you renamed the recovery file "recovery.img" correct?

if so, try it this way

./fastboot boot recovery.img


if not, rename the file "recovery.img" instead of recovery-5.8.whatever-toro.img
then do it like this:
./fastboot boot recovery recovery.img

it just keeps telling me that it 'is a directory' doesn't do anything to my phone. i'm starting to go a little insane

enter this command and see if it brings anything up -

adb devices

just to be clear here. the folder you downloaded from the OP is on the desktop. you have renamed this folder 'adb-fastboot'
You have successfully unlocked the bootloader (it now shows an unlock when you boot on your device normally).
And your phone is in fastboot/bootloader mode when you enter the commands you need.

I ask because all the files you need are in that folder, and it should work.
It sounds like you might not have unlocked the bootloader. Or something's out of place.

yes, there is clearly an unlocked lock on my screen, and all that stuff is in a folder on my desktop.

OK I got a go but here's what I think you should do. Reboot phone by using volume keys to power off. Then restart your CPU. Then try again following either the directions in op or the recovery method I typed up.

You have what you need but not sure why its not working. If you can't get it.going I'll be back tomorrow morning but I gotta go to the girls house and she's impatient .

a few pages back theres a one click for mac. i cant search for ya but there is a one click for mac listed in a post in this thread you can try

If youre rooted you must have an unlocked boot.
Is there an open lock on the Google screen when u turn the phone on?

I followed the steps, unlocked bootloader successfully, thought root was completed as I have superuser installed but... rom manager wont allow me to flash recovery and titanium backup says, "Sorry I could not acquire root privileges."

yeah replace the old superuser zip with the su that works with 404:
