Is there any known disappointments with the Samsung Epic 4g?

The wait is disappointing.

As for TouchWiz that's all but too easy to get, all you have to do is root and install a custom ROM, one of which will be released soon and the developer plans to strip TouchWiz 3 from a Captivate ROM so it could be that easy, we'll see.

I have an EVO and I love the ability to group contacts and they show up the same way in my google contacts as they do on my phone and how I can link them to facebook contacts. I went to TMO today and it did say group on the phone under contacts but I read in another forum for them that, that feature doesn't sync with google? how stupid is that? GOD if its ALL android why do they keep taking features away

Ok- I'm getting real tired of all the "quit your whining just ROOT" posts.

I guess I should expect as much on a forum- but imagine for a minute the 10 MILLION phones Samsung says they hope to sell with galaxy s. (CTIA quote) Tell me- just how many of THEM do you think know what ROOTING IS?

So when they were told by someone at sprint- go try a Vibrant or a Captivate- it's the same phone sans keyboard- or go you tube some videos of the phones and their features...or heck - download Samsung's press junket from CTIA on the Galaxy S- all that crap they promised? 50% of that experience is now GONE.

Oh but don't worry- despite Samsung's deception you can VOID YOUR WARRANTY by hacking the device! OH JOY!

I had a palm pre- am I supposed to say it's a great phone to some joe off the streeet because of the pre central and pre development community? Or do I be honest and say- WebOS has a cool notification system but the rest of the phone features/hardware is a complete waste compared to the competition?

ROOTING is cool for those who want it- but for those that expect to buy a phone and have it work as ADVERTISED/MARKETED at the announcement of the phone's trade event release... we've a reason to be disappointed.

For all the rooting fans that feel I'm being a whiner- I'm curious - do you buy a CAR that has a good engine/chassis, but crappy interior and gut it and have it all redone and still say the car is a great value?

That's basically what I'm hearing from the "you're being a crybaby" threads. Drop a bunch of cash on a premium phone- then GUT it and reprogram the phone to insert the omitted content and say thank you sprint/samsung by being asked to pay more for my troubles.

While I was curious about rooting my PRe- I had ENOUGH troubles/glitches with the phone without hacking it so I never did. Evo was the same thing- I'm sure I had a bad hardware device but at 29days into my 30 I'm not going to risk it and I returned it- rooting wouldn't have made my experience on the EVO any better in that case.

Yet the EPIC- is the 1st phone I'd consider Rooting- why you ask? BECAUSE SAMSUNG took features out of the phone I've been wanting for months and I want them. So now instead of turning on my phone and just having it work as I hoped- I have weeks or even months to look forward to of looking at cyanogen or some other place weekly if not daily for some new cooked up hack to make my phone have features the Vibrant already had?

Well you can either enjoy the phone as is, or root and make it how you want it. Plain and simple. If you're afraid of messing it up, don't touch it. There isn't anything Wrong with the phone out of the box.

You make it sound like rooting is this extremely scary and damaging process that only the most technologically savvy can even consider to attempt. It's not like you're cracking your phone in half and jumping inside with nothing but a screwdriver and being told to fix it. You're not tarnishing your phone's purity or damning its soul to hell for all eternity. It isn't that big of a deal really.

I have a Pre and I felt the same way for a little while (that it was so buggy that there was no way that "messing" with it would help at all), but I finally took the plunge and I made the phone actually usable and enjoyable for the way I use it. I would have gone insane had I not rooted my Pre. It turned it into a phone that could actually last me a year despite it's problems.

Also I know everyone has features that they like more than others, but the ones they removed from the epic both seem extremely minor and sound like things that can be added in the future with patches. That said, rooting will help you make your phone the way you want it. There are, like you said, millions of people who buy each phone, and there's no way the carrier/manufacturer can make every single one completely happy because everyone has different tastes. Adding one of your desired features and removing another would make many people upset. I happen to think the Epic has the perfect assortment of hardware, and while I wish there were a few software changes, everything on that front can be changed. Hardware is where you want them to focus because you're stuck with that for the life of the phone. Rooting is here for people who want to help the phone match what they want, because no phone is 100% perfect for everybody who's going to buy it.

holy crap

apologist are amazing

The thread specifically is asking for disappointments. What is wrong with people replying truthfully to it?

And no root isn't not as simple of a process for the everyday joe as you think. You don't just root, there will be millions of different combinations of roms + patches + sideloaded apps that the normal person won't know or don't want to handle.

I'm an Evo owner.

I'm getting the Epic for 2 reasons. Keyboard and CPU/GPU being quicker (I play a lot of emulator games and both of these help alot)

But the thing i'm most concerned about with Samsung phones is with their support (Still no Froyo on the phones, bad support for past samsung android phones ). And a much more active modding community for HTC phones. I also think Sense is a much better system than Touchwiz.

Ohh noo the music player isnt as fancy as the other Galaxy S phones the phone is ruined!!!!

Complaining over a music player??? Ridiculous

Samsung cant please everyone because I GUARANTEE if this phone had the fancy music player and font but Samsung took away the LED notification or something else people would be upset.

The freaking G1 had LED notification and your telling me a phone like the Vibrant or Captivate which has double the RAM, ROM, Internal memory, better screen, better camera, etc and it is missing something as small and simple as that????

And even if the LED flash, or Notification, or Front Facing camera arent a big deal lets look at some other phones problems

Do you think Droid X users would ditch being able to change the size of widgets in order to have no locked bootloader?? Of course!!

What about Evo 4g users, do you think they would sacrifice one of their HTC widgets for no 30 FPS cap??? They would in a second!!

The point like I said before is that NO phone is perfect. So yes while you may be upset with a fancy music player that the Epic is lacking there are much more serious problems other phones have right now. Some phones dont even work if you are left handed (iphone 4) yet you are upset over a fancy music player.

