With all the zvh flaws, and than adding in the radio mismatch, it seems like running a zvh ROM on zvj would be like going from having a live hippo in your basement to having a dead hippo basement.

LOL. Alright, who wants to start the "Save the Hippos Fund" to get ROMs ported to ZVJ when it drops? :-$

I now fully expect Save the Hippos branding and logos on all the ROM threads, as well as an optional hippopotamus-based bootanimation for each ZVJ ROM.

Can he take it into a sprint store after that day and get the upgrade?

Not sure when your local store will get the update capabilities, even though I would expect it to be in advance of the OTA release date. You'll have better chances if you go to a Sprint corporate store and not one of the numerous resellers out there that are a "Sprint Store by...."

As long as the ESN is clean, he should have no issues activating it, especially given it being in a stock state, presumably with the stock recovery as well.

Honestly, we dont yet know! No one has yet recieved it. At the least restoring stock recovery should be a minimum before flashing any zvj update.zip

You might be able to flash on a stock (non-CM) ROM, but having a custom recovery may be a problem.

Just a reminder to everyone out there, be patient with these baseband updates. The devs know what they're doing. Let them dip their toes in the ZVJ water to figure out the right upgrade path, how to root, etc.

Remember, even if you return to stock ZVD (I'm assuming this will upgrade from stock ZVH as well) and OTA when it drops, you could easily be stuck if the devs can't find a proper root method! Let them work their Opti S magic first.

Also, if you're on one of the CM ROMs, you'll almost assuredly not get the OTA notification, so don't be confused by that.

Once this update really starts to roll out, it'll probably be up to some daring soul to try HydroROM on it.

There was some success with using ROMs between earlier basebands (ZV9, ZVC, ZVD) if I remember correctly, and there may not be too many issues here considering ZVJ is likely ZVH with a new radio and some minor updates. I love Kraven's CM7, but the option to go to a stock ROM with the new baked in fixes (charging, volume, etc.) would be really nice too.

Until someone gets the update (either .zip or OTA) and plays around with it, we really are in the dark about root. sfhub's sticky on rooting ZVD/ZVH could work with ZVJ as well for all we know at this point.

It should be. check your download folder. as long as they dont erase it automatically on reboot.

the one through lg updater will probably suffice though. i dont think that will be available until 4/4 though

You might be able to use the ota rootkeeper app from the market.
