3 to the basic line. If you went this route, you would do the following:

1.) Use the upgrade on Line 1 to order an iPhone 6 from Best Buy and have the phone shipped to home.
2.) After you purchased the first phone, through Best Buy, transfer the upgrade from Line 3 to Line 2 and order the iPhone 6. Have the phone shipped to home.
3.) When both phones arrives, immediately remove the SIM cards that are shipped with and destroy them.
4.) Power off the 5s on Line 4 and remove its SIM
5.) Put the SIM from the 5s into one of the 6's. Power on that iPhone 6 and give it a few minutes to activate.
6.) Test the new phone and make sure it works as expected
7.) After at least an hour, drive to a VAR with the 5s (should be SIM-less) and have it activated on Line 3.
8.) Wait at least an hour and then power off the 5s on Line 3
9.) Remove the SIM card from the 5s and put it in the other iPhone 6. Power on the iPhone 6 and give it a couple of minutes to activate.

Yeah, that's fairly normal for Verizon's online ordering system.

As for Best Buy, you have a couple of options. The original Best Buy method was just using the upgrade on the unlimited line, destroying the SIM that shipped with the phone, and using the already active SIM that is linked to the account. You could definitely go this route.

The other way to use Best Buy is to transfer the upgrade to the tiered line through their system. Transferring the upgrade through Verizon's system doesn't stick. In other words, once you leave Verizon, your upgrade returns to its original line. In the past, Best Buy would allow you transfer the upgrade in its system. However, that has become very hit or miss. Cruzmike89 was able to do it a day or so ago, by doing the following:

1.) Go to https://www-ssl.bestbuy.com/site/ol...wNw-PGvbkfWcFLLeNF1serv0gg#connect-to-account
2.) Put in the phone number that has the upgrade on it
3.) Select a phone and then check eligibility again
4.) The next page will say that you can upgrade but don't do that. On the same page on the mid right it will say something about trying a different number. Click on that.
5.) It will take you to a new page and that's where you put the number that has no upgrade available.
6.) The next page will say you can't upgrade but you can transfer your upgrade. In the scroll area pick your number with the upgrade and continue to transfer.
7.) Finish your checkout.

OK Thanks. I clicked on the link and was able to transfer the upgrade from UDP to a second TDP by following your steps. Still didn't see any mention of "Keep Existing Plan" or anything like that although I DID see when I first logged into BB's system using the UDP number that there was a message saying something like "Verizon no longer allows unlimited data plans for the line you selected. You will be automatically changed to a default 2 GB plan" (again, not exact wording or something like that)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The only problem I can see for us UDP Upgarders is that Verizon won't have its Third Party Retailers allow 2 year contracts, thus making us go to them after "considering alternatives"(though the Verizon site works for UDP upgrades) and then limiting our Upgrade path. :/

Don't worry about it. I didn't see it ether. But I found out if you remove the phone from the cart the keep existing plan shows up. So it's there but hidden. You will see at final check out.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Looking to help a friend upgrade and keep his UDP, here's her scenario:

Line 1 - iphone4s - UDP (Upgrade available)
Line 2 - iphone4s - TDP (No Upgrade available)

Line 1 wants a new phone. Here are my questions:
What is the best method to use for this situation for the upgrade? BB or VZW? (price is a secondary issue, the most reliable method for keeping UDP is top priority)
Does it matter if she switches to another iphone or crosses over to android?
Should I get a sim card cutter?
