LG G5 initial impressions

I think it remains to be seen if this whole modular stuffs will be hit or end up being failed experiment for LG. I don't think a lot of G5 users will buy, carry around friend modules. Another question is what they are going to do for G6 with friend modules? If they want to keep G6 compatible with G5 modules, that would be severe restriction on design of phone I guess.
If looking at only the phone itself aside from modules, it's hard to say G5 is better phone than S7.

In my opinion currently have the G4, and coming from a S3:

Pros:
- Finger print security
- Metal body
- Modular concept as they can add functionality and keep the swapping battery and memory cards.
- More power (processor, memory, etc)

Cons:
- Like more the direction the G4 was going, a squarer format, curvy screen, and curved body, easier to grab and to stay in the hand, never drop my G4, my S3 fly a few times from my hands.
- Smaller screen (5.5 ----> 5.3) ???
- Smaller battery. ???
- More weight than the G4.
- Volume buttons again in the side, less user friendly and thicker phone.
- Camera module, the 16M camera should have get an increase in light gain (1:8 ---> 1:7 like the S7).

For those reasons, I’ll skip the G5.
They should have increase screen size, but not to copy the S7 edge, more like a bezel less smartphone. That’s what I would like to see.
I thing that LG was heading in their own direction, but it keep’s looking at their neighbours, and just tried to catch-up.

I just got done checking out some alleged picks of the M10. I'm sure it's just my taste, but to me that home button/fingerprint scanner makes that device uglier than any aspect of the G5. Very uninspired. Just a thought.

I'm not sure how anyone can judge a phone based on a bunch of pictures and some text about specs. As for the modules I think this is distracting everyone from the key point - Do you like the LG G5 as a phone with removable battery (only flagship that does this), micro SD expansion, 5.3" QHD quantum dot display with 554 ppi, same camera as the G4 with an additional 8 MP wide angle lens, metal unibody construction. After you decide whether (after you have held one and played around with it) you like the phone you can decide whether you're interested in the modules. Personally, having owned 2 Samsungs (S3 and S4) and 2 LG Phones (G2 and G4) I expect either one will be an excellent choice. For right now, the big driver for me is the waterproof (IP68) of the Samsung is quite appealing since I lost a phone to a dunk in the pool. Will definitely have plenty of time to check both out since I am not due to upgrade until 7/8/2016.

Lucky. My upgrade isn't until 12/1/2016

Damn, kinda a bad time of year. Maybe the BlackBerry Priv successor or the V11/V10 2. Note 6 actually, I never think of Samsung products. Or just hold out for the 2017 flagships.

Actually, maybe the perfect time of year, come to think. Still, you miss out on the 2016 early crop.

G5 Standar phone

If i want an standard cellphone i go for a samsung or another generic design, with the G line from LG the behind bottoms are the best, so now go back to black ... i will keep my G4 untill the end of the days of the phone, dont care about possessor speed or whatever

Completely agree. Remark: app drawer exists as option under settings.

My opinion (currently have G2).

Pros:
- looks comfortable to hold and quite like the understated design
- metal and curvy, not shiny and no fingerprints hopefully
- FM Radio seems to be there
- smaller screen at 5.3"
- narrower than G3 and G4 so easier for me to use single-handed
- like the modular concept as they can add functionality later on
- SD 820 so all the other bells and whistles that it provides

Cons:
- phone is taller than G2, G3, and G4 despite having a display smaller than the G3 and G4 (only 0.1" larger than the G2 yet over 10mm taller), top bezel seems overly large
- 2K display uses more battery and not required IMO
- smaller battery
- app drawer gone?
- icons on home screen seem to have changed to 4 across instead of 5
- camera module seems like a wasted opportunity. Seems excessively large for just some dials and buttons and 1000mAh battery. At that size they could have put a dedicated 3-10x optical zoom lense in there... maybe :-\

Not really sure about the G5. Credit to LG for being ambitious and exciting but unless you're definitely going to use the modular bits it may be worth waiting for in-depth reviews to see if they fixed/polished the normal stuff. Look forward to playing with display models!

Lets see what Samsung S7 is like. They seem to have gone the simpler and safer route and made what they currently have better. Rumoured larger battery, better camera, and I prefer the smaller size. Although I really dislike the glass on the back.

Also waiting for Sony Z6, Huawei P9, Xiaomi Mi 5, and even the Ulefone Future :-)

I'll be buying off-contract so shall see what the price difference is.

Another thought, you won't be able to use the other modules with cases on! Need to take out of the case each time...

It only exists in the Simple Home...which also blows up the size of the fonts etc. Not an excuse. However, LG has said that the software at MWC wasn't final...so one will hope that they see how much backslash the lack of the app drawer is getting and they'll revert the decision

I really want to see a camera comparison between this and the s7. Sounds like the s7 might have taken a step back from the s6, and the s6 and g4 were pretty darn close. Can't wait for a comparo

How good is the audio through earphones... For Flac and high quality audio files? Or does it need an add on module for that?

I like the wide angle lens and this G5 could replace my dash cam which is currently a G2 and sometimes I use my G3 but G5 could be real good for dash cam. thanks

Nice quick initial impressions video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5-IMCplHNE

I quite like the build quality and the rear design. No fingerprints and smudges! Only wish LG could've reduced the height of this phone by around 1cm. Hope it goes on display soon so I can see for myself. And hopefully some thorough reviews so we can see how the battery life holds up.

What are you reading that states we are anywhere near 4K on TVs when they can't even get enough UHD content as it is. Even now, on some of the cable channels you are getting 1080i, 720P with poor compression rations such that it doesn't even look very good. The current QHD is way more than enough for a phone and on some phones 5.0" and below I would say 1080P gives you way more than enough pixels to look very nice as long as its a good IPS LCD or SAMOLED.
