Moto X - How well do you think it's selling?

I just went into a Verizon store and played dumb. They had the new and old Moto x next to each other in the back section. I asked the rep about it and he said not to buy it because of the battery life and that he recommended the GS5. They also never heard of the Droid Turbo (they said the Droid line was going to be discontinued) and they never heard of the Sony xperia z3v.

Well this just proves that Verizon store reps are dumb as a box of hammers and only half as useful.

I'm planning on stopping by a Verizon store myself this afternoon after work to check out how the wood and leather backs feel (assuming they have them on display). Tempted to play dumb as well and see what the rep says, but I really don't want to waste time listening to their terrible spiels.

They push what their manager tells them too. its fun to go in and act clueless. The stuff these people will tell you is too funny. When I was looking at the G3 and was worried about the overheating issue, i had the guy at ATT tell me he's never heard of that. While we were talking i took the demo model and created the overheating alarm. I wish I had a camera for his expression. lol

Well, I remember almost all the original Moto X commercials (I didn't own one). Not one commercial for the Gen 2.
Motorola is sold and caught in limbo until the sale goes through. A horrible time to launch a product...no money is being allocated for marketing. Minimum assembly line staffing. No money to pay the carriers for a big display in there stores. All of this will leave the Moto X with not great sales but I wouldn't say they will be a bust.

Bamboo and the standard black cover only in the stores. The 61GB ones they sell direct.

Do you guys think the Moto X will sell as much as the Nexus has in the past?

Also, I went into the AT&T store when I was in the mall as well. They had the Amazon Fire Phone everywhere but they didn't even have the Moto X out on display...

I'm going to be negative nelly here. My contention is that the majority of the phone buying public does so in carrier stores when they are due for upgrades. The majority of that majority would never walk out of the store with a phone they had never heard of before and at least knew someone who had one who could help them figure it out.

That's why apple and Samsung are so successful. People know the name and know friends who have them. Consequently most people just upgrade to the same brand. They don't want to have to figure out a new phone.

I certainly agree with this. I haven't bought a phone in an AT&T store in many years because I got tired of a) salespeople who only knew how to push one or two phones - primarily the iPhone, or b) didn't have what I wanted to see on display which is the primary ongoing problem with the Moto X. I work in a medical office, where iPhones reign supreme, but when the occasional geeky doctor finds out I have an X, he always wants to see it and says how he hears great things about it. I finally saw a doctor with one the other day, albeit the 2013 model. It's almost like the Moto X has a niche market, who appreciates all it has to offer (like those of us here at AC), but the general public thinks of the Droid line when they think of Motorola. This phone desperately needs a huge marketing push, which it just isn't getting right now.

I certainly feel that it will outsell the 2013 Moto X. Many people praised that phone, but ultimately didn't buy it because they felt the screen was too small and the 720p display and the Snapdragon S4 Pro were sub-par. The 2014 model fixes ALL of that.

But as other people have said, Samsung and Apple spend huge amounts of money on advertising. How many people even know that the Moto X exists? And if they know it exists, do they know that it carries similar specs to other flagship devices?

I've been carrying around my 2013 Moto X for about 10 months now (and plan to keep it) and I have NEVER seen another person that owns one. Nor have I seen anyone with the new model, though it's still very early. That's not a good indicator of where Moto's popularity is for the average consumer.

Sadly, this is true. I've been to three Verizon Corp. Stores and one At&t store in an attempt to see the Moto X 2014 and look at the displays for Moto Maker colors and back materials that they are supposed to have? Out of those stores only Verizon, had one non working Moto X 2014. Employees, know nothing about the phone or Moto Maker, unbelievable to be sure. Verizon stores used to have better help but they have gone down badly for a long time now with I, suspect a high "churn rate" on help they hire. Nobody, knows "jack".....or they just BS you.

In my opinion, Motorola is the it's own worst enemy with it's poor marketing with this great phone. I have had the Moto X 2013, model for almost a year and really want to upgrade via Moto Maker, but I want to look at the color options etc., in person before I pay full price for the device.

Everyone I know carry's an iPhone. I know a couple Note 3, S4 and one M8 users.
What kills me is every time I ask an iPhone owner how they like there phone, nine out of 10 don't like it. I always ask them why they don't go to an android phone and the reply is the same. They are too invested in the Apple Eco system. I guess all those free fart apps are too hard to let go.