Compared to other phones out there the Epic's problems (no fancy music player, or custom fonts) are insignificant.

If the Epic had a serious hardware problem than I could see a valid complaint but something as small as a music player just sounds like you are being picky.

I like this post. Basically what i wanted to say but I was too tired and the thought of typing it out on my broken palm pre was just to daunting of a task.

Now this is someone who makes a really good point. The Epic doesn't have a hardware problem really. Software problems? Fixable in the future. Hardware problems? You're out of luck. Pull out the rooting tools and you're good to go. Fix all the little software pet peeves and you have your god phone.

I wasnt discounting what you were saying or complainging about, I guess I shoudl have just typed what I really thought instead of my previous post.

This is basically all I was trying to say

I dont consider many of these "problems" on the epic to be serious

Things like customizable font or new lock screen or whatever can be changed or fixed by root, maybe a new app in the Market that would include these features, or even a future update from Samsung that may include them.

Whereas with a hardware problem then you are stuck and there is no way to fix the problem unless they do a phone recall or include a free bumper case

Most people wont even care enough to root and will just deal with it. The masses are ignorant and will not know any better. Honestly my family wont even think anything different until I root and change their phone (on request only).

Honestly I think youre thinking too far into it. The lamen or commonly referred to as the masses are ignorant to such things. The only people that will know whats missing are phone geeks like us. The rest will not even think twice about it and will be fine. Sure there will be complainers here and there, but the masses wont even know the difference therefore there is no problem. Not to mention there are alot of people out there that either prefer or will prefer the native android UI and features over the fancy TW take on it. Honestly the only people I can see that will complain are the following: 1) people who complain just to complain 2) those who hear people complaining and follow blindly complaining 3) lazy phone geeks not wanting to take the time to root. and 4) those people that saw the other galaxy s phones and want the exact same thing (basically #3 with a minor twist).

Honestly the phone is already a hit and that shows that people will not care about the minor UI differences.

Well, after being excited to root the Evo only to realize that one of the security flaws were patched, I'm up for a challenge (if it really is any) with the Epic.

I laughed at that last part.:D

Can this phone be used internationally? I pre-ordered this phone and I'm going to Mexico in September on vacation... I remember the cs guy at Sprint telling me that I couldn't take my Evo internationally...

Pick up a cheap Touch Pro 2 and get it unlocked.

There are ton of things that I like about the phone, hardware being at the top of the list. But... I don't think it should surprise anyone that people are voicing their opinions about what they don't like... especially on a thread asking about known dissapointments. :)

Yeah, but it seems we have already spotted out the flaws. If someone has a new disappointment, then they are free to comment, but where people get annoyed is when there's a whole list of "yeah, I hate that too. C'mon fix it Samsung!"

I am very disappointed that I have to wait until Aug 31st to buy the phone. My Samsung Moment is really frustrating me. Everything just lags and freezes on that phone.

Would you rather have a phone with software glitches now? That would really sour the release. Qik for one, doesn't work well yet. It will, but not right now. My guess is that it will get updated before release, just like it did with the Evo. Normally I wouldn't care, but its an app that centers around Sprint's new 4G devices, and I'd like to use it on the first day to test it out, since I'm in a long-distance relationship.

Plus, with the system dump ahead of launch, we may get root before release, which would be awesome.

uhh the intercept takes the hero out back and has a field day on it.

oh that's coming from a hero owner too. may god rest it's soul when it gets killed when i get the Epic or EVO, can't decide between the two, but i'm leaning Epic, more cuz of no 30FPS hardware cap.

Thats got to be the funniest thing I have heard. The Hero is way better than the Intercept. My brother got one and the thing does nothing but lag, freezes up, has to constantly erase data to run smoothly, on the other hand my wifes hero is very responsive, unlike the Samsungs unresponsive buttons. All of there devices are the same poor quality.

call sprint and get the mexico package for like $5 it doesn't make it free to call but with the add on you gets you discounted ? per minute

Wait- are custom fonts also removed? Shoot what did they leave IN THE PHONE?

Samsung Video Player with the 5.1 button in the corner (Nice!)
Cool notification bar toggles (including a 4g toggle!)
Contacts app
Allshare
Thinkfree office (I think)
My files
TV-out (I hope)
Camera app with the cool settings to play with

All this here is better than nothing at all. Although it sucks that this phone is lacking some features+apps, remember that there are apps to fix this issue.

For me Launcher Pro will solve most of this issue because I won't have the ability to use samsung's widgets anyhow in Launcher Pro and I'll have up to 15 apps to place in the bottom dock. As for the lock screen, I have been using an app called "screen mode" on my Moment for many months now. I use this app to bypass the lock screen all together and plan to use it on the Epic 4G as well because I hate having to unclock the screen after hitting the power button.

Not being able to change the font is of course a let down but the biggest let down for me is the missing Samsung music player. I was worried about this a month ago when I kept seeing the vanilla music icon on the Epic 4g rather than the Samsung music icon. My only hope now is the hacking community porting it to the Epic 4G where it belongs...

P.S. - It could be worse... We could have gotten stuck with Bing like the Fascinate LOL

Actually my Samsung Moment is of better build quality than my BlackBerry Pearl. Samsung doesn't make poor quality hardware. I have a bunch of Samsung devices and they all run perfectly. My Moment is the best phone I've used, and while it isn't the best quality Android phone, it still gets the job done nicely. I honestly have no real complaints with it. However, I understand we all have our opinions, and you are as entitled to yours as I am mine. :)

My biggest complaint of the intercept would be that its not as good as the moment. Its pretty much the same, but unresponsive capacitive buttons and evdo rev.0?

Anybody ready for this?????

Wait for this
