LG G3 - Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

Since the US version has only been out a few weeks I would be interested to hear more from our friends abroad that picked up the G3 back in May.
Maybe it is an issue that rears it's ugly head after a few months? I inspected mine with a magnifying glass last night and did not see the slightest indication of cracking. Not sure if that means anything, I am pretty certain that all of the units start out more or less perfect.
All we can do is wait and see. Great phone but if my G3 does experience these issues down the road you can bet that it's going back.

Yuppers!

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

How about because it's a legitimate point of discussion? Why do you want it to die? Would you prefer to believe the G3 has no flaws? Does this thread threaten your self-identify in some way?

The G3 has no flaws dang nabbit! Merry Xmas! :)......j/k

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

Well it could be people are forcing the Micro USB in and causing the cracks. I've mentioned on other post that if feels difficult to plug in but on mine you can't plug straight in but angle down a degree or two and it goes in easier than any other phone I've had.

Not knowing what the exact cause is, I can neither deny nor support your theory. That being said, how does plugging in the usb cause the cracks at the top of the phone near the IR blaster?

Yep I work the angle as well

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

Defective part? I was just offering a guess on how maybe on that side just from my experience when I first got the phone and just surprised how tough it was plugging it in where I thought I'd break the port eventually.

But honestly looking at Brits post above with both ends cracked, I would say for both ends to happen is more a quality/manufacturing issue. Seems to happen at weak spots of the plastic where the holes are made.

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

My phone has the bottom crack, but I haven't had any intolerable problems. The phone gets warm some times, but no more than other phones. A little bit of lag here and there. Are people returning their phones for this?

Is there anyone experiencing this issue without a case?

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

No idea what people are doing. We here are just becoming aware of the issue, no clue if it is isolated, etc.
As far as returning them for this reason; I guess that would be up to the owner. As I mentioned earlier, if it happens with me it's going back faster than Oprah can eat a sandwich.

Oprah can eat a sandwich pretty quick. :)

Mine is well, even after a drop onto pavement. Some cases have such a tight fit that getting the on and esp off can cause extra stress that may cause weak area to show. I had the Otter Symmetry case at first and that was tough to get off.

Stress is a funny thing... Those two points are most likely the weakest points and they fail in sequence. Not unexpected I guess, a new chassis is an unknown and you'd never be able to adequately test until it's mass produced and used in several different ways.

If I was a betting man, I'd wager that earlier versions of the body had larger holes and LG reduced their size to lower stress on the areas around them.

So LG well do the 'first we've seen' dance for a bit, and eventually replace affected units... While quietly fixing the design for future runs. Basically what all companies do.

Oh, and the OP is an anti-G3 troll, post is fine though.

Crack is whack!
No cracks here.

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

I appreciate your opinion (big holes, small holes) but not sure where and how you are coming to this conclusion?? Looking at the number of pics on the web I am not seeing (to the best of my ability) any differences in the hole size.
We have members here and at XDA reporting the issue and it appears the "case theory" may also be out the window. A couple of guys have the cracks and have never used a case.
It's interesting to read the first few posts at XDA after someone created the thread about this, denial, insult, make fun of, etc......I guess they also have their share of "heads buried in the sand" over there. As more information became available and claims from members experiencing this issue, they just went away. I get that there are people that don't want to hear or accept this....sorry.

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

Look we get it.....you love the M8 and dislike the G3. Please stop reporting unnecessary negative stories on a device you clearly dislike.
Whether he likes or dislikes the G3 has no bearing on whether the problem exists. Personally, as someone who is peripherally interested in the G3 (and the M8): This is mildly interesting to me. Since AC is the only Android-related place I regularly hang, I might not have known about this possible issue had it not been brought up here.

AND no cracks AT ALL on mine and it took a FALL from 14 FEET!!!
Since my 2007 Chevy TrailBlazer hasn't caught fire, yet, should GM cancel the recall or I disregard it?

And here I was thinking that was some kind of metal this whole time. Still feels like it to me .. guess I was wrong though lol.
No offense intended, but you bought an expensive device on so little research as to not be aware of the fact that its case was plastic, rather than metal? In the reviews I read, that was one of the very first things noted.

All plastics are cheap...
That's not even remotely accurate. Kevlar is a plastic, and Kevlar certainly is not "cheap."

You assume I did little research but that's not the case. I read up and watched a ton of videos on things I was concerned about (build quality was low on my list as I am a case user anyway) and once I was comfortable with the answers I found, my final test was to go to store and actually hold one in my hand ... Research done. I liked it. I bought it.

Oh and, to stay on topic, I still don't have any cracks on mine.

Re: Widespread reports of cracks appearing at the microphone port

I thought the silver thing was a metal as well. No review has touched upon it, that I've seen. We all knew the case was plastic, but that wasn't specifically mentioned.

No cracks on mine yet. I have dropped it. Removed and replaced multiple cases. Hopefully it stays this way. Sorry to see some of the devices cracked.
