LG G3 Overheating warning?

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

Well I'm another that hasn't experienced any overheating :-)

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

Man, the internet sure has latched onto this FUD topic. People are really trying to create a reason not to like/buy this phone.
Quite the opposite. I really want to like this phone, and I'm hoping this turns out to be a non-issue because I find the S5 un-inspiring. The truth is, enough users here (check the other thread), and reviewers, have encountered the warning, (and the built in device safety measures) to warrant a valid discussion on it. I would rather see my wife get this phone (honestly curious myself to play with it and see it in action), but not if it's gonna stop in the middle of a video recording due to heat issues. Can some of you here try some video recording "torture tests"? :-)

I understand what you are saying...I have concerns as well. Monitoring an Android enthusiast forum for complaints never ends well. Most posts are negative in nature and cause people to get real nervous, doubting their purchase, etc, even if their gadget/whatever is flawless.

My point is there are a few mentions of this issue. There are issues with all electronics, some legitimate, most completely anecdotal. Whatever the case, the end result on the internet is almost always negative. You will find people who say the M8's speakers are terrible. Nope, etc.

I'd recommend trying the phone yourself and if it blows up during marathon 4k video recording sessions, return it.

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

I have a device that has given me this warning while recording. I was shocked and don't know how often i will see the message since don't record often.

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

I know, stuff can be researched to death and you will ALWAYS find one issue or other. I'm being a little careful here, and this is why. My wife was pretty set on the S5. It was me who told her to wait and check out the G3 because it seems better in some ways (on paper). She is big on photo taking, and I thought the laser focus and optical stabilization would make her happy. BUT, if she starts having issues with the phone that -I- steered her into, she is gonna give me an uncomfortable glare every time she gets a heat warning or whatever...lol
Ultimately she will handle them both and do her own research and I will mention what I learned in these forums or point her here. Have to cover my bases.

Most people dont come to the forums or online to talk about something unless they have had a problem. The majority of happy customers probably never come to a form to discuss that they are getting a great product so it goes to reason that based on use their could be some issues here and there with various customers or their handsets and in no way will represent that their are widespred defects or problems. Look at the forums for the s5 and you will see threads about over heating and temperature. Also look at the HTC one m8 and also heat topics and getting hot or over heating concerns. Electronics like computers have a fan that blows on the processor to help keep it cooler but a phone doesnt have the room for the cooling systems so depending on how hard the processor is working you will feel some heat and thats normal. People get paranoid and afraid and then hold out for a phone that will never exist because the standards are so high and something better always on the horizon that you would never pull the trigger..Get it use it for your trial period then tell us if you had problems with it etc.

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

Have not had an overheating issue at all, and this is with streaming the world cup for an hour and a half on my phone onto a computer monitor for the guys at work. I've also played the game Clash of Clans for a good 20 minutes with no screen off time and still did not get a message. I'll try shooting video for a minute or two to see if it pops up but so far the phone has been nothing short of fantastic.

EDIT: Shot a video for 2 minutes and some change with no message for overheating. The phone barely even got warm.

Topgonzo, do you have one? If you do, can you try some hi-rez video recording for a while and see if it shuts down recording with a warning?

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

You will always get people that like to be negative, they may be genuine or just saying it to get a response.

You have to weigh it up and I wouldn't base my choice solely on forums.

Have a look at trusted reviews, MKBHD, Android Central, Android Authority ect.

But in all honesty I haven't come across any overheating issues what so ever.

And can only base my views of the G3 from my week with it.

Its an incredible device and one that I would recommend without hesitation.

It's all good - I totally understand your caution. I swore up and down to my wife that she would love the Moto X (she's an iOS diehard). She lasted two days with it, then blamed me for all sorts of things that it did differently than her iPhone. I ended up selling it and got her a 5s.

Approaching this with a high level of scrutiny is certainly a good idea in your case! Good luck. ;)

I have not had the phone turn off yet due to overheating but this was only when I was setting up the device and had the screen on downloading apps and logging in to my accounts and such.

LG designed the G3 to throttle down the display and chipset when heat builds, so should not see shutdowns. That is unless throttling is turned off somehow. ...

Might notice game performance issues if playing long with certain intensive games.

Sure i can do that and yes i own one. I got mine last saturday and have been on it pretty much non stop watching youtube and facebook etc various social networking and texting. I dont game but use my camera on it and take video recordings. Ill do some high rez recording here for as long as i can and see if it over heats or i get a warning.

Thanks Topgonzo, and everyone here, for your input on this issue. I'll stay tuned for your report after video testing, as well as others who may perform this test for me. It looks like the bottom line is that it may be a bit of an issue, but so far not a major one and many are not encountering it at all in their own typical usage. If no one else is seeing a recording shut down, I'll probably just put it in the possible minor drawback column (every phone has em). If others experience a recording shut down, I will probably steer away.

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

Well just got my G3 in the mail and while setting everything up and going through settings etc it got warm but very little. So while it was like that i ended up video recording and the highest setting for 10 min straight and no issues with it shutting down. Yes it did get pretty warm but not hot where im going to burn my hand or feel uncomfortable. I wouldve tested longer but had to do some things. I'll wait and see what results you get Topgonzo!

re: Does the LG G3 Overheat?

My phone just locked up when unplugging it from USB so I had to remove the battery to restart it. When I finally got to using it after 5 minutes of the device being on (screen was only on for 1 min) I got the "warning your battery is too hot" from gsam battery monitor.... This is ridiculous I hate it that my phones heat up though in the exact same conditions my tablets don't. :/

Sent from my T-Mobile Carrier locked LG G3 without root or anything like that. :)
btw, I'm a girl.

Wow! So this is 1 case of overheating. Wonder if it's carrier specific??

There's a huge thread on the XDA forum about people having their phones randomly shut down and they have to power it back on or remove the battery and restart after. It's pretty concerning.

It didn't shut down... It was on but I was stuck on my home screen. It was like I was looking at a picture and trying to touch it to make something happen. It was weird.

Ironically, MKBHD is one of the first reviews I saw, and they encountered the overheating warning and were not able to adjust the brightness. It also happened again when he was navigating in Google Maps. Here is the link - the issue starts right at about minute 9.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QH1qFd24bY

It's one of the videos that caused me to come here and chat with people who have the phone and get real world experience. Someone in this thread asked me for links, and I finally got a chance to go back and look through some of the video reviews I watched. There is at least one more that mentioned encountering the same issue, but I think everyone here already gets the idea.
