LG G3 and Cyanogenmod 12

I actually went back to my Nexus 5 because I don't like the interface on the G3 and it so painfully slow compared to my stock Nexus 5. I'm now looking for a replacement rom for the G3.

I know you lose the LG Camera App which is a bummer but I was wondering what else was lost.

  • Double tap to wake and turn off? Would hate to have to use the power button on the back all the time.
  • Knock code? Not a big loss
  • Smart Screen? Nice to have

Thanks

Since it's now possible to root without downgrading from 5.0, I'm strongly considering flashing a rom for the first time in my life.

However, I only have a Mac, is it still going to work or do I need a Windows computer for rooting and flashing?

I agree, the LG firmware is hideous. You will lose the google camera and any stock lg apps (such as the stock lg messaging app, but i use hangouts for sms anyways), but you will lose knock code also. You will keep double tap to wake and tap to sleep, and get many, many more features than what the lg firmware contains. Plus, stock android lollipop looks SO much better than the stock lg firmware.

But all in all, besides the lg camera app, you dont really lose anything that's super useful. I would highly recommend flashing a custom lollipop ROM.

Back up the camera app (use App Backup & Restore so you get an apk file). Flash the ROM. Install the camera (just find it in a file manager and tap it - the installer will run and install it.) If the hooks (APIs) it uses are available in CM, it'll work.

VMWare should work. Then you run Windows in VMWare. Then you run the LG Tool in Windows. (How to Unroot/Unbrick LG G3! | LGG3Root.com ) I don't do Apple (they cost me a small fortune when they decided to switch from the 68000 CPU), so I can't try it to verify it.

Nice app but the camera app isn't listed. I'm using stock lollipop.

I decided to try out CM12 nightly (20150310) and I'm very happy with it so far except maybe for battery life which seems worse than stock. That doesn't worry me too much as this is not a stable release and I assume things will get better with time.

I already had lollipop and had some trouble finding all the information needed to install CM12. Here are the steps I ended up using.
Maybe it will help some of you.

How to get into recovery mode... How to Enter Recovery Mode on LG G3

Good luck!

Thanks for this! Just flashed the moto camera yesterday, and I'm loving it much more. Thank you!

You're welcome. Just make sure you go into settings (the little bug icon in the lower right after opening up the settings wheel) and make modifications to your liking.

I found that if a resolution is not set for the video camera, it will force close. Also, I do not see an option for 4k video recording. This is why I still have a backup camera app, although I typically record everything in 1080p.

Thanks for the quick rundown of steps. This is what I would have done.

Paul, most of what you said was a foreign language to me. Of like to root and flash too! Best place for resources?

Is there any guide on how to root and flash my G3 with links to the Cyanogenmod files?

Nunya and Taz, if you are still on 4.4 kit kat, here is 2 videos on how to root, install TWRP, and install a ROM.

How to root and install a custom recovery on the LG G3: http://youtu.be/m-jXW89uD4o

How to flash a rom on the LG G3: http://youtu.be/PEFE1w8QTpU

It's a very easy process, and once you get rooted and install TWRP, here is a link to all of the CM12 nightly builds (if you aren't sure what nightly is, it means that an update is available everyday, so you always have the most recent features available).

If you need more help, or run into something the videos do not explain, come back for help!

I am on Lollipop 5.0, will it still work?

What i posted above will not work of your on Lollipop already. There is a way to downgrade to kitkat, however, but i do not know exactly how to do that. I'm sure there's someone that can help you with downgrading to kitkat though.

xocomaox may be able to help you, he is very good when it comes to rooting/flashing.

Well after a week of CM12 I unfortunately decided to go back my Nexus 5 (such a smooth experience).

Reasons:
  • Battery life was a lot worse on CM12 than on stock for the G3, almost couldn't get through the day with very minimal usage...
  • Battery would sometimes be ok and then would drop by up to 50% within one hour without any usage.
  • Camera sucks even with the Motorola app.
  • Random slowdowns
  • Sometimes the lock screen would stop responding and I would have to reboot.

CM12 just isn't ready to be my daily driver at the moment.

I'll be on my Nexus 5 until either Cloudyg3 releases a 2.x version that supports the d852 or somebody manages to export the stock camera app so we can use it in any aosp rom...

I'll use my G3 with stock lollipop whenever I know I'll need to use the camera...

This is part of the reason why rooting and flashing can be so vexing. Personally, running CM12 on my G3, I've had the exact opposite experience - better battery life, responsiveness, etc. Sorry it was such a headache.
