I've got the new Moto X, you've got questions. Fire away!!!

Phil,

I just want to confirm that the Active Display still breathes. I keep reading about the hand gesture feature and I've watched videos, but I haven't seen the screen show a notification without waving your hand. I hope they didn't remove that ability.

I'm not crazy about this new crater — way more than a dimple — at all. Last year's was subtle. Part of the design. This year's seems off — as if they planned on actually doing something else with that space.
Maybe they should have filled it in with..... battery!

It does. And you can still tell it not to at night in DnD mode.

Phil will you be testing the durability of the leather and wood?

I'm sure moto maker helps. Hell, I'm disappointed with the size but I'm still considering it because of that. The moto x was almost perfect last year though, and the magic they worked with the design and size was awesome. All it needed was a camera.

I'll be using it like I use (and abuse) any other phone. But I can tell you now: Leather scratches. Leather mars. It's leather.

Can you use Moto Voice (always listening voice commands) with a locked phone?

This is one thing that killed the Moto X for me. The inability to use always listening when the phone is locked defeats the feature and I really hope they fixed it this time around.

Hey Phil, how's the call quality? Is the inner ear speaker clear and pristine? How is the cell signal for the phone, and does the antenna do a good job redirecting areas to detect network service?

And that's the theme I've had rolling around in my head this weekend. What stands out now? Or will the sum of the little things make the difference?

I remember you gushed over last year's model essentially saying that if you had to use one phone this would be the one and that you'd have a hard time parting with it. When I bought one to replace my GSIII it all made sense - the sum made it the perfect phone for me despite the mediocre camera.

Does the 2014 Moto X still do that or has the competition bridged the experience gap? Or is it that the experience isn't so new anymore as it may lack that feeling of new from past year's model.

This is exactly what I fear. They look great to me, but I don't see what they could possibly have done to allow the leather to holdup over time. Even just through a two-year contract. At some point it will get wet, exposed to the heat of the sun and rub against other objects and surfaces. As much as I like the look of the leather, I can't chance the back looking cracked and marred. Guess we'll see.

Not much sense in being able to bypass the lock with voice, right?

I'm really trying to not spoil my initial thoughts on it, but I very much have that feeling. What stands out this time?

Uh, calls are calls. I live in a really good AT&T area, so it's fine for me.

Um, there's a setting in Moto Voice to allow you to use most Moto commands without unlocking the phone. There on the old one, pretty sure it's still there on the new one.

...hmm.

My biggest problem with the S5 and G3 is that Samsung and LG cannot leave Android alone. Is the new Moto X just like the old Moto X where it is pretty much pure Android ?
