LG G3 on ART

So tried the art 'update'. Seemed reasonably smooth once it settled. However, Facebook would not load, and nor would my chess game. Only had it a few hours before it became clear that all was not perfect, so have no real idea if it improves battery life for me.

In case this thread lives again any time...

Decided to try ART again. This time I let the UI settle for an hour after switching and restarting. FB is fine now, as is the game that appeared not to work before.

The performance is noticeably better. Certainly not astonishingly so, but snappier.

Gonna stick with it for a day or two - barring finding any apps that don't work, or any crashes that may lead me back to Dalvik. Hopefully it'll give me a bit more battery life also.

Has anyone been running ART for a significant amount of time now without issue? I noticed some people switched over and initially had better performance, but later seem to switch back because of lag, freezes, crashing, etc.

Been on ART for over a month now.
No problems. Zippy as usual. Battery life is great.

Mav.

I can turn off animations on dalvik to seem faster too.

But ART does more than just turn off the animations. Dalvik is a run-time environment. Everytime you start an app it gets compiled into executable code on your phone. ART precompiles your apps, and stores them in a compiled state. So when you start an app:

Dalvik: Load the apk and ODEX file into RAM. Load the runtime compiler into RAM. Compile the app, and load the output into RAM. Mark the RAM used by the program files and compiler as free. Start executing the compiled app.

ART: Load the compiled app into RAM. Start executing the app.

I also think (but don't remember for sure), that the ART compiler is capable of creating more efficient run-time code because it can spend more time on optimization, as it only runs once rather than every time.

ART compiled apps probably run a little bit faster while executing. But they LOAD a lot faster when you start them.

BUT, also understand that ART in KitKat is still "experimental." It may not work well on all devices, it definitely doesn't work well with all apps. Some apps won't run at all under ART.

I'm nearly a day in with ART, and I've tried every app, and they all work fine (so far). I had one 'crash' but I get the odd one now and then, so I'm not sure it's anything to do with ART anyways...

One thing I would add is that ART seemed to take a good hour or so to settle down. After initially switching, certain apps (FB for example) would not work. This is what led me to switch back after my first attempt. The phone was also very warm for a while (altho' the G3 does seem to be a bit more 'toastie' than most phones).

I'd say it's definitely snappier, although the difference is reasonably negligible. Battery... hard to say. certainly no worse, but if there is any gain, it's certainly not amazing. maybe a couple of %, but then, in a day, it's hard to tell. And there's the placebo effect that others have touched upon...

As it takes up a GB or so more internal memory, if I get to a stage were my 5.8gb free drops below 1gb before L is released, I'd also have no hesitation to go back to Dalvik.

I've been on ART now since last night and all seems fine. I can't say I've noticed much difference in speed, but I haven't had any issues. When I first switched over there was a bit of lag and certain apps like Facebook weren't working. Let it sit for a bit then rebooted and everything seems as fast and responsive as before. Battery life so far hasn't seemed to have been effected.

Mav, I just changed to ART, but now my phone is stuck on the red Verizon screen (like when rebooting)! I cannot turn my phone off and I don't know what to do?!? Have you heard of t his problem??

I ended up switching back from ART. I didn't really like it, every time you install an app and reboot the phone it has to re optimize the app for ART. I found this kind of annoying since I reboot usually about once per day. Also, I started having problems with notifications on Hangouts. For some reason, randomly, my phone stopped providing any sound when I'd get a Hangouts message (no notification tone). As soon as I switched back to Dalvik the problem resolved itself. I wasn't really noticing any smoother operation or extended battery life on ART.

LG G3 Internation - just realised that it will not reboot into ART. I have that option and can select it, but after reboot it is still in Dalvik. I don't know why. I initially thought I was running with ART and thinking it was a bit faster ... placebo effect... My phone wont even allow me to boot to ART.

Update Edit - I am running Xposed Framework with LG G3 Tweaksbox, so just read that is why I am being forced back into Dalvik. Once Android L is released I plan to unroot and try stock again.

Im glad to see art is running great on the g3. Some devices freak out when switched to art but the g3 doesnt seem to. I was hesitant on switching but i definately will now. Btw, im rooted, will this effect the switch over? I can always unroot just to be safe

It seems to be OK on the G3, yes. I had a few issues when I first did it - the main one being that my handset shut of completely overnight, so my alarm didn't go off (that was the first day on ART). I went back about a week ago, and it's been fine since. Whether it's actually snappier or gives any better battery life, is hard to say - I think it may do, but a large part of that is placebo I reckon. My usage fluctuates so much is almost impossible to tell. But it's no worse. If it works, I guess the only downside is the extra gig or so of memory it takes - might be an issue if you're app. mad.

Had to switch back since ART caused Spotify to skip over Bluetooth.

Music quality was lower on ART as well.

Switched To ART and all seemed good. Then I used Google Wallet, went in my car and the phone turned off. Turned it on, swiped the screen and it rebooted. It later rebooted again, so I went back to DALVIC.
I'm on a US Verizon plan.

My phone is not allowing me to switch to ART. When i try to switch is just reboots and is still on dalvik. I tried clearing my dalvik cache and some other stuff but it didnt work. I might just have to factory reset in order too. Also, for about a month and a half i have been getting the error message "com.google.process.gapps has stopped" every time i boot up my phone, will this have anything to do with me not being able to switch to ART?

My G3 is working flawlessly with Dalvik; I have no interest is messing with Art and getting unintended consequences for possible minimal gains in battery life / UI.
