Brand new Nexus 5 (not a refurb, not 5X). Works perfectly running KK 4.4.4, but giving me a weird issue when running any 6.x.x version. On occasion, maybe 4 in 10 times, when I unlock the phone, the launcher is unresponsive.

- notification shade still works
- power button still works
- navbar still works
- all launcher icons are unresponsive, can't swipe to new page, no launcher functions work
- problem has occurred using Google Now launcher, Nova Launcher, Arrow Launcher, and CM Launcher. Doesn't seem to be a launcher bug.

I've searched high and low but haven't seen anything indicating that this is a known problem. Any suggestions on how to identify the cause of this?

Welcome to Android Central! First, try a cache partition wipe: http://forums.androidcentral.com/nexus-5-rooting-roms-hacks/352008-guide-nexus-5-recovery.html. This can take up to 5-10 minutes on a Nexus 5, so be patient.

If that doesn't help, try booting into Safe Mode, which temporarily disables all 3rd party apps. https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en

If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, then something you installed is causing the problem. You may have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem disappears. If the problem persists in Safe Mode, then it's more likely to be a hardware or firmware problem.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually done multiple full wipes of the phone, switching between Kitkat and Marshmallow (both stock roms), with a full wipe before each flash. I consistently see this behavior on a clean Marshmallow flash. With NO non-stock apps installed I still see this launcher (Google Now) freeze.

Just to affirm that it's possible ... I am running the most current stock MM, using Apex launcher, with no issues.

Same here, running 6.0 on a Moto X pure, rooted (duh), with Nova, Google launcher and a few apps (Dropbox, Sky map, Facebook lite, Tasker, Torque, Whatsapp, etc).
Nav buttons and notification area work, I can slide down the shade, dismiss notifications all over the screen, change quick settings and tap the gear to bring up main settings but not change anything there. Tried to assign the home button (which works) to a Tasker task that kills the launcher and beeps, it seems to do it but the screen remains unresponsive except for the nav buttons and the notifications until I reboot the phone.
I just tried installing some random launcher from the web Play store to force the phone to ask me which launcher to use when touching the home button. It did ask but did not react when I touched the new launcher (or Google or Nova, for that matter).

I know this is an old post but was wondering if anybody came up with a solution, I have the same problem. Screen "freezes" is totally non responsive, yet I can click the nav bar, have the notification pull down full screen and can select anywhere on that screen. Send the pull down back up and the screen is non responsive anywhere, except at the status bar. weird
