JT Super Clean Rom available on Rom Manager

Ok, I download the superclean rom, I get to the question to Reboot, so I do, then I get this error...please help.

Install from package....
Finding update package....
Verifying update package...

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
What do I do to fix this?

Did you solely install ROM manager and then tell it to install the JT super clean rom? If so, you missed a step: installing CWM to the phone via Odin. Without the low level flash of CWM it won't let you use the "update" since it's not properly signed (hence the error.) See this thread for help with CWM: Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers

Is there some other forum thread, or article that someone can direct me to that explains what all the different roms and kernels are? I've been browsing this site for a few weeks now, but haven't actually found an explanation of what they do and the differences between them, or where even to find/download them.

Think of the kernel as MS Dos - it's basically the core of the OS and interfaces with all the hardware. Think of the ROM as Windows 3.1, as in it's the graphical interface and provides the means to interact with the phone, provides all the basic apps and stuff.

As for where to find them, download ROM Manager from the Android Market. You'll also need to install ClockworkMod Recovery, which ROM Manager uses to install different ROMs and kernels.

Do i have to download a kernel off of say... xda, or can i do it from ROM manager?

you can do it from rom manager. you can do the build your own and pick every thing you want in the setup process. make sure you match your rom and kernel, ie dj05 or di01.

I may have messed up, I downloaded the voodoo kernel off of JT's stuff, and his super clean ROM and now all of my text messages send as blanks, and I don't know which caused it... any help would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like a mismatch between versions - the latest version of kernels/ROMs/modems are DJ05. The previous versions were all DI01. You have to use ALL DJ05 or ALL DI01, otherwise certain things like SMS stop working.

So, it sounds like you've flashed a DJ05 kernel and ROM, did you also flash the DJ05 modem.bin? If not, you need to. You'll have to flash it using Odin.

And just before you get into trouble, you need to read up on the Voodoo kernel you flashed so you know what can and what can't be done now. You have to be very careful about what you flash now that you have Voodoo installed, otherwise things go to hell in a handbasket.

Personally, I'd read up on how to uninstall Voodoo and just get rid of it. In most cases, it causes way more problems than it solves.

Well I wish I would have seen this easier, but anyway I used cwm to restore back to before I installed the ROM and kernel. Then, I redownloaded the DJ05 ROM, everything working fine, then I was stupid and heard good things about stupid fast, so I downloaded 1.54, now my phone will not go past the "SAMSUNG" lettering, even after rebooting (by manually going to cwm). I'm somewhat of a noob, so I could really use any help

Thanks in advance, sorry for the trouble

start by flashing back to stock or restoring (cause i know you did a nandroid back up). then maybe you should try setting everything up through rom manager. you can the super clean of you can build your own, which will take you through each step and you decide what you want. dont let something screwing discaurage you from trying something again. stupid fast is a great kernel. something got screwed up, no biggie, do it again. thats half the fun.

Well what I'm trying to do now is remove the voodoo kernel then use Odin to go all the way back to stock, but how can I just flash back to stock? Sorry if I sound stupid (I feel stupid so its all good)

Few things... while ROM Manager/ClockworkMOD can flash kernels, it doesn't back them up. When you do a backup, all it backs up is the rom, cache and data. So, it sounds like what you did was flash JT's DJ05 ROM and his Voodoo kernel. Restoring a backup shouldn't have caused much problems because it was just restoring your ROM. So at that point, it sounds like you had the stock ROM with JT's Voodoo kernel. But, then you flashed one of the StupidFast non-Voodoo kernels. Voodoo needs to be completely disabled before flashing any other kernel.

So, first you need to get rid of Voodoo.

Here's a detailed thread with instructions: [HOWTO] Completely Remove Voodoo Lagfix - xda-developers

Or, this supposedly *completely* restores your phone to it's factory fresh state - ROM, Kernel, Recovery, Modem, everything. It will supposedly remove Voodoo, but the OP states you should try to remove it by other means first. Not sure why that is. [ODIN] Full DI01 ODIN Package - xda-developers

Once you're back to stock, re-root if need be, and then just steer clear of Voodoo. It's fine if you know the limitations, but like I said, for most, it's more trouble than it's worth.

If you want to upgrade to DJ05, you'll have to use JT's kernel or one of the StupidFast ones. Personally, I've never seen any performance increase, and I've seen significantly shorter battery life on every StupidFast kernel I've tried.

I'm currently using the stock DJ05 ROM with JT's non-voodoo kernel, and everything is running perfectly. It's been 24 hours since I took the phone off the charger, and I still have 75% battery... can't ask for much better than that.

Lol idk if you got the message, but anyway, I'm a little confused with the ADB. I got as far as like it recognizing my device and the AndroidSDK and what not, but how do I "use ADB to restore the mbr"? That part confuses me.

Edit: Okay, I am maybe getting somewhere? I kind of figured it out, but at this point this whole adb thing is confusing the heck out of me. I got as far as number 5 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804784 ) and now I am just lost, thought I did what it asked, tried to reboot my phone... nothing.

Edit (2): Somehow... I fixed it. Back to stock. You, my friend, are my favorite person in the world right now. Thank you so much for all your help, I apologize sooooooooooo much for being annoying and noobish xD

Cool!! Glad you figured it out... yea, it can be confusing, and things can go to hell pretty quick, but luckily, it's relatively difficult to screw things up beyond repair.

Even though you got it working, #5, that you were having trouble with, was manually clearing one of the partitions on the internal memory. On Linux, you mount partitions into directories. So the first step was to create this directory (/dbdata), the second step was to mount the one partition (/dev/block/st110) into /dbdata. And finally, the rm -f command deleted everything in that directory (which is actually everything on the /st110 partition).

ADB is basically a Linux command shell to execute commands on the phone, so if you ever come across commands you don't understand, you can always do a google search for that command and it'll always return tons of info. It may be for desktop Linux, but it'll be similar enough for you to get an idea what it's doing.

And almost everyone hoses their phone at one point or another!

I need some help I just downloaded the Super Clean Rom DJ05 off of rom manager, do I need a new kernel?

If you're using a DJ05 ROM, you need to use a DJ05 kernel and flash the DJ05 modem.bin as well. For the kernels, you have the option of using JT's (linked to on a post here), or one of the StupidFast kernels. For the modem, there's only one, again, linked to in a post here.

And just a word to the wise, from the sound of it this is fairly new to you, so I'd steer clear of any Voodoo kernel for the time being. You should fully understand what you're doing before messing with Voodoo.
