Is this the beginning of the end for Play Music?

The problem with YouTube music is that the free version doesn't allow you to stream music in the background and there are tons of ads which is pretty much a deal breaker.

I think I could handle an ad or two that couldn't be skipped if the free version could play in the background.

Phew! Thank goodness! I figured they probably would be ported, but it's still a huge relief!!!!
Have you downloaded the music you've purchased? Once I buy it, I own it, so I always download it to my PC to add to my local library. Then I don't have to worry about cloud availability.

I've used GPM for years, it seriously needs a redesign and update, I don't think they've changed it or added features the entire time I've used it.

I use it entirely for streaming, $10/month with YouTube premium included is a steal in my eyes, I listen to music multiple hours a day and most anyone I can think of, even local artists, are available. Significantly cheaper than buying music.

I'm not concerned with switching to YouTube Music unless it eliminates my play lists.

If any of you have Amazon Prime you can listen to music for free. They do offer a premium version but the free version works pretty good. I don't recall all of the details in differences because I use Spotify mostly.

That's probably a good alternative. I don't have Prime myself, but still worth mentioning.

Still haven't seen any sign of this purported capability to transfer my music from Google Play Music, so no.

Yes, I realize it's a rolling update, but then Google shouldn't have touted it until it was rolled out or until they were ready to turn on the switch for everyone at once.

There's Google disappointing us again with their half-assed marketing attempts.

I have Prime, and I can cache music for offline listening. I just don't think I can upload my collection. I'd like to have one service to listen to all my music, either on my Google Home Mini speakers or my phone while out for a walk.

Amazon - can't upload my library (I don't think) but I can cache for offline listening
GPM - uploaded library, offline caching and background listening for free
YTM - so far no library upload/migration, may need to pay monthly fee in order to cache even my own library for non-streaming and background listening

I have a Mac. I hate to say that I've actually considered an iPhone SE as a secondary device for going out for walks, for ease of getting my music from my Mac to the iPhone. Additionally - I'll be replacing my Pixel 2 XL this year, if I upgrade beyond a 64 GB device I should be able to have my entire collection on my phone and pick some alternate media player.

GPM has been giving me fits recently anyway. I have some tracks I've made from live recordings and then split into individual songs but I can't seem to get it to play them sequentially, even when they're added to a playlist in the right order.

My next upgrade, I'm just half thinking of doing this and loading all my music on the device.

I already started to create new playlists from my favorite artists in Spotify. And wish your cuts on my home screen. Works out pretty well so far. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound cheap but I just don't believe in spending money on streaming music service for myself. Heck, the only reason I have serious XM radio in my car is because SiriusXM gives you a great steal of a deal. Everyone knows that! I mean if it weren't for that deal, I went upstairs exam subscription either lol. Amazon prime and Pandora there are tons of streaming music services out there but for the freeness and the features and what not, Spotify looks like the best so far. I mean I would love to use YouTube music, and I could do with ads of course, but the whole no listening to music in the background and multitasking is a deal breaker from me.

Actually ready. I can't remember when was the last time I used Google Play Music. I guess November 2019...

I haven't used Amazon for music in a few years but the main difference than was the music available. The premium version offered a lot more artists and albums. Sort of like how only some movies are included in prime.

I'm right there with you... I've never used Amazon for music ever. Only Google or now Spotify.

Prime Music is pretty limited in terms of selection. It might even limit certain songs within an album.

Cant believe im the only one bothered by this aspect. I HATE that its connected to the youtube video service, I want separate services, NO CONNECTION. Its so annoying to see things i may have just dabbled in on the video app to appear and change my recommendations on the music app. I thought it would be a revamp of GPM a more modern better looking app that can compete with spotify (which i think other than UI wise it did great) but they need to be separate services. It bugs me so much so i hope they separate them completely, one is for music and one for video. But i doubt theyll do that and it irritates me. Also i dont actually like watching music videos, having them plastered everywhere on the app is annoying also, i liked that GPM gave you the option to check out video but it wasnt in your face about it, Im on the 7 dollar plan because i got the service the day it was released. Very disappointed if it remains the way it is now. Will find another service if it stays awful

I'm aware of that but when I did use it, the limitations didn't kill my experience. The premium version is only an additional 7.99 and believe there is a 3 month trial available.

You're right, I should download it to my Chromebook. Unless it's already there. Still figuring out how it works. 🤣
