LG spectrum rooting / unrooting

I have an lg spectrum that I want to root very badly. However, before I do I would like to know if I can unroot to get the ics upgrade in (hopefully) a month. So, does the hard reset (vol up + power) work even if I install clockworkmod recovery or any other custom bootloader? Like if I root my phone and install a custom rom and bootloader can I revert back to factory settings using the hard reset? Or would I have to use the cab method and the lg support tool?

Welcome!

You can use the All-In-One (AIO) package to root and install recovery on your phone. After that, you can install one of the two custom ROMs available for the Spectrum. They are Broken Out Spectrum 3.0 and Eclipse.

You will also be able to return your phone to stock by installing the appropriate ROM. There is also a file that replaces recovery with the stock option. And then you can un-root your phone using the AIO again.

I ended up doing this basic thing on my Spectrum. I rooted and de-bloated v4 to the point I couldn't do the OTA. I had to flash the stock ROM, replace recovery, and then take the v6 OTA. Soon after that I flashed Broken Out 3.0. But once ICS comes out I will surely be undoing my root again just to try it out. And then hopefully we'll be able to root again and see some great new ROMs.

As for links to all this stuff, I'm feeling lazy. Just go over to the Spectrum forums at Android Forums.

Great! Thanks for answering. I would prefer doing this all manually through command line so that I know what's going on and make my own scripts later. I'll check that out though. And is there any way to fix my phone if I mess up so bad that I can only get into download mode? Would the built in hard reset work (vol up + power) to fix it? Would the support tool from lg (downloadable from the lg website) restore tool work? And I heard there were issues with clockworkmod recovery with the spectrum. I just want to make sure I can get back to stock before ics releases. It would be pretty stupid to screw my myself out of ics haha

I'm really hoping that the price of the Spec will drop significantly due to the upcoming release of the GSIII, which will stir up the dev community for us. 2 Rom's just aint cutting it!

Be sure to do a nandroid of your stock bloated rom before doing anything. Cwm is fine, just be sure to find the newest release of the touch version. Also DO NOT use rom manager to flash cwm or any cwm functions as our version is not yet supported by koush. It has been manually ported from the Nitro by Neph. You will need a stock recovery to onstall ota's. Currently they will just cause you to go into cwm bootloop. There is a zip to get out of it though. Also i wouldnt sweat too bad being able to take the ICS ota as im sure shortly after once root is obtained a flashable nandroid will become available. Neph has provided one for v4 v5 and v6 thus far. Happy flashing and enjoy this phone!

The phone is easy to brick, but not really when just rooting. If you use the All in One posted at Android forums you will be fine. The big thing ist o be careful what you change or delete once rooted.

As far the link for v4 recovery you are good there. Neph does great work and thoroughly tests all his work. Many people have used that process to return to stock with great success.

If you have any issues or questions on the process just ask. Be sure when rooting your phone connection mode is internet/ ethernet and debugging is enabled.

Okay I may root when I get some time or i may just wait for ics because by that time this phone may have gotten some more dev support and we will get some more roms. I'm looking forward to cm9. Thank you. And how is this phone easy to brick? What makes it easier to brick than other phones?

They are referring to soft bricks. It's very easy to remove a file that seems innocent, but will throw you into a boot loop. So far, the only way to true hard brick your phone is to mess up partition 7 on the phone. As long as that partition is still in one piece, download mode is accessible and you can restore your phone to stock, or at the very least, to a useable point to fix anything else you broke.

That's what I hoped. I don't consider bootloops and other "soft bricks" legitimate bricks. Is there any way to backup even partition 7 or any other partition and just rewrite it from a computer if you mess it up? Just wondering I'm not that paranoid haha.

At this point, no. I have not found a way to access NV directly. I do how ever, recommend making a DD image of every partition and storing it some where safe if you do decide to tinker. As we found out with the ICS leak, files like the radio are hidden on partitions not backed up by nandroid and having a backup in case of issues is always useful.

Thanks for the tip. I am definitely going to be cautious and backup everything possible before I do any serious tinkering. I don't have the luxury of multiple smartphones yet.

Haha i could do that or I could just wait for my upgrade next spring. It's not stopping me from rooting anyway.
