My source, who knows a motorola rep testing a bionic told me that they are still working out a bunch of software issues. He said every morning when he turns the bionic on, he has to turn the wifi on (assuming not in a 4g area) and download massive updates.

He said every morning and sometimes 2 or 3 times throughout the day.

No I dont have any "proof" and I havent seen the device itself, this is something that I found interesting and is just for sake of conversation.

but Jha just said a couple days ago that the Bionic was ready to be shipped, and that the hold up was on VZW's end - and Jha never lies! :p

They should just unlock the bootloader and let the real developers in the community fix it up.

I would believe that the Bionic is getting worked on a quite a lot, but if it's coming out in September, they're going to start shutting down work on it, they have to manufacture the phone, which isn't done in a day. They'll obviously have a certain amount they'll make for launch, which is usually quite a lot, so I'm pretty sure that at least soon they'll just say no more updates and finish squashing bugs over the air when people get the thing.
I'm hoping it will either come with or get soon an unlocked bootloader. If they don't, well I guess we'll have to wait on some modders to root it. Guessing they'll do it quicker than usual since this will be a popular phone.

Hardware is set and phones have been manufactured. The only thing they could be doing at this point is polishing the software. Updated software can be handled via OTA or other process at point of sale if it has to be.

Basically what I said lol. Just a lot shorter.
I think we'll see an update for the Bionic for some bugs before ICS. Then more updates lol.

sounds very promising in my mind. I can see why people would look at this as a bad thing, but I see it as a good thing. As others have said, software is an ongoing thing, and by now if the September release date is accurate then the hardware is set and the manufacturing process has already begun. If that's the case, then I would say the speculated release date is made even more realistic by this update.

If Moto is dumping that many resources into debugging then I think its safe to assume its because its really getting down to the wire and they want to get things as bug-free before release. 2-3 times per day? My guess is the team working on software is probably being pushed pretty hard to make this happen.

As a few other posts (in other threads) have mentioned, companies like Moto quite literally have teams of people who monitor forums and public opinions. If they have been reading ANY forums at all, they will know that people are getting frustrated by the lack of details, and if they want to make the anticipation work to their advantage they better not wait to much longer.

That, and they have to beat the iPhone to the market as plenty of others have noted.

Who knows... I could be wrong

Beating the iPhone to the market is pretty irrelevant. Most people who want an Android phone will get it over an iPhone no matter what, and visa versa. Anyone here at least is not going to buy an iPhone.

Well to be completely honest, communities like this one make up an incredibly small portion of the target market. Lots of people just look at stats/specs, price, and aesthetics and as much as I don't like Apple they do make a nice looking product.

Even though we (as a community) are highly unlikely to go iPhone over Android, many people wouldn't care if the iPhone was a better product

A lot of people already have a preference for either iOS or Android and very few will be swayed to change.

Those that have no preference and are new to smartphones are probably more likely to be swayed by the salesperson they get versus specs.

When android was new I had no clue what it was. I ended up buying a crappy windows mobile 6.1 smartphone which wasn't too smart. Stylus pen are you kidding me. Not much was finger friendly and the market place was a complete joke. You had pay for vzw navigator or pay $100 for a crappy garmin app. There was google maps but it wasn't good and didn't have nav.

Welcome to the wonders of Microsoft right? I love Microsoft, but their products are always lagging behind now. Except Windows, of course. Still needs work, but they are doing it

Ditto. I think when I originally got a Samsung Saga (WinMo 6.1), the original G1 was just on the horizon and VZW didn't have an Android phone coming that I was aware of or knew anything about. Thought 'hey, it's a MS product, ought to be good, right?!?' Yeah, regretting that choice.....hardware couldn't handle the software (at least that's my assumption) and it was finally replaced after 3 returns during warranty and Verizon begrudgingly offered me a HTC Touch Pro2 (did at least get upgraded to WinMo 6.5) as a replacement (and a new 2 yr extension...yeah, got hosed there) so I've been waiting close to 3 years now to get a taste of Android. Now I just hope the Bionic turns out to be the beast we all thought it was going to be originally! :D

That doesn't seem like a good sign if this late into the game they are still having large issues that everyday they have to install a new update. Maybe I am wrong and they are just doing something to give it that little extra but with moto I think it could be the other way. I just hope it doesn't turn out like the thunderbolt did with all its issues post launch. Also I am sure they are working to lock down this thing as much as they can.

Not really. When you're in a final development and QA push it's normal to do quite a few pushes near the end. The thing is you can't just push patches, they push the entire ROM. So unless the people are in QA they don't know specifically what and why unless each update has a changelog.

And don't forget the constant regression testing.
