IPhone 5: Yay or Nay?

Just tap the phones back to back

This works with Android Beam as well. You just have to both be equipped for it.

for $300? You could buy a nexus 7 and an old iPod

It starts at $299 with 32GB storage. Don't think that's too unreasonable considering what Samsung is charging for their shoddy Galaxy Players.

The 4th gen iPod touches ($199 for 16GB) + an 8GB Nexus 7 ($199) is significantly more expensive, so I'm not sure where you're deriving this conclusion from.

Nexus 7 doesn't factor in. Anyone considering getting an iTouch PMP is not going to bend over backwards to carry a pretty barebones 7" tablet just cause it's $50 cheaper with half the internal storage, no back camera and a worse FFC running an OS with a media ecosystem (this IS a PMP) that is 10x worse than Apple's - and no decent Media Synching Apps.

The old iPod Touch starts at $199 for 16GB and $249 for 32GB. If you're going to pay that much for a 32GB iTouch 4th Gen, you're better off just getting the new one for $299 with 5x better hardware/capabilities and the same storage capacity. The new iTouch should have been the star of the announcements, IMO. It's an incredible upgrade both in design and internally.

Was huge for me especially gps in s3 way better than s2,battery life Omg way better, screen much better to me. Games super fliud, the phone way faster, camera way better, overall look better to me, I love wifi direct when me and friends in a party snapping pics... S3 big upgrade

The fact that the GPS was buggy or you got bad battery life doesn't make it any more of an upgrade (Sprint being pretty bad at updates, I feel for you). The S2 had AGPS and if you weren't on Sprint you'd have gotten great battery life - in fact the S2 was raved about all over the interwebs for its great battery life, was it not? In fact, the Sprint variant was one of the top performers. My Skyrocket's GPS is flawless and it's running a stock 4.0.4 ROM. The only difference between my phone and the S3:

S3 Camera is somewhat better
S3 has updated TouchWiz/Software
S3 has higher Screen Resolution/Bigger Screen
S3 updated the SoC (doh)
S3 has more RAM (not that it's needed)

Apple did all of that with the iPhone 5 (well the updated RAM is a US thing for the GS3). It's basically what all the manufacturers do. They make modest improvements and market it as the best thing ever, and make it look like it's such a huge upgrade. Samsung's flagship only looked like a huge leap because they used such a low res panel on the GS2.

WiFi Direct are you serious? The 1st Gen Galaxy S was the first WiFi-Direct certified smartphone. You're a bit late in mentioning that one.

The S3 was no huge upgrade. It was quite a modest upgrade, just well-marketed. Samsung is just the Apple of the Android ecosystem.

Sniff sniff do I smell an apple whore lol. I found solo many faults in this I can't even comment on them all but I can say this NFC is still taking off well here in Chicago at least two new stores started accepting NFC lol appleheads BTW the sgs3 is one of the best phones out today goofball stop hating

I don't own any Apple products. I owned an iTouch, which I sold after 4-5 months of owning it. However, I have owned 6 Android devices, 2 Blackberries, 1 Windows Phone, and a Windows Mobile device (HD2) within the last 2 years.

iPhone? Never owned one.

NFC is near useless here because Google has tied down Wallet to one carrier and the general consumer is not going to hack their phone to get it on there. AT&T etc. have locked down the Secure Element in their branded devices until they are ready to deploy Isis. Passbook will probably be supported at a far higher rate than Wallet, and due to the nature of its implementation it will likely prove to be more useful as well.

Watch your mouth.

Funny how u say this is a carbon copy of iOS. So Samsung must have a time machine to go to the future and copy iOS 6. Most of the ios6 feature have been in android for years. Who is copying who.

Only reason they will sell a ton is cause apple has all the isheep brainwashed.

Retina isn't a technology just something apple throws out to make it sound special. And I wouldn't want to use it on such a small screen.

And iOS is so limited . Android is much more open and customizable. Also funny how apple was saying only the iPhone can talk and surf the web at the same time. When android already could. And iPhone 5 won't have that. And will prob have it on the iPhone 5s and say they invented it and its the best thing.

Apple copies more and gets away with it. Must be paying some off. Weird how apple wins all the cases in the us(always the same judge, something fishy there). But looses most of the cases in other countries.

I said some features are carbon copies of iOS features, and gave SVoice as an example. Did you even read my post, are does anger cloud your judgement THAT much? I thought it was common knowledge that Samsung went out of their way to copy Apple. I mean, I own a Samsung Galaxy device myself, but that doesn't mean blind favortism was part of my contract...

EDIT: To the person upthread (no one actually answers questions just argues it seems):

WiFi Direct works similar to BT, except it's a ton faster and has a longer [usable] range. You basically connect (pair) two WiFi direct devices together similar to the way you would if you were doing a BT File Transfer and transfer files over the faster connection. It's generally almost always faster than BT since there are still a lot of older devices out there and even devices with WiFi-Direct may only have BT 2.1+EDR in lieu of BT 3 or 4 + HS (or they may have BT 3 but not have the HS Profile).

SBeam works by pairing over NFC and making transfers over WiFi Direct.

You cannot use WiFi direct if you are connected to a WiFi hotspot (similar to WiFi tethering).

n8ter what's your point with the SIII then? It's a great phone, bashing it or saying it's a mediocre upgrade in the SIII discussion area here on A.C. proves what? You're either a glutton for punishment or a moron who's bored?!

Yes the I5 is a nice phone but it's not going to make me sell my SIII. If you think it's a great phone run right out to your nearest Apple store and pick one up and let us know how great it is.....

He's already doing that without having the phone. His opinion has already lost credit.

