LG G2: Button Placement

The back buttons are fantastic. My old Galaxy nexus was constantly on low volume instead of vibrate (I only use vibrate and light flow for notifications) due to the accidental pushing of the buttons. That has been eliminated on this phone. I almost feel as if I cannot go back to side buttons ever again.

Knock on/off is also a fantastic feature. I use it a lot and it is reliable. I am also one of the people who knock on the screen of other devices to wake them up. Oops.

Adding battery life to these features is the icing on the cake. Let's face it, most consumers have battery issues and it is probably the biggest hindrance to modern devices. This phone somehow just amazes in that category. Once I got rid of the Facebook app, my battery life has been in the stratosphere. If you are a mid-to-low user, you'll probably have to only charge it every other day to every third day. It's that good.

It's somewhat rare to read that someone dislikes the onscreen buttons and would prefer capacitive ones.

Well, essentially look at the Note 3. Notice that there is exactly the same amount of space below the screen and the buttons are down there instead of wasting real estate on the screen itself. I just haven't seen any advantage to the Google preferred on screen buttons in my 4 months with the G2, and since they waste screen space, I'd prefer them to be off screen.

The main benefit of having on screen buttons is that they can be customized. And unlike capacitive buttons, on screen buttons move when going from portrait to landscape.

I'm really not a huge fan of the back buttons, I have accepted them but find the proximity to the camera lens a problem (if trying to use for taking pic) and I hate fumbling for the center button to turn on screen in some situations. I would like them more if they were further from the camera lens and had a better differentiated middle button (something that is easily recognized by touch as the center button).

And the knock-on function is just kind of annoying because it performs so randomly. I love the concept and love it when it "works" - the problem is it is so inconsistent that it can't be relied on all the time so it make me schizo trying to determine whether to knock or search around for the hard to find center button. Again both of these *concepts* are fine, but the quality of their implementation is not up with the stellar hardware of the phone.

I am indifferent about the back buttons. I love knock on, but I hate the on screen Android buttons. The screen is roughly the same size as the S3's screen because of the space wasted on the on screen buttons. Samsung also mitigates the need for knock on with the physical home button.

The screen is 8% larger than the s4 with the nav bar taking up 6% of it. So technically you have a 2% boost in screen size, that said. Apps are supposed to implement hiding nav bars. Ala YouTube and the gallery. I also believe KitKat is going to allow those buttons to slip from the screen when they aren't necessary, this of course negating the real estate they take up on the display. I know I have a few apps that cause the nav bar buttons to turn to white dots, indicating those apps support said function.

Re: Button Placement

I don't mind the back buttons, but they aren't head and shoulders better than side buttons for me. However knock on and knock off means I seldom have to use the back buttons.

Same here. The only time I even touch the back buttons is when I need to take a screenshot, or turn up the volume.

I haven't used the back buttons in I don't know how long for anything other than turning the phone off. I hated the side buttons on my Galaxy S4, because I was constantly pressing them by mistake when putting it in or taking it out of my pants pocket.
