LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

Just FYI, LG always rolls out new freebies once the current promotion ends. So on the 21st its likely going to be a free battery and charging cradle, or the $100 amex gift card they did earlier this year.
Personally I would hope its the $100 amex card over the headphones.

I could actually use a really good set of earphones, but this is still great to know...

I'd prefer the battery

I wish current owners could double dip lol

I wish I knew the answer to that... Verizon won't tell me. The only one that can probably tell you for sure is LG. You might want to try there. If you do find out, please let me know.

It should be ILLEGAL to refuse to tell you when you ask questions like this!!!

Will FM radio work on the unlocked version on any major carrier? Will it work on just Verizon? What about some of the smaller carriers? It should not be this hard to get an answer.

Personally, I've heard that overseas, carriers don't have any say in what works or not on a phone. It's all set by the manufacturer. That's how it should be here. The manufacturer builds a phone and every carrier supports every feature - done. It kind of answers for me just WHY the USA doesn't get phones as good as the rest of the world... OH! you didn't hear about the waterproof LG v34? That's my point...
That's because Europe has strong consumer protection laws, while the USA doesn't. Don't count on that changing any time soon.

As for the radio, I spoke with VZW exec relations and they said all of that is on LG's end. So who even knows?

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

There has to be something illegal about this practice.

Unethical, yes. Illegal, no. I spent several months with Verizon over missing security patches (more than 300 of them). Every carrier, worldwide, supplied these except Verizon. I went to the FCC, FTC, my stat's Attorney General, and even the VP of Verizon Wireless. The bottom line is that they aren't breaking any laws or regulations so there is nothing that we as consumers can really do.

You can't even do a class action suit since you signed that right away in your contract!

That said, I was able to rally other users of the phone to submit complaints to the FCC and to reopen them whenever Verizon closed them. With thousands of open FCC complaints on this topic, they capitulated and produced the patches.

They didn't move fast enough for many of us and as soon as our contracts expired we moved to a different carrier but for those that stayed it was a big win.

Hi Juliesdroid, thanks for the update! I've been following this issue for weeks now. This phone and it's capabilities has proven to be elusive. I agree with you 100%, Verizon needs to stop toying with with these phone and stop acting as if the customer is getting all the features advertised by LG! Most people are unaware as to what there buying and assume there getting the complete package.
Well good luck and keep on the hunt! Some of us if not all appreciate the leg work you've put in, Thanks.

I think it goes beyond unethical. I don't buy my phones subsidized so in essence I should get the product that purchased as produced by LG and not as canabilized by Verizon. They have no right to disable a feature that does not interfere with their network. I actually owned a phone that had FM removed after I already had it.
For me....it doesn't matter that much because I don't listen that much to FM, but I should have the ability as needed.

Yes, which is why I'm going to be quite annoyed when my UN-locked model still doesn't have FM radio... (Since you told me I can still get in on the earphones offer, I'm just waiting for the phone to be delivered tomorrow, and am not sending it back - thanks again on that!)

But, I feel like LG is much more likely to push an update on an unlocked version than on the Verizon version...

When I get the phone, I'm going to update this post - http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg-v20/739290-what-has-verizon-taken-away-v20.html with the most comprehensive list I can come up with, comparing the unlocked model with Verizon vs. the Verizon model on Verizon... (might even be better to create a new post and ask AT&T, Sprint users to chime in for comparison.)

I'm with you... I cannot imagine the justification of LG to "not enable" FM radio on an unlocked version. As much as I'm trying to like this phone, and I really am, it may be that with Verizon there are just too many compromises for me personally, unlocked or their version.

I might just go crazy and add another line for the unlocked version and then make an "open video" (kind of like writing an open letter... but not... it's a video!) on Youtube for LG & Verizon & the FCC and whoever else cares comparing the two... I won't take the illegal angle because I'm sure their attorneys who are smarter than me have got all the bases covered. I'm going to take the approach to quit lying to your customers, quit pointing fingers at each other, and give people what they pay for... all of it!

Sadly they do have the right... But as the old saying goes just because you can doesn't mean you should.

AT&T back in the day hid the download booster on Samsung phones since they didn't like it. Sadly if the manufacturers work with the carriers on their demand then.. They can do it.

On the terms and conditions of the headphones offer, you have until Dec 9th to submit your info. Which makes sense, because they wouldnt expect someone buying the phone tonight to rush home to submit everything online.

Yes, I was confused by the wording that "the offer is good through 11/20", so I had to click to redeem to read more.

Heck, if LG wants to charge extra for fm radio and han offer it as a paid app in playstore! Very few would care but I'd pay $20 for it. Trouble is if left to VZW they would want $20 a MONTH for it!

I'm still more pissed about the In Apps shortcut than radio. It cost nothing to implement the shortcut. Google ships the software with it, and they go out of there way to take it away.

As far as I'm concerned they don't but since this isn't a big issue for me and I like Verizon because I've always had good service and support I stick with them. They once gave a brand new phone because an almost 2 year old phone bricked on me after update. I was 2 months away from an upgrade and they gave me a brand new replacement phone...actually newer model.

Well yeah in your opinion no -- but if we are talking legal ways then yes they can. I was more going towards the 2nd.

The funny thing about legal is that its legal until its declared illegal.... All it takes is a good lawyer and a sympathetic ear but that's a whole another story and loss of FM is not a worthy enough battle to fight.

True -- but I doubt them selling you their version that they modified with help from the people who made the phone would be proven illegal. If they did it without the help from LG that would be another story.

Really? Remember the lawsuit about Bluetooth being removed by Blackberry at the request of Verizon? Verizon was found guilty weren't they? And wasn't that when they started playing with words and letting carriers either buy into or not buy into certain features so it could not legally be considered disabling? Or am I drastically oversimplifying something much more complicated...?

The loss of FM radio is probably not enough standing by itself... It's all of it that bothers me... I believe that every phone put into the hands of every consumer should have everything working that is advertised by the manufacturer. End of story. FM radio, in my opinion, is also a safety issue , but I just don't like the deceptiveness of it all. I don't like that even when you do figure out what the right questions are to ask that they still refuse , flat-out refuse, to give you clear answers. That's wrong. And I agree it's the kind of thing that can go from being legal to illegal if someone was to push it.