And yet everyone did the same about the s3 before it was out as well. My s3 shows all similar problems that my s2 (which I owned on TWO DIFF carreiers) as well and also the same for the og. Samsung couldnr get there sh** straight after the third attempt so I will be gladly getting rid of it. I'm tired of the crappy connectivity issues that's plagued the galaxy series with Samsung. Luckily I don't pay for any of the phones I get for work. Otherwise I'd be pissed off if I bought the s3 or s2s with my money. I can say I'm happy with my htc EVO lte.

So bashing the iPhone 5 saying its a piece of crap does what? If u cant see that pretty much all phone makers do the same thing with modest upgrades and marketing it as the newest greatest thing then u are more blind than the isheep

We're not discussing companies going head to head in marketing tactics here. We're talking about some goof who's trolling because someone posted the topic on whether SIII owners are impressed with the I5, a majority said no way. Pure and simple...

And who's bashing the I5? I already said it's a nice phone, but I'm not going to drop my SIII for it.

Never had an iPhone and never will. Always have been a DROID fan because of the level of customization it offers. Now I have an S3. This phone RULES!!!

Quote me where I said mediocre, nor did I bash the phone.

I said modest.

That word does not appear in any of my posts.

And isn't everyone here bashing the iPhone?

Don't put words in my mouth, though. Modest != Mediocre.

P.S. Feel free to quote me, so I can clear up any obvious misunderstandings.

Yeah there's always that one person who thinks they know better than everyone else. Guess we're all a bunch of morons because we bought an SIII, went over the specs on the I5 and said to ourselves "wait my SIII already has all this stuff"....

Actually the sgs3 hell even my ns4g has more features than the 2012 iphone lol and my phone is almost 2 years old haha

Most people here will say they're satisfied. Most people here aren't ready to shell out $649 (at the minimum) for another phone off-contract, or add a line just to get a different phone. Anyone with a GS3 either is on contract, or isn't and will pay at minimum $200 to get locked into one if they want an i5.

I asked a simple question that really had nothing to do with whether the phone was great or not. I wanted to know what people found revolutionary about the GS3 (particularly compared to the S2), because a lot of opinions about the iP5 is that it is only a modest upgrade (it is compared to the 4S vs. the 4). The GS3 was no different. Samsung and Apple both seem to check the same bullet points when they release a new flagship phone. I want to know why people always think an Android phone is anything but a modest upgrade (they almost always are, since the manufacturers release so many incremental upgrades after their flagships i.e. Skyrocket after GS2, I'm sure another GS3 variant will come sooner or later), yet the iPhone is viewed in that light.

I don't have an iPhone and don't want one. I always get iTouches instead.

Maybe I was looking for opinions cause I've been eying a GS3, but your hostilities could not be contained... You have no clue.

My contract with Rogers is up next August, for me the choice might come down to the new Nexus and the Galaxy S4. Time will tell which I choose.. (or will a 3rd company win me over like HTC, Motorola or Sony???) The beauty of Android is there are plenty of choices. It'll be a huge change for me since i've basically had the same phone since 2008 (first iPhone 3G and then iPhone 4)

If you are talking about software features, perhaps.

If you're talking about hardware features, then I'd like to know which parts you're considering, and how. In either case it doesn't matter since that phone is way past it's to sell date and you mind as well compare an Epic 4G since that phone actually would fair better than a Nexus S, IMO.

Google crippled the Nexus S in a few ways compared to the other Galaxy S devices (SD Card, Camera Quality, etc.).

The nexus s is crippled how???? I have jb what other phone that came out when this one did has jb ota???? Exactly what other 2 yo phone has NFC??? My ns4g is truthfully the only reason I don't have a sgs3 RIGHT NOW besides Chicago don't have lte yet but soon.

Ya I don't see how ppl complain about apples minimal upgrades but yet when a new android phone comes out with minimal upgrades everybody jumps on it like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It's not so much whether or not the S3 was a monumental upgrade. I think the point, is that Android is a year ahead of Apple with most tech. That doesn't mean they are better because some people don't care about that. ANDROID in general, makes a couple pretty big steps every year and iPhone did not. All Apple is doing now, is trying to keep up with Android. The only reason people take issue with that on these forums, is because Apple turns around and says they are the industry standard. Apple CLEARLY is not better than anyone else overall, yet no one is good enough unless they own an iPhone and are part of the discipleship.

It's AWESOME if people buy millions of iPhone 5's. I really don't care either way. I just wish Apple would show Android a little more respect by not lying in their presentations (thinnest smartphone in the world????). If Apple was still ahead of Android like they were in 07-09 then I could understand them being a little pompous. But clearly Android has shot past them at mach speed and Apple needs to put the bragging on the back burner until they get back into the innovation theme.

Again, I would not say one negative thing about Apple if they would just do their thing and stop claiming that they are "changing the game". Samsung never said the S3 was a game changer or that it was the new industry standard. They said "The next big thing is here". And it was a big thing. Your points would be more credible IF Samsung made the same claims that Apple does.

Apple is still ahead of Android. It's funny how ppl throw in all the free crap Android phones you can get when you sign a new contract and say" See, Android sells more phones than Apple!". Of course they would gain the market Shari if every carrier has at least 5 free Android phones they offer. Most ppl look for the free phone to upgrade too. For example, my parents. They don't are who made the phone. The iPhone 5 will sell millions. I had an G3 and sold it after 2 weeks. They both have weaknesses. I like Apple because when they announce a new product, they don't change the launch date and crap like that. With the SG3 launch, no one had a clear date. It kept changing. Why can't the other makers follow Apple on the that stuff. Apple sets a preorder date and a launch date and that date is set in stone.

To me, it seems like some of you guys act like a guy is high school. You are all pissed at Robert because he gets all the girls and attention while you go own crying about how much better you look than Robert and how you should be getting more girls. Mean while, Robert is going on date after date and everyone like him.
