LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

I doubt it. Who has the $ to take them to court over it?

I love when David stands up to Goliath but I'm no good with a sling. Hope somebody here is.

And I doubt it is illegal and yet they have been doing it for years without so much as even a hint of a lawsuit or something on it :).

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

I don't think there's anything illegal about Verizon asking LG to disable FM radio on the Verizon LG V20.

and... that's what Verizon thought about asking BB to disable Bluetooth... that's the point; they now get to play with words so instead of asking a manufacturer to disable something, they choose not to buy into a non-standard feature. The customer gets the short end either way, but one way is legal and the other way is not... <sigh>

The bluetooth thing though was back in 2005 -- It is a slightly different ballgame from 2016 to 2005 in the phone department. Especially since Verizon has been doing this for years when it comes to their models. If anything Verizon has opened up in the case of non-Verizon phones by allowing WiFi calling to work on them.

It still sucks they do it but they all do it to some extent .. Or well I should say have in the past. AT&T still does it but usually they like to disable software features they don't like (such as the Samsung Download Booster) so the user has to go a roundabout way to get it back. The Verizon one is just worse due to the hardware itself actually not working and I don't know if there is a root or something that could be done to get it back on.

Agreed, agreed... I am hoping someone will have a way to get this software library back into the phone somehow; at least on the unlocked version.

Try getting some traction on XDA forums. Thats where the code guys are. Although usually need to root.

Really? Remember the lawsuit about Bluetooth being removed by Blackberry at the request of Verizon? Verizon was found guilty weren't they? And wasn't that when they started playing with words and letting carriers either buy into or not buy into certain features so it could not legally be considered disabling? Or am I drastically oversimplifying something much more complicated...?

I'm sure you're right that it's legal at this time. But in spirit, I don't see it as being any different than the lawsuit that started it all which was Verizon specifically asking Blackberry to remove Bluetooth, which was deemed illegal because it was removing something that they called standard features... probably a legal construct that they created at the time to help them resolve the case... :-)

They're violating the Same Spirit of the law but getting around it by playing with words. That's all I'm saying :-)

I did a search for Blackberry, Verizon, Bluetooth, lawsuit

Here are some of the links that pulled up

People on the Verizon Forum where the first ones that told me about it. It's been a minute though. It looks like it was around 2005 that this was going on

...links to the Motorola issue.

Which is why I've been scratching my head... ..what BlackBerry bluetooth issue?

Also - Bluetooth wasn't removed. Bluetooth is made up of a stack of profiles. Verizon just asked Motorola to not include the one that basically did file transfers.

Nothing illegal about that, right?

Lawsuit settled.

In all honesty, if the lack of an FM radio on the Verizon LG V20 is an issue for you, the best thing you can do is not buy the Verizon LG V20 or any Verizon-branded phone. Actually speaking with your wallet speaks volumes.

I think you're right that it might have been ALL related to the Motorola phone not the Blackberry phone, (regardless of what I was reading on the Verizon forum); because I can't find it. let me investigate that a bit further by asking the one who posted that for me if he has a reference, and further see what I can find, too - because it seems to be relevant to the discussion.

And no, it's not just lack of an FM radio, but that plus Smart Settings removed, plus Google In Apps Search Shortcut removed. And the fact that neither LG or Verizon will tell you what they will or won't support...

Which non Verizo Phones work on WiFi calling? I tried three fairly recent ly that didnt.

Re: LG v20 -No FM Radio; A Verizon Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed

Yes, and here is my *theory* why... Most people I know, myself included, turn off their wifi when they leave their house. I don't want the popups, and I don't connect to wifi networks outside my home, typically. (or bluetooth). So you can use the "Away From Home" setting to turn off your wifi when you leave...

You can then use the "At Home" setting to turn your wifi back on when you get home and you'll automatically reconnect...

So why would Big Red not want you to have that? Hmmm.... if you have to do it manually, you may forget... then, you'll use more of that Verizon data, won't you?
If you want the features of smart settings, you can use IFTTT app to turn off wifi when you leave a certain area using GPS. I've used it in the past and it works great. You can also set it to silence your phone when you enter or leave a certain area as well. I eventually just uninstalled the app because I like to turn those things off and on myself.

5X / 6P / Pixel / etc.

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

I have read enough post in this thread about Verizon that I would never buy or activate a phone through them ever. I do NOT want a wireless provider shutting off any of my high end features that I paid for...... ......

5X and 6P did not work for me just prior to the V20 coming out

Might have been with the Nougat update.

Exactly... I respect everyone's opinion, but personally I am surprised the number of people who really think this practice is OK, and whose attitude is basically, "Just buy another phone, we like that they made it cheaper by not doing xxxx".

Where is the premium phone for the premium phone market? I didn't blink at the 869 retail price of the Note 7. (I should blink. It's one of those things I really can't afford, but do anyway to be honest.)

<snip>

still looking; gentleman on the Verizon forum who posted this also looking... he tells me,

"Yes there were one for the V710, but there was one for Blackberry where it had Bluetooth and it was later removed in an update. There was a lot of hoopla about it. Since recent things happening with BB, and Verizon including other lawsuits it's probably buried at 100+ pages. I will see if I can find it."

I'm not sure what he means "buried at 100+ pages"... maybe some legal transcript, but anyway still looking because I would really like to know just exactly how we got into this screwed up system of carriers buying in or not to all these different features, and then it is all OK and all legal as long as somewhere in the fine print it is stated "features may vary by carrier" or some other such nonsense...

We went down a wrong path somewhere... especially when you don't see this kind of thing overseas (supposedly, anyway?) but they do seem to have better phones than what we're offered... like the LG v34... the waterproof version... or S7 Edges with more than 32GB... not available here, though.

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

Yes, it currently works on my Note 7 on Verizon... what an irony considering Verizon is forcing me to return it... you know, for my "safety"... <sigh>

Most definitely. Another thing to consider...the Note 7 is done. You're not going to be getting any future updates and what are you going to do when Sammy sends the "kill" code to the phone? Do you want to keep using an obsolete phone and miss out on any deals being handed out now? So you just keep on playing with fire, pun intended, and when it stops working next week, next month, and nobody is offering any discounts on replacing it, you'll be stuck forking out several hundred dollars for a new phone.

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

I told her the reason I wanted to know was so Maybe I could go get an unlocked model and try to bring it back to Verizon and see if it would work

When looking at "unlocked" cellphones, those are typically GSM phones that do not have CDMA capabilities in them. Yes, Verizon's phones are unlocked that can be used on GSM networks, but typically the term "unlocked" refers to a GSM phone that can be used on multiple GSM carriers.

Re: LG v20 - No FM Radio; A Verizon "Get The Runaround" Special! Help Me if You're Annoyed, too.

The other thing I really object to is paying full price for a 7 month old phone. If you didn't know, ALL new devices on a new Verizon payment plan must be paid off 100% before you can upgrade again... Yes, that's right. The Edge up program is totally gone. It was 50%, then went to 60% I believe, but now is 100%. So, I'll pay 100% of the price of the S7 Edge. Sammy will give me $100 loyalty credit, and there will be another $25 credit for turning in my Note 7. So, $125 off for a 7 month old phone is not enough under these circumstances, IMO.

The other choices? <sound of crickets chirping...>

Verizon's Black Friday deal has the S7 for $10/mn for 24 mnths. That's the deal I'm going for. I know it's not the Edge, but heck, I'm like you, I like the coverage Vzw offers me and I'm not planning on switching carriers. $240 is a heck of a deal for this phone.