Good point. I've had my 1st Gen for almost 13 months now and I've seen exactly 1 other in the wild.

Same here, pretty much. My brother and sister have been using iPhones all along, and just upgraded to iPhone 6. Brother-in-law has been an ardent Samsung Galaxy user, but just bought the iPhone 6 Plus. My mom just got an iPhone (her first smartphone). All of my closest friends have iPhones as well. Only my dad, who couldn't care less, doesn't have an iPhone. I gave him an old HTC EVO 4G. (He thinks it's crippled because it has no buttons. That's his mindset.)

In the U.S. the iPhone is king. I'm sure it wasn't Motorola's goal to topple them. But I bet they thought they could give HTC a run for their money. We're always hearing about the dire straits that HTC finds itself in, but Motorola performed even worse...

I actually like being the only one in my crowd of friends and family that has the X. I like to be different and not follow the crowd. All I can say is that I'm glad I found a phone that is unique to my needs and wants. I can't tell you how many people ask me what phone I have. Even strangers.

They had the black and the bamboo where I went as well. I liked the feel of the bamboo. Way less slippery than my 1st gen ebony.

Yep, only bamboo and the black for me. Sad, was hoping I could check out a leather in person but oh well. Strangely enough they had four on display in two different places (a black/black and white/bamboo pair), but no sign of MotoMaker information.

Also, I went into the AT&T store when I was in the mall as well. They had the Amazon Fire Phone everywhere but they didn't even have the Moto X out on display...

Fire Phone, lol.

The last time I went into an AT&T store was back in the spring, but the Moto X and MotoMaker information was still very front and center. I was pretty impressed.

Where I live, all 3 AT&T stores are sold out. Black front shows delayed,(on moto-maker), I would assume that means they are selling out, even online. I'm sure it's not Samsung/Apple flagship volumes, but hopefully selling well.
Wish people would give this phone a try. It's such an awesome experience.
The screen is over saturated, and the camera is good, but not awesome, but this things flies.
Chrome scrolls like butter. Awesome phone.
My new one doesn't have any issues like the first one I had. Happy Happy Happy here.

I think trying to compare the sales of the Moto X to Apple and Samsung is way out of its league. Moto X isn't trying to compete with those, rather Moto X is competing with the likes of HTC, Nokia, etc. Motorola doesn't see themselves as a Samsung/apple, selling 1 or 2 high quality phones. Rather, Motorola has many different high quality phones that they sell or will sell (Droid Lineup, Shamu, Moto X) Economies of scale benefits them when looking at the combined sales, because I feel their phones sport a lot of the same power train and similar chassis. This allows them to spread some of their engineering/overhead expenses over the different models. I also believe that they will come to be known as THE company for budget phones.

As with for example cars, companies like to test their technology on higher end models (Some models companies even lose money on!), even though their budget models bring in the most profit. The budget phones can help Motorola subsidize their tech advances that they implement in the higher end models.

I believe Moto is a very strong company currently, and I hope that Lenovo does not jeopardize this by focusing on the high profit margin budget phones. It is only fair, when comparing sales, to compare the whole Moto Lineup to Samsung or Apple. But if you want to know, will everyone and their grandmother own a Moto X? No, but that is the way I like it. I like my Moto X because it is a unique phone that speaks to my image.

On a side note, I feel like the best way to see if the Moto X is gaining popularity is to look at the availability of accessories from 3rd parties. From that viewpoint, it would seem that the 2014 model is more popular than the 2013.

At my AT&T store, the Fire phone occupies its own central kiosk in the middle of the store. Not even Apple get that kind of display. It actually was the kiosk that the Moto X once had.
Really? The 99 cent Firephone gets better visiblilty then at least a dozen other better phones.

What you are describing is that the Moto X is a niche phone. I agree with that point, and I think that is exactly what the Moto X is. If that is the goal that's fine. But we keep hearing from pundits about how the Moto X should be more than a niche phone. What gives?

The Fire phone probably NEEDS that kind of publicity. Desperately. I figure they use kids in their advertising campaign, since it's probably only kids who truly want one. Nothing against Amazon - I dearly love my kindle, but I have no desire for one of their phones.
