My Note8 keeps freezing on standby

So the SD card definitely isn't the problem. Phone just froze again. I've done everything I could think of.

Called TMobile for a warranty exchange. Fingers crossed the new phone has no issues.

Good luck. Keep us updated.

I haven't had the best of luck with Note devices, between this and the Note 7. Only other Samsung device I had was the S7 Edge, and besides not re-gaining reception after I enter/leave my garage, I had no problems with it. Certainly never froze.

As for not wanting to hard reset, I can (and have) eliminated apps one by one to test if that's what's causing it. That hasn't helped.

As donm527 said, it's a pain, especially when chances are that it won't permanently solve the problem.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this started happening around the time of the last update (at least in my case). That was about the same time I started using a microSD though, so who knows which it is. But I've had the device since pre-order, and there was no freezing before that.

I do appreciate everyone's suggestions though. I'm a Jump on Demand customer, so chances are I'll be switching phones at some point in the not too distant future anyway. Probably an S9, but hopefully the Nokia 9 if that comes stateside.

Samsung makes it easy to copy/backup to a PC and later restore. Couldn't be easier.

Had an SD problem that caused issues and only by pulling it did II know for sure.

Had terrible battery drain, high battery temps, would drop to zero over night. Bought an identical BlackBerry DTEK 60 to test.

Wiped the problem unit, problems gone. I was 300% certain it was hardware. Problem never came back.

Moral of story, clean install. Like doing chkdsk on corrupt volume to fix directory, map out bad sectors.

If you want to know "Why."

Got my replacement device on Wed. I haven't had any freezing yet but that doesn't mean anything. It used to happen on the old phone at random times. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

I too have Jump on Demand so I may only keep this phone until the s9 as well. It depends on what the down payment looks like. T-Mobile kind of ruined JOD with the latest change requiring money down.

I'm experiencing the same issues as described above. Did the replacement phone rectify the issue?

I cannot believe it. Woke up this morning to a frozen replacement phone. I just don't know what to say at this point. I did not restore from backup. It must be a common basic app that is causing this. I'm so damn irritated and confused.

We might just have to compare what we have installed.

Here are some apps that I installed yesterday or within the last two days that I know isn't on someone else's phone that doesn't have this problem:

Lifx
Ally Mobile
SmartThings
Amcrest View Pro (don't believe I had this on the old phone)
LG TV Plus
Instacart
Uber Eats
Swiftly Switcher (don't think this is the problem as I uninstalled before and I still had the issue but listing anyway)

For those of you experiencing this problem tell me if any of these apps are in your phone.

Do you use any debloat/optimizing apps? Or have you disabled any system apps? Those measures can cause random problems like this.

I've had a T-Mobile Note 8 (with SD card) since September and it has never frozen.

Nope. Haven't disabled a thing. I barely installed any apps on this replacement device for this purpose. And installed everything brand new from the Play Store.

And you're still trying the replacement phone with no SD card? That's frustrating and puzzling.

Can you leave it in Safe Mode (at least overnight) and see if it still freezes? And can you list the apps you have installed?

I had a similar issue with freezing while on AOD and charging a few times as linked below but since my last update and every charge cycle since then it has never come back. BUT... in last two weeks I have had it lock on me on the AOD (off charge) twice about a week apart. For me coincidentally it happens at around same time... 11:30 pm and 11:31pm.

I don't think it's a hardware issue... it happens for me too far apart and with my original issue it's seems to have stopped. I'm pretty sure IMO it's a software issue.

My guess... it's some conflict with the AOD because it only happens when AOD is running/phone on standby and I am thinking it may be a notification from an app that ends up triggering it.

So I have gone into the AOD notification settings to manually disable any apps I don't want to notify on the AOD screen and enabled only the ones I want. I also have AOD disabled from midnight to 5am just because I feel I don't need it to be displaying when I'm asleep and as benefit use less battery then. It's been about a week since and haven't gotten another freeze so we'll see.

I would guess if AOD was disabled completely then the freezing issue might go away... For me it only happened twice like this and a week apart but I do like AOD on the see the time during day and any notifications like email or messaging so I haven't tested so it's not annoying me that much and I'm hoping future Security/bug/app updates just nips it in the bud.

If it does happen again, I sometimes do a new year phone erase/reset on my phones and I might do that. But I do think it's a software issue.

Try disabling AOD or try to eliminate unwanted AOD notifications and test. Disable all of them and start with essentials like email and chat and go from there.

Good luck.

I put my SD card back in since I determined that it was still freezing despite having it removed.

I can try safe mode but sometimes I can go days without a freeze.

I will list my apps. But I think if it's an app it's probably one of the ones I listed previously

I've had AOD to turned off for most of the time since getting the new phone. It has not been on in the past three days at least.. so that's not the source of the problem for me.

Interesting. Well there can be many ways a phone locks/crashes.

The list of apps you posted aren't that many and if not essential daily apps, why don't you uninstall those 8 first and test for a couple days and start from there. If it doesn't crash you could lean towards the idea that those 8 are not the ones causing conflict.

Yea. I'm going to start with those. That makes sense. Was just curious to see if others who are experiencing the problem have any of those apps installed.

It would have been interesting if I found a common app in that list but I don't have any of those installed.

I didn't even get a chance to remove all of the apps that I listed but my phone froze again.

I'm just too busy to try to keep troubleshooting. I may just jump ship. This is crazy.

Wow. Sorry. Well from your experience I can rule out going the replacement route.

I finally just bought a new phone; imported an unlocked copper Nokia 8. Loving it so far, and VoLTE and WiFi calling are working on T-Mobile, surprisingly.

Meanwhile, an update for the T-Mobile Note 8 is going around. I just updated mine. Now that I got a new phone, this Note 8 update will probably fix this freezing bug -_-

I was considering jumping to a much cheaper device if I keep this Nokia 8. Hard for me to justify keeping two new, several-hundred-dollar devices. But if the freezing bug is fixed I'll be tempted to sell this Nokia 8 I just bought.

First thing's first, let's see if this update fixes things. I'll report back with any observations.

If it's the December update then it didn't work for me. I installed it yesterday.

The problem is I have no idea what I would get instead of a Note 8. I'm really bummed.

Oh really? Your phone already froze after the update? I think it started going out OTA yesterday. I had to manually check for updates to find mine.

Honestly I think it may be time to give up on the phone officially if this update didn't fix it - in your case anyway. Maybe an S8 Plus?
