My HTC Hero is peeling.

I wonder if there is some common hand soap, lotion or possible cleaner that people use prior to touching the device. Some cleaners will peel "foil" / paint off surfaces fairly easily, especially "oily" solvents like "orange glo" cleaner or "goo Be Gone".... ummm this really has me puzzled though. If feel bad for you guys who have this... it'd drive me nuts for sure. I would have to go with whole just peel off the entire piece and make it a solid red button.... it'd look better than the "mushroom", lol

I don't use any of those cleaners you mentioned. Just regular soap, hand soap and dish washer liquid. I have yet to take it in to a Sprint store but I'm guessing they won't do anything about it. Funny you mentioned about just peeling the entire thing. That is pretty much the conclusion I arrived to once the peeling gets out of hand.

i dont wash my hands so that doesnt apply here... :D

jk but im going in to the sprint store where i purchased the phone this weekend to ask for a replacement

Perhaps cutting a screen protector to fit the Menu/Home/Search/Back button area would be pretty easy. That would definitely stop the peeling there. At least the Call and End buttons are actually colored, so if those peel all the way it wouldn't be as bad.

I sent a message through Twitter to HTC asking if the peeling would be covered under warranty, this was their answer:

"htc - I'm not sure that is something that is supported, but I would call Sprint customer service and ask ASAP"

My End/Power button continued peeling, so I just went ahead and scraped (carefully!) the rest of the metallic coating off of the button. And even though it hadn't started peeling, I scraped all the coating off the green phone button as well. Now my End/Power button is solid red, the Answer/Phone button is solid green, and both buttons light up. IMO, it looks great. (Especially during the Christmas season!)

My fiance has an early model (got it the day it released) and doesn't have the "with Google" on the backplate and her's feels a lot "cheaper" than mine which is a later model with the "with Google".

I have joined the club of peeling red end buttons. Anyone have any luck with getting theirs replaced on the cheap?

I took clear vinyl with adhesive backing and covered mine right after i bought it after hearing about this. Seidio Innocase, Zagg screen protector and the bottom portion covered with 3M clear vinyl. Im all protected!

Both my call and end buttons have been peeling for a while now. Took the phone back to Best Buy, but since it was past (way past) 30 days, they said to take it to Sprint. Took it to Sprint today, they said they couldn't do anything, it's just cosmetic -- call or email HTC. Talked to a level 3 (or something like that) support person at Sprint on the phone, and he said it's a known issue, but as of yet HTC hasn't classified it as a defect that would warrant replacement. So he said to definitely email/call HTC to complain. I plan to do so tomorrow. Pretty soon my buttons will be almost solid red/green, and I have a feeling the piece with the menu/search/home/back buttons may start peeling eventually as well.

I bought mine the day it was released. Build date of 9/22/2009 and my end/power button is peeling too. It's starting to drive me crazy. My wife's is not peeling, but she's only had hers for a month. I think I might just peel both the green and the red buttons too.

My wife and I have had ours for about 2 months at the most. Her end button is peeling. Mine has not peeled but if I look at it closely I can see that it looks like it wants to. This really sucks. I can't believe HTC used stickers...stickers on an expensive phone. Sweet!
