[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The BB Method seems to be the culprit. Using the 4ever method wouldn't necessitate the destruction of the SIM that ships with the phone. The thought is that the device IMEI may now be linked to the UDP in some way under the system upgrade that took place last night (as I understand it anyway, but I may be misinterpreting a bit). No word yet on whether throwing a non-UDP Verizon SIM in the phone has the same affect.

With that being said (and I do not hold u accountable) up to this point the 4ever method was to indeed activate the new sim received and udp was not lost, even when conducted through best buy? I have the phone just sitting here and am trying to decide what to do?

Thank You

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You're welcome. If you indeed used the 4ever method you may be okay. No one has yet reported an issue with anything but the BB Method. I would hold off on selling the phone for now if that was your intention however and would definitely recommend your reading the first and last few pages of the Slickdeals thread.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I cannot post links because I have less than 10 posts on Android Central. But everyone should check out the Slickdeals thread on this subject.

Several people have lost their UDP's today, likely the result of the change to Verizon's systems last night. Suggestion is to NOT use the SIM from your UDP in the subsidized device until further information is obtained.
I think I might fall victim to this... But I inserted my SIM before today's date... Any word of advice? Paranoia, Paranoia everything's coming to get me...

I am not an expert on the subject unfortunately, just a messenger so I don't want to advise anyone one way or another. I can tell you that like yourself I activated my device as suggested using the SIM from the line I ordered from, in this case my UDP SIM and did so several days ago after which I removed the SIM and placed it back into the device I borrowed it from. I have not experienced any issues (knock on wood) but I will not be putting that SIM back into the subsidized device until further information is obtained.

I have no intention of selling. I will read through the posts again (for like the 100 time.lol) The only concern I have is I did the 4ever method through best buy online not Verizon online. Under My Verizon it says

"Pending Upgrade for R____H____ ___my # udp" "Complete Activation"

I am afraid that hitting complete activation will kill my udp but I transferred the upgrade?
I know you may not have the answers just trying to get my current situation out there. I would rather send the phone back and pay the $20 extra then loose unlimited.

Thank You again!

Wish I knew what to tell you. JulesJam over on the Slickdeals thread is the expert and at this point is trying to get answers to what is going on. Who knows, all of this could be system glitches associated with the changes Verizon made last night. I guess my best advice would be not to panic if you are still within the buyer's remorse window, and to keep up with the Slickdeals thread.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you, not really in a panic and no remorse just want to return before 14days if it is more then likely that I will loose udp. Much prefer the $20 hike then loose udp. so I guess I will sit on it for a day or two more and hope vzw does not pull the rug from under me. There was no mention on BB about loosing unlimited with the transfer.

I don't really recall seeing it myself but JulesJam said it is there as you are going through the ordering process.

I'm over on slick with JulesJam he says that it may have to do with my contract renewal date and considering that my two years hasn't changed yet maybe has something to do with it. I think I still have a Pending Activation Order...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Reporting back... UDP was kept successfully using the BBM. Big thanks to dusoccer and everyone else on this forum for providing such useful information.

However, the iPhone 6s that I received from Best Buy, the touch screen doesn't work very well. Does anyone know if it's safe to go to the store to return and exchange for a new phone?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I did the BB method with 2 lines. Once I received the new phones I destroyed the new SIM cards. I haven't even powered on the new phones. One is just for a backup and the other is a Christmas present for my daughter. I just checked my Verizon account online and it still shows unlimited data on both lines that I upgraded. :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The way it looks right now, with limited info., is that once the phone you ordered is activated on the line used for the upgrade (using your old SIM), the IMEI is transmitted to Verizon, the activation takes hold and you lose your UDP. What is unknown at this time is whether activating the phone with another SIM (using L1's SIM in L2 and vice versa) is an effective way to avoid the UDP loss. There has been at least one report of someone losing their UDP following a device firmware update (was either a G3 or G4 and again was likely due to an IMEI transmittal following the update process). All of these losses occurred yesterday after Verizon's system update and not prior.

Best advice is to leave the phones untouched for the time being and follow the thread over on Slickdeals.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Transfers within Verizon work..

Well both my phones are no working and it looks like lost my UDP. I did not use the SIM in the new phone at all. Switched my old sim into the new phone last night start setting it up and this morning nothing is working....

VZW chat is stating I made a change this morning when I tried to "activate" my new device.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

That is not the first step of the Best Buy Method.

Yes I know I am wrong but I thought that was the first step so I'm asking you what is the first step? I'm not being a wise guy and this entire discussion may be moot now but I want to understand. The reason is I would prefer to do the entire process in vzw if it works, extends udp, and allows me to buy a subsidized phone. Is there a "VZW Method" thread to explain this? I am not being contentious. I know virtually nothing about this and I acknowledge that. I just want to understand. At first people seemed to contest what you said then they agreed so I am utterly lost.

Apparently the BB method is in doubt now so maybe this "VZW method" works?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So you transferred the upgrade but never ordered a new phone and that let you extend contract and keep udp? I'm not questioning anything you say but I don't think I am following you correctly. As for your previous posts I probably read them but I never remember user names so after reading a 100 posts I forget who is who. I was under the impression that once you transferred the upgrade to tdp you had to buy a subsidized phone from a third party like bb or apple to keep udp and get new phone. Are you saying I can buy a subsidized phone from vzw online after upgrade transfer then discard sim, switch sim with current tdp phone...use for an hour....then take out sim and put in sim from udp line and you have a new subsidized phone kept udp and never dealt with anybody but vzw?

More than likely a misunderstanding, does get confusing on here. I transferred my moms upgrade to brothers TDP line and ordered a GS5 for her. I bought the subsidized phone straight through VZW as I did before on my own UDP line last year. I got my family together, trashed the sim that came in the GS5 and put my brothers sim into it activated it, played around on it for like 10 minutes then put my moms sim in, she reset the phone and she has been using the phone since then, I think last Wednesday. I just text her to check her "My Verizon" and she says it still says UDP, I logged on to the account and mine and her lines still show UDP. I just did it all on VZW without talking to anyone.

Speculation is that the IMEI is tied to the switch order. When you used the SIM from your UDP line (the line from which you placed the upgrade order) within the phone last night (subsequent to Verizon's system change) and turned it on for the first time you sent an activation request that was immediately completed and you were kicked off of your UDP.

If you are still within the window of your 14 day buyer's remorse period:

1) You MUST return the phone to Best Buy (or wherever you bought it) and get your upgrade restored and contract reversed; and
2) You MUST file an inactive pricing request (IPR) thru Verizon.

This should get you your UDP back at the newly increased cost of course.

Follow the thread over on Slickdeals for more info as it is gathered.
