Moto X (2nd gen) XT1095 Pure Edition/T-Mobile: Lollipop 5.1 Update

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

I am late to the party I know but thought I would share. I got my moto 2014 Tuesday and of course it had 5.0 on it. Now I will state up front I HATE lollipop for a variety of reasons but for me the dealbreaker was my otg thumbdrive wont work on 5.0. Works fine on 444, yes I am on 444 now. Without getting to technical you CAN downgrade to 444 without causing yourself later issues IF AND ONLY IF the ONLY parts you downgrade are system and boot.

Just in case you didnt see it ONLY CHANGE BOOT AND SYSTEM (system.img and boot.img)

NEVER EVER EVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MESS WITH THE BOOTLOADER OR GPT FILES!!!!!!

I mention this as for those of you with major 5.0 woes this may be a pretty decent workaround

Thanks for the info. Then again, I'm not really looking for a workaround at this point, especially one that involves me doing anything that may remotely void what warranty I have left. Not that Motorola has been good at all about handling warranty issues (I thought my husband's experience was bad, but if you Google that, seriously... some of the stories are downright horrifying).

I'm giving Moto until the end of May to push the update they've been soak testing since March. If they don't, I'm going to pick up another phone to use until there's actually a phone worth buying on the market. 2 months of soak testing & no update? And despite pushing updates to other phones and models, there has been nothing said on the status of 5.1 for the PE. Everyone is assuming the update is imminent, but that's been the case for almost a month now. At this point, I despise Lenovo and want to be rid of their cost-cutting ways and no-longer-important-enough last-year's-model phone as soon as possible.

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

zero i tend to agree with you. I have a 2014 moto x pure edition I purchased from ebay used to replace my gen 1 moto x. Both phones have seen no updates since i swapped to the new 2014 2 1/2 months ago. I just read a comment on the xda dev forum from a user saying motorolla is a different place now that google is not throwing money at them and lenovo is in charge and more frugal with funds and updates are not the focus. This is obviously just a rumor and not fact but if true then I feel that moto will loose me when my contract is up in october. Sadly it will probably be to the next Nexus phone or back to iphone. I am still hoping they prove me wrong.

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

From a purely academic standpoint, I wonder what is keeping Moto from pushing 5.1.

I imagine many things play into a software update but it seems like things are taking a long time or at least a seemingly longer time than previous Moto updates.

Obviously, I want the best software experience as possible and if the wait yields a good experience, I am fine to wait, but I wish Moto wouldn't post a changelog and then not push the OTA, that just annoys customers or at least annoys me.

This is my first (and last) experimental move from a Nexus, one I am regretting somewhat. I just hope the next Nexus is 5.2 or 5.5 inches.

One really has to wonder what kind of impact being purchased by Lenovo has had. When Motorola was owned by Google, updates were released at a fast consistent pace.

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

I'm all for waiting for something stable to be available. But that time has long passed, IMHO. Moto has been soak testing this update since March, and they don't have something stable yet? I'm supposed to believe this? They pushed 5.1 to the Moto E 2015. They pushed a 5.1 update to users in Brazil of the 2014 Moto X. They are promising 2013 X owners a 5.1 update within "weeks". I'm just so so very tired of promises & excuses. The Pure Edition phone is their current flagship (but why do I get the feeling it's already being dumped for the rumored 2015 Moto X?). The PE should get updates before ANY carrier-branded model.

I'm done with Motorola after this. I'm hoping for a better quality Nexus device in the 5 to 5.3 inch range than the Nexus 5 is/was, though. The short time I spent with a Nexus 5 (mine had a power button that rattled horribly) didn't give me a great impression. Signal strength issues & iffy build quality. I'd rather pay more for a well-built phone than get a cheaply made one with flagship specs.

The Zenfone 2, though, is tempting me as a holdover. But, I have a bad feeling I'd hate the power button placement on it. And of course, many more months of Android 5.0, arguably the worst version of android Google has ever made. Tap-to-wake, though.... *sigh* 'tis a bad time to hate your phone. :-\

Seems bad to me. Moto X 2013 experience was good when I had it until I traded it in on moto x 2014 when it came out. 2014 has not been the same experience. The phone is built beautifully, I will give them that, and overall it is a good phone.

I think that whatever guiding hands Google had in motorola to help them, have been replaced by Lenovo hands and it is taking a downward turn. I was in the original 5.0 pure edition soak test last fall and the management and communication during it left a lot to be desired. It is disappointing. Even at this time in the Moto X 2013 life cycle last year I would have called it the best phone on the market, except for the average camera. At this point I just don't know if I will trust them for a 3rd go round.

Just got email telling me that I'm getting soak test update soon

This could be good news, and it could mean bad news.... It might be good that they found and are correcting issues with the first soak test version... and it could be bad in the fact that it took this LONG to test the first version and how long will it take to test this version.

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

any camera improvements? or more of the same?

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

If you aren't getting the update yet, don't despair. This is probably why:

https://plus.google.com/+DavidSchuster/posts/7gyi8NQZTZB

(If you don't care to read the above link -- It's still a soak test, folks.) As per my earlier comments in this thread -- the invites for the soak test on the PE went out almost 3 months ago (early March). If this is the first deployment of that test -- phones will change hands in 3 months time, but the IMEI numbers used to push the test don't change. That's my guess as to why people who say they aren't in the test are getting the update.

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

I bought my XT1095 directly from Moto brand new. I never signed up for the Motorola Feedback Network, and I got the OTA, so I am pretty sure this is the final OTA and it is just rolling out in stages.

Edit:
Actually, from that google+ post, it seems this is indeed the soak test. I think this is distributed to a random bunch of people who didn't sign up for the MFN. Those who signed up for the MFN were probably eligible to get the TestDrive builds. So, the final OTA that they are testing on a few of us right now will probably fully deploy in a few days.

It's either that or someone forgot to tell Schuster what's really happening!

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?

I got a system update today it's just a different build of 5.0 though according to 'about phone'

Re: Moto X (2nd gen): Is 5.1 available for the pure edition?
