Micro SD keeps unmounting itself

Hi there, new to the forum so unsure of how much detail may help.

Basically my LG G3 is running lollipop but for the past month, the sd card keeps randomly unmounting then re-mounting itself. Whenever i attempt to access anything on the card, it immediately unmounts itself.

I've tried the following:

- Format SD card and copy over old data; no effect.
- Purchase new SD card and copy over old data; new card still unmounts itself.
- Checked SD slot for obstructions/damage; none noted.

Does anybody have any idea what is causing this issue/possible solutions? I've checked and all apps are stored on the internal memory only so also rules this issue out.

I'd rather not factory reset the phone unless its the only alternative!

Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue with my 64gb SD card for my G4.
How I resolved it:
1- Insert the card directly through you windows PC via SD Card adapter.
2- Go through my computer left click the external storage corresponding to your card and click format, now uncheck the quick format, this will take quite longer depending on your PC.
3- insert the card into your phone and go to storage settings and select erase all data from the card.
4- This will result in the device formatting the card and putting the corresponding directory for Android.
5- Once all the previous steps have been completed, you can start putting media back on your device.

Let me know if it works for you.
Going about 2 weeks now and not once has my card unmounted itself.

If you want to know if the card has unmounted unexpectedly when you weren't using the phone, open the camera app and if it asks again to save photos to SD card, it means that the card was removed and recently inserted.

Cheers for the reply Jon. I'll give this a go once I get home and provide a further update.

Hopefully it works!

I tried your suggestion last night. It seemed fine but has just unmounted itself again. Albeit its not happening every 10 seconds like before.

No idea why this keeps happening

Don't forget this step after the full format

I believe I solved my issue by naming the SD card--I remember reading somewhere that the newer versions of Android (starting with the Kitkat release) require the SD to be named for certain functions (something affecting the read/write--which also caused issues with mine mounting and unmounting all the time). After I reformatted and named it via my computer, everything worked fine.

I named mine ANDROID to keep it easy to recognize, but I don't think what you name it affects it. I will try to find a link about it to share more info, but as I recall this worked for me.

Update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/general/howto-read-write-sd-card-lollipop-t3014838 This link talks about the Nvidia shield, but the 4 steps listed are essentially what you could do (I haven't tried doing it without reformatting, since my card was already blank from the earlier attempts, but you can see if that works first).

FYI reformatting alone it did nothing but delete my data--the unmounting kept happening until I named it too.

Jon, I did do this too before copying over some old data, but unfortunately it's made little effect!

Thanks demon09, i'll give this a go when i get home later. Just to clarify, will i need to do a quick format or untick this option when formatting?

I don't recall having to undo that option, but for safe measure you could just do a full format with a new name just to be sure. Again, it will take longer, but at least you won't need to redo it later if it was a requirement. You could also just try the quick format and rename just to see if it helps at all then decide later to do a full format if it doesn't work, really just a matter of how much time you want to spend on this.

I did mine a few months back and think I did quick format, but honestly don't remember that well, but looking at my SD card on the phone now I definitely named it and haven't had any issues since then.

Unfortunately not. I've tried all suggestions but the damn thing keeps unmounting itself!

Do you think a factory reset may work? I'm lost for any other options. If that doesn't work then i'll just have to get a new phone

Before shelling out more cash for a new device, try the factory data reset to see if it solves your issue.

Or new sd card. It sounds like a faulty card or it got damaged or reformatted over and over. SD cards have a life span. Mine usually last a while but ive also had a SanDisk 8GB card that would work after I had photos on it for about 2 months then backed up photos, format the card once to reuse and could not store anything on it

i had the same issues with my G3 and my L90. They would not except a 64 gm samsung card. after doing everying you did I put the card in my note 8 and have zero issues. Put it back in my G3 went back and did the same thing. I guess my LG just did not like the Samsung Pro card.

The common denominator is either the G3 or the Android OS. IT IS NOT THE CARD. I have tried numerous cards new and old. It is not the card. Most people's problems occured after an update of the software not an update of the card. Things don't just happen. Think about the last thing that happened before the card started to act up. That's the culprit. If we come together and share what date it may have happened or after what As a united front we can do something. Similar to XBox denying the ring of death issues and saying they were less than 2% devices affected. Also since the update my phone runs hotter and it seems the heat is around where the sd card/sim card is mounted. I also had a few minor issues where it would say INVALID Sim but resolved that issue. It is either LG or GOOGLE. I have tried Sony SD cards, Samsung SD Cards, Kingston and etc.

Youbdont have it pushedbib fully

Same issue here. I've been just too damn busy to deal with it until now. I had a Samsung 32gb card in my G3 that worked perfectly, but after an update this spring it started this unmount garbage. I bought another card which is in the phone now, but same deal with the unmount. I haven't tried reformatting or anything else yet, but will when I get back to my office. I think I'll try the renaming thing first. I like my G3 and don't want to get rid of it just because the phone Gods have decided I need to shell out more money to them for an upgrade.

Have tried what jon440 said but still with no joy, problem started 4 nights ago, even had a new sim/micro sd unit fitted in my LG G3 - have tried everything, formatting card, factory reset phone & now I'm going mad - please can any 1 help? Have been onto EE & phone is suppose to be going away for repair - I'm at my wit's end with this fault & feel like pulling my hair out 😢

Hey, I'm having the same issue. I've tried the factory reset and it does not work, so I'm guessing it's probably a hardware issue. Please keep us posted if you actually solve it without changing the part.
