LG G4 First Impressions & Pending Review

Will you be rooting?

This is the first phone i have been happy to stay stock.

However i know once development progresses i will be rooting.

Will your G4 get the root, Rom & recovery treatment?

Re: Will you be rooting?

I have always been very carefull with rooting, i heard a lot of people bricked thier phone a few years ago so i never even tried actually.

It sure has its benefits, but if i mess up i cant just get a new phone the next day.
Call me a [language], but id rather not risk it.

Or is it much easier to root nowadays?

Re: Will you be rooting?

Its Not impossible to brick but that term is being used for bootloops which are two very different things.

Brick is permanent damage and risks are user dependant but i would say low.

More often its a bootloop and you can very easily recover from that.

Rooting is not necessary but i like to have that bit more control over my device 😀

Re: Will you be rooting?

Since I have the H815 model (no carrier bloat) Im not usually as quite in a hurry to root. :)

Re: Is your G4 Naked?

The G4, to me, looks and feels like a high quality smartphone, and I will be using a case soon.
Now that I look at it, the G2 seems like a toy compared to the premium feel of the G4.

I used a case on the G2 and am used to the feel of a case on a phone.
Without a case, the G4 is harder to get out of the pocket (non leather), its too thin.
I will be using a case soon to protect it as I am afraid to damage this fragile thing :) Also the phone costs a few hundred dollars.

And using a thin, non glass screen protector (currently the one that came applied to it out of the box, which seems fine)

Re: Will you be rooting?

Yes, I am probably going to. Aside from clearing out bloatware, I need to find a way to enable my wireless hotspot.

Re: Is your G4 Naked?

If you have a bumper case everybody wants to see pictures of it! And the name and of course now to get one.

Sorry I can't recall the name and no longer have the wrapper, but I should have thought that by now most phone accessories stores and mall stands would have this sort of thing. :)

I have a silver metallic plastic back G4 and it just slides in and out of my pocket quite easily! I find it very easy to maneuver and adjust in my pocket naked. Did you mean you find it hard to grip/handle naked??

Do I recall a couple of close shaves with the G3 last year? :)

Re: Will you be rooting?

I always tend to root toward the end or when I know my device won't be updated/upgraded by the manufacturer any longer. I've rooted so much that I'm pretty much done with it. Been there, done that. Too much time taken to maintain and keep it stable and watch for bugs and check to see what's broken and when a new fix is released.....*sigh*.....im done!

Re: Will you be rooting?

I rooted my G3 and it has transformed it into an incredible partner! So much so that I can wait another year and pass up the G4. I got my wife a new G4 (traded in the HTC M8) and there is no comparison. The screen is beautiful, no lag and the camera is top notch. With that said, my rooted G3 is right there, and for my purposes it exceeds everything on the market.

Re: Is your G4 Naked?

I mean compared to the G2, with or without a case.

I think its because of ts thickness, or because of the curved back.

Still, its not that hard to get out of the pocket, not like its a big deal to me.
But I assume it will be easier once I get a case.

Re: The times they are a changin

I have a G4, S6, Note 4, 6 Plus, Xperia Z2 , Nexus 6 in my possession. No way am I asking forgiveness. I know she would divorce me. Luckily she barely pays attention to phones and wouldn't know from one day to next what I'm carrying.

Dude, I don't want your phones, I want either your income or your Line of Credit!

Re: Will you be rooting?

I used to be a flash-o-holic with my phones out of need to fix what was broken or unavailable. If some great features are made that I really want, then I most likely will. Any custom rom will have to include the stock camera apk and I honestly don't see what could be done with the kernel except for undervolting improving the battery or possibly tweaking the framework some, but knowing the developers I am sure they will cook up something good.

Ooohhh good defense! Haha :D.

My gf has an absurd amount of shoes as well so I can use this. Thanks Warp :D.

Well now I feel sorry for my gf. I'm the gf who has both a large number of shoes (I collect Chucks and also have several pair of hiking sandals/boots, gym shoes, etc) AND I change devices about twice a year!

Re: Will you be rooting?

You can root and still keep your phone stock. Rooting and flashing roms don't go hand in hand.

With that said, I can't wait to have root. I need it to be able to have my phone switch to high accuracy mode and back to battery saving location based on which app I'm using. Also, I need root to freeze other system apps that I'm unable to disable through the settings menu (and then there's bulk uninstalling of apps, too). Proper use of Greenify requires root. The DataSync app also requires root and, since I'm keeping my G3, I'd like to use that to be able to keep both my phones' app data synced.

Plenty of reasons to root. No real reason not to if you're able to do it safely. I think I'm done flashing ROMs, though. The stock LG UI offers plenty out of the box, unlike the extremely boring stock Google UI.

Re: Will you be rooting?

Haven't seen a need to root any of my recent phones. The g4 is no different.

Oh I thought you meant a true bumper case (case that only goes around the edge and doesn't cover the back). I don't know why companies advertise these kind if cases as a bumper case.

Re: Will you be rooting?

I dunno, a LG G4 running vanilla Android seems pretty appealing to me. I'm thinking about it.
