Leak Gingerbread-July 30

I bet $100 the next OTA is FroYo. Not trying to be a downer but they have all these issues with FroYo why would they just abandon it to try and implement GB? GB ROMs are all far less stable than FroYo ROMs so what's the big deal about GB?

If you want to use your front facing camera with Skype download the leaked version of Skype as it works perfectly.

If I could actually take you up on that bet I would... I do believe GB will be the next OTA.

I think froyo stability and gb stability is independent. New updates such as GB are always built to be MORE stable (hence its called progress) on other phones as long as its OFFICIAL. Logically, if HTC promised GB eventually, why spend more time and money fixing problems in Froyo when they already have to provide the GB update; they would just implement fixes in the GB update. That's my logic.

So yes, the next update should be GB.

It really comes down to timelines. If the reboot fix for froyo is a few weeks of work vs a major release with GB being several weeks out then fixing a major bug becomes the priority. However if GB is only a week or two behind were you could deliver the reboot fix. On Froyo then it makes more sense to wait.

And that is what we don't know now...how far along the GB release is.

I get the progress thing however I firmly believe there is no chance at getting GB yet. I think we will get it eventually obviously but I bet it won't be till end of summer time frame. Also HTC is not required to provide GB if they choose not to. They will obviously at some point but that doesn't mean it is coming in the next OTA. Just my opinion really and obviously I'd LOVE to be proven wrong by HTC!

If I remember correctly when we were all anxiously awaiting the bolt, Bennnn said HTC had signed a contract promising Gingerbread by end of 2nd Quarter. I am onboard the Gingerbread train. Why patch Froyo if GB is already being worked on and tested?

My guess is GB. Like others have said. Why patch Froyo when HTC has promised GB by 2nd quarter. Just makes more sense to incorporate the reboot fix into GB along with other improvements such as the horrid battery life that they are well aware of. Besides the EVO just got GB so we can't be that far behind since they are very similar phones. Just keep your fingers crossed and hope its GB but if it's just a patch fix for the reboot issue thta will be fine also. As long as this has been addressed A.S.A.P :)

Apples and oranges. The "Froyo patch" is really all about fixing the Radios. Only certain Radios work with Froyo/GB. The GB update is about additional phone features. They could be done together, or not. Personally, I want the Radio fix. I don't care when GB comes along.

Here's to hoping. I know when I got my TB a few weeks ago the person that I know who works at VZW told me not to bother rooting as an update would be soon. He works more on the network side and explained how they had to increase capacity on a few pipes after the DX ota. Now I think what he left unsaid was that those capacity increases may have been for another big OTA, namely this one.

If he works on for the NRB, then its likely he knows little about phone software updates. Just letting you know. Increasing cell site capacity has absolutely nothing to do with software. It has to do with NEW people jumping to Verizon. That and the Thunderbolt is on LTE, which is currently UNDER capacity. This is from someone whom deals with both network AND software sides. Me.

Aside, I am really hoping its truth. It would honestly make sense since the update has Skype Mobile included and those whom installed the leaked MR2 lost functionality to Skype Mobile with Video.

Just wondering, but can someone tell me what a soak test is? I kept hearing about it when the Droid X came out, but I'm not sure what it is. Only thing I know is that you get the update early.

If you look at the MR1 update pdf it looks just like this reported MR2 update. Update pdfs are different than phone ads like you referenced.

Did you even look at what I referenced?? All are update PDFs, not ads. And here is the TB MR1 update, further cementing my point.

Being that this will eat up 1/4 of someones dataplan after 7/7 they have got to release it before then. (Unless OTAs don't count towards it)

Any official communication from VZW sent to your phone is free....texts or anything OTA.

A soak test is where an OEM (ie Motorola) sends a new update to a small batch of users (some randomly chosen, some members of the Motorola support forums) and sits back and watches what happens. If no significant issues arise then a few days later they begin pushing the update out to the rest of the user base. If there ARE issues they are confined to the few thousand "release candidate testers". They apparently didn't let the soak test go long enough for the DX because of the numerous issies.

This is allows more in depth testing before a full push. If HTC had done this those of us with Thunderbolts would not be dealing with the reboot problem because they would almost certainly have uncovered the issue and killed MR1 before most of us had it.

Just talked to a tech support person at Verizon today and they confirmed the June 30th date for MR2 update.
