Is Sprint losing its signal strength lately?

Anyone try flashing the EE03 modem from Gingerbread? I know a few people have done it already and I can confirm a better 4g connection where I wasn't getting barely any in the past.

EE03 Modem is in the thread below, flash with Odin.

[ROM][ACS][STOCK] "Swiss Cheese Samsprint" EE03 :: GPS/GTalk voice/video fix! :: 5/16

I noticed no differece. 4g disconnected 5 times in a short 2 mile trip to mcdonnalds and back. Data seems to be a bit more eradic. I've even had the modem completely crash. While a lot think ee05 is afnal release, I can tell you that if it is, many epic owners will be leaving. There is no reason I should have to toggle speakerphone and bluetooth during a call while I'm driving.

I had the same result flashing the EE03 modem with SRF. Very unstable 3G and 4G as well. I went back to the EB13 modem whis is not great but better for me than EC05 or EE03.

It seems that Sprint's coverage isn't what it used to be as I used to get good signal strength all over the Chicago suburbs.

I hear ya Ed, suburbs of Chicago here ;) Although I have had decent usage from the new modem. My problem has been less coverage from WI FI. That isn't modem related as far as I know.

@Andrew, EE03 is a very good build but it still isn't done. If that is the improvement Sprint/Sammy were able to make over a months time from ED12 to EE03 then then next build/final release should be pretty good because they actually did something RIGHT for a change in a months time :D

Its not going to be ready anytime soon. I get lots of crashes and it is god awful slow. I've removed as much bloat as I can think of (all touchwiz stuff, sprint apps) and it hasn't helped much. Widgets constantly reflash on the screen, painfully slow decisions from inputs. I have little faith. Been looking to switch to verizon for service problems I've been having with Sprint. I don't like 1x speed, why am I paying a $10 premium to spend half my time there? It was definitely an improvement over ED12, but considering ED12 rendered my phone completely useless after 15 hours of use, it isn't saying much. There are problems with bluetooth on all the GB based roms (cyanogen/ED12/EE03) and I'm tired of syncing my phone to my car constantly.

Sprint must have done something, at least here, because my signal has been noticably stronger. Maybe because I called in and said something. The guy I talked to sounded like a real tech, even mentioning that he can't wait to get back in the field. Coulda been BS but he skipped the entire blame-the-handset routine unlike every other rep I've ever contacted.

I agree, recently my 4G has gradually become stronger. My 3G however is in and out.

I went with Sprint because I could get more service for less money than on Verizon, and because Sprint just recently put 3G coverage in where I live. It's been quite decent so far.

I still consider it to be less service for less money compared to Verizon. But for me personally it's a little less service for a lot less money.

Unlimited data/web, Verizon recently upgraded to that. Unlimited text messages, extra cost on Verizon. Unlimited calls to and from any other cellphone on any other network. Not on Verizon you don't. Unlimited nights for calls to and from landlines starts at 7 PM on sprint VS 9 PM on Verizon.

I'd call that "more" on sprint.

P.S. Here I was talking up how Sprint recently got 3G here and a few minutes after posting my Epic makes a beepy sound, no alert light flashing... I check and *gasp* Data Roaming!?! That had better be temporary, really short temporary, like back to 3G when I get out of bed tomorrow temporary.

That "PS" of yours is what I mean by less service. Forget all the "stuff" for a minute and consider the basic functionality...the signal. There's no way around it - Verizon is just plain better for data.

Now, voice quality itself is actually very very good (as in clear) on Sprint due to their choice of band. But for data it's not as reliable.

The ONLY reason I'm with Sprint is the price. I live with the downsides because money is an object to me. That's why everyone who has Sprint has Sprint. You get a lot more features for less money than other carriers, but you don't get the same core network.

So the other day when we went to get our Nexus S 4G, the rep told us Sprint, Att and Verizon are going through updating and/or tearing down old towers and installing new towers. However, they are taking down towers prior to putting up/turning on new towers to pick up the "slop" as it were. He said something like the new towers have a higher "bandwidth" so one new tower can do the job of 2 old towers. The contact I talked to said the midwest (IN, OH, MI, IL) should be up at full go by Q1 2012, so October to December I guess, in time to support the large influx of users for the upcoming Superbowl in Indianapolis. He was also under the impression Indianapolis should officially have 4G turned on by mid to late summer.

Sorry. I don't care how wide an area new towers cover, it would still be cheaper to replace the antennas on the old ones and have overlap than tear them both down and build one new one.

I know the whole VZW vs. Sprint is subject to where you live and where the towers are in your relative area. I was working on a client's Droid X here and I saw the relatively strong signal drop from 3G to 1X! That's something I haven't seen in a looooooooooooong time on any Sprint phone I've had.

In my area, I see way more 1x than 3g with sprint.

Sprint service in the Chicago area used to be rock solid. Lots of dropped calls and poor call quality the last few weeks. I hope this changes soon as I really do not want to switch to VZW.

Yep! Thats why i'm with sprint. Verizon would cost me $100 more per month for about the same plan. (family plan with 3 phones). But Verizon has far far better coverage and 4g in my area. Sprint no 4g and sometimes spoty 3g. But in the end I just cant see spending 2400 more over that next 2 years.

+1 on the cost of Verizon over Sprint. I really believe this issue will be resolved. I'm sure Sprint has caught wind of this complaint and is in the works of fixing it. I'm sure all the new people they aquired with the Evo/Epic 4g and now the Nexus 4g they don't want to go in reverse and start loosing people back to the carriers they came from due to poor signal coverage. Probably came down to a cost cutter measure that Sprint attempted and it isn't working out, now they will realize it wasn't the route to go and have no choice to pump up the signal juice or start loosing customers.

At least that is my take on things, sure you won't see Sprint admit to it coming down to money and cost cutting but that is the bottom line in any company, cost cost cost...

i recently noticed the difference. if they dont have this resolved come october, then i see an overpriced datacapped verizon plan in my near future. I really hate verizon, you do realize that all of our coverage problems are steaming from verizons greed. you guys really should read through the first few pages on this forum. Sprint Community: Voice and 3G coverage being drastically...
It does not look promising for sprint, i foresee a buyout by verizon which will leave only 2 nationwide carriors free to price jack and datacap as they please.

just wasted some time on the phone with a srint rep and she is claiming that more towers are scheduled to be added within 119 days. She could not say if it would bring coverage back to how it used to be and that is highly unlikely. but whatever..

Make sure you call back in 119 days to give her an update in your area
