New EVO Battery Life Sticky: Please Contribute

Where do you turn off the always-on mobile off?
Download "SwitchPro Widget" from the market. When you configure the widget, select 3g, wifi, and if you use 4g select that to plus what ever else you want. You can easily turn the networks on and off as you please. It saves a TON of battery when you don't leave 3g, wifi, or 4g on. If you have any more questions about it just ask. A lot of people on this forum use SwitchPro.

I did the batter calibration that was posted earlier in this thread and have had a significant increase in battery life since. So I'm a believer. Here are the steps for anyone who wants to try it:

To calibrate the battery...
With the phone in the on position.
Fully charge the battery with the phone on... (until the led turns green.)
Once the led turns green, unplug the charger until the led goes off.
After the led goes off, plug the charger back in. When the led turns green , power off the phone.
now.... with the phone fully powered off...
1. Unplug the charger.
2. Wait until led goes off.
3. Plug charger back in until the led turns green. When it turns green, unplug the charger again and go to step 1.
4. repeat steps 1 and 3, 10 times. This may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 mins per cycle. Typically only about 1 minute. though.
In case it hasn't been stated yet, the problem with how batteries charge while in the phone is that they go to 100% and go into standby where they are no longer charging. The phone will actually be anywhere between 90-100% and will still read as 100% when you take it off the charger. Thats why it seems like you get more battery life when you are unplugging it and charging it again. Its just topping it off.

The one setting that makes the biggest difference for me is turning off "always on mobile data". When I reset on my phone I couldn't figure out why I was using so much more battery than before I did the reset even though I had everything set the same... then I realized that I forgot to turn off "always on mobile data".

How do you turn off this feature? Where is it located? I went through every menu in Settings and couldn't find it. I go through two batteries a day easily.

Try the 3750mAh battery. Here it is, 18 hours after I unplugged my EVO from its night charger and I'm on 45% charge remaining.

Just add the widget, that's the easiest way. Add widget - Settings - click on the down arrow - choose Mobile Network.

Does this mean I have to turn it back on every time I go online or use a data-retrieving app? Just wondering what exactly I will be 'missing' while it's turned off and how much of a time-waster it is to always have to toggle it on/off?

Thanks!

I dunno guys, I guess I just got tired of turning the features off on my phone all of the time just to receive decent battery life. I bought the Seidio Innocell extended battery and the results are out of this world lol. My phone runs for three days on heavy use with accounts syncing every hour. Feels good man. My EVO was getting 4-6 hours of battery life before I made the shift. It is awesome that you guys found so many ways to help with the battery tho, I just don't believe that we should have to do this

Juice defender app does this when the screen goes off.

I had a grasp on battery life, until a few days ago. I was getting 15-16hrs with moderate to heavy voice calls, tons of texting and email. now today I was at 20% after 6hrs!

For those that don't use 4g at all or not very often, removing the 4g widget on any of the homescreens can help. See number 1 in this post at XDA:

xda-developers - View Single Post - Evo Battery Tips and Explanations **Updated 12-4-10**

This is what was found:

^^^^**** IMPORTANT DISCOVERY****^^^^
When you turn on your 4G radio, then turn it off, it will keep scanning and turning off all by itself.
The problem is apparently exacerbated by a 4G toggle widget, which causes the phone to automatically turn on 4G at boot. This repeating of scanning and disconnecting severely drains battery life, and sadly, no matter what ROM or kernel you use, there is only one way to fix it:
-If you don’t use the toggle widget, then you have to reboot your phone after turning off 4G
-If you do use a toggle widget, then you have to remove the widget from your homescreens, then turn off 4G via settings, then reboot.
**To check to see if this is happening, download alogcat off of the market. Look for the lines saying: I/Wimax ( xxx): <DC> Try to establish a connection to DC server.
E/Wimax ( xxx): <DC CONNECT> IO error: msg=’/xxx.x.x.x:xxxx –
Connection refused’
Over and over again.

So in other words, if you use a 4g toggle widget, after the phone boots, it will keep scanning for a 4g connection even when 4g is off.

Even without using a toggle widget and using the control from within the menu, I'm having the problem with the phone constantly searching for a 4G network, after turning it off.

This one is horrible, trust me. It's only slightly greater in its capacity than is the 1500mAh one. If you want an extended battery that is awesome, look for the bigger Seidio one, the 3500mAh.

I got one off Ebay for less than 10 bucks, figuring I threw my $ away, but it actually gives me 7-8 hours over the 4-5 I was getting. Came with a decent new back and fits the charger. Phone still fits my belt case, too

Those are the Chinese-made knock-offs, which are OK. I bought the original Seidio one when it was on sale on Amazon, and it lasts me 18-36 hours on a single charge.

I just don't understand the 1-2 day battery life claims. I use my phone - a lot - and have it set the way I want. I could probably hook up a car battery and barely get two days of use. It trolls for 4g, because we are on track to get it very soon. It checks for emails a couple times an hour. I do not listen to music. I do watch some videos/TV and things recorded on my Dish receiver. Oh, yeah, it makes phone calls too and a few texts. I'm 99% sure that a $50 battery would not give me 6 times the up-time of this cheapo. It may well "wear out" much sooner than a "name" brand, that remains to be seen. I'll surely get another phone before I would get my money's worth. Anyhow, it seems the phone is taking too much of my time, anyway, it's just nice to have something to do while waiting at the doctor's office, and such.
