Moto X - How well do you think it's selling?

I hope they are selling well! With the shortage in supplies it looks like its doing better than they had thought maybe?

Selling a product without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know you're doing it, but nobody else does. This is moto's biggests problem. There are Samsung ads everywhere, there are htc ads everywhere but never moto. the x has some great features and would make a great tv ad but we never see it.

I was siting having a coffee yesterday and waved a call away with my hand. The Woman next too me said - is that the new samsung phone? Nope it's a motorola x. Oh. Never heard of that....

I still wouldn't count out Samsung. Jerry brought up a good point in regards to Samsung sales on the podcast. A lot of regular consumers still have the S4 and unlike us tech enthusiasts, they tend to stay on a 2 year device cycle. We won't be able to really see if Samsung is in a tough situation till the S6.

In regards to the new Moto X, I don't think it's selling well especially due to the lack of advertising I've seen for it and the stiff competition it faces. If last year's X is any indication, if it isn't selling well then sales could be popping up to move more product.

Plus the LG you posted with cost the same, has a removable battery and SD card support, better camera results and a higher resolution screen. For the same price off contract. Its not the smoothest phone but its def top three. I had to go with customization over all that. And I am more than enthusiastic about my decision.

I think motos $99 on contract price will attract attention from the masses. Anecdotally my mother in law won't pay $199 for a new phone, she usually gets "whatever is free" even though she wants a newly released phone. I think I can talk her into the new Moto x vs a LG g2 or gs4. She will never buy a LG g3 or gs5 though.

I sent my dad into the Verizon store to look at the Moto X and the M8 and the store rep told him that the Samsung Galaxy phones are much more reliable and that more people liked them...they clearly either are ignorant or they push whichever phone Verizon tells them to. I kinda want to go into the store and act ignorant and see what they tell me.

My son and I were looking at phones since he is up for a new one. He has been Apple for the four years he has had a phone and was looking mostly at the 6 plus. He saw the new Moto X and fell for it. Apparently Clash of Clans letting him send his came to an android phone was what opened his mind. Now he is excited about getting a new Moto X for Xmas from Moto Maker. Pure Edition since AT&T only sells the 16 gig. That I think is hurting them. Also Demo software makes the phones almost unusable. Why not throw a few games on phones for kids to try out as well. iPhone will probably because there is no demo software.

I convinced two people to get the Moto X while looking in the store. One got the version there and the other went to Moto Maker. Pulling my 2013 Moto X out of my pocket and showing the time without touching the screen and explaining why that is the best thing ever did it. Also explain the new touchless options on the new Moto X that do not work because of Demo Software helped too.

It is? It seemed to me to be very well received. Obviously it didn't top sales charts, but no one ever actually forecasted that it would. It's not meant to be an "iPhone killer" at BGR or the Verge. It was meant to take a different approach and be another option that's a little different. At that goal and at being loved by the Android community it was a resounding success. Has Moto ever said anything about being disappointed in sales figures, let alone being ready to toss in the towel because it didn't sell 50,000,000 units? 50,000,000 wasn't the goal...

Why would a company publicly admit something is a failure? I think Motorola's marketing strategy is pretty poor but I doubt they'd be that dumb.

I have no Idea what Motorola's original sales goal was, but it stands to reason that its goal was NOT to shut down the Texas plant a year after it was open. That's a huge clue to me that Motorola's sales goal was not met. And if Google thought Motorola was success I feel certain they wouldn't have dumped it so quick.

That kind of brand advocacy takes a while to build too. There needs to be enough 'common knowledge' out there, spread by fans of the brand, so that people walk into a store knowing what they want. I dont think moto is going to win in the US overnight, but I think they can take a big enough share away from Samsung to make it worth continuing.

Hopefully with the supply issues, it is selling better than Motorola projected. Moto X is a niche market phone. Even on these forums [which are not where the average US phone buyer hangs out] there are strong differences of opinion. Biggest problem Motorola faces in the US is the way the market place is structured with the carriers driving design and price. IMHO, the US business model sucks for the consumer. Hopefully it will change over time like the land line phone business changed - any one besides me old enough to remember the days Ma Bell provided your phone in any style and color as long as you want the Bell style in black.

I hope you're right, but the question is just how much loss Lenovo is willing to accept before they start making wholesale changes.

Lenovo didn't get to where is now by supporting losers.

Well moto is a failure at advertising. This phone has so many easily marketable features, yet I have not seen a single ad. No one knows this phone exists, thus it will not sell well no matter what. It is a real shame. Sent from my XT1096

This.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law just bought/are building a new house. Closing next week. Yesterday I went to help pack. BIL & SIL are iPhone users. SIL's younger brother came over to help take down the swingset so it could be moved. Brother has had at least two phones per year in the seven years I've known him. Used an Android when everyone was using iPHone. Used a Windows phone when nobody knew what they were. He just bought a G3.

We were discussing best route for SIL from new house to her job; I thought A, she thought B, Brother thought C. I pulled out my phone to map it and see what Google said - I was wrong, Brother was right - and he asked me where I got the case (Ebony back) and when I said it was the phone he said "No $%&#. What phone?" I told him Moto X and he didn't recognize it. If he hasn't even heard of it, that's not a good sign.

Whatever the reasons are, it doesn't seem to sell well so far.

I think the imminent launch of Droid Turbo is not going to help it either, especially on Verizon.

Yeah, i'd bet even though he seems pretty tech savvy your BIL still gets most of his phone information by visiting carrier stores, like most consumers. Motorola just needs a better presence in carrier stores.

I think it's selling better than the original X, but not by much. It's not exclusive to AT&T this time, and despite people who complained about the size, the majority of consumers prefer larger size. They can sell more if they have a couple of billions to spend on TV commercials and SuperBowl and propagandas.

As for looks; it subjective I know but compare to the iPhone 6; it does not look that good!!
I think the price is right for a phone that doesn't bend and have better signal. I don't think the iPhone 6 look that good at all, it seems slippery and an ugly version of the M8, even the M7 look better. Too much bezel.

Ive seen plenty of ads for both the Moto X and the Moto G over here, i think they dont really want to compete on the US market.

Motorola is also focusing on emerging markets. Look how successful the G is, even the E. No other major mfr has been able to be as successful as Moto has been with the G and E. As long as there will be Motorola phones with the Moto Suite, I will be happy, no matter the name of the phone.

I doubt Lenovo will waste money on a phone designed for the U.S. Market (Moto X) if they aren't going to actually try to compete there. Lenovo didn't become lenovo by throwing money away.

I hope you winked at the woman in the daylight! :D This reminds me of some of the problems with Windows Phone. No one even knows about it because all you see in ads, carrier stores and big boxes (in the US, anyway) is iPhone, Samsung and a little bit of LG. I had totally written off the Moto X when announced but it seems to have a cult following and very good testimonials. I still have some hesitation due to the camera, battery and lack of SD card, but it is too bad that people don't often realize how much choice they have.

I just went into a Verizon store and played dumb. They had the new and old Moto x next to each other in the back section. I asked the rep about it and he said not to buy it because of the battery life and that he recommended the GS5. They also never heard of the Droid Turbo (they said the Droid line was going to be discontinued) and they never heard of the Sony xperia z3v.
