New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19 | $300

Polls have shown the sweet spot for cell phones is $200, Virgin knows it. Even Apple knows it, this is why all phones are subsidized down to that level or more for contract phones.

Virgin can get a bit more and did so with the Blackberry, but it was the first and only smartphone they offered. With them already having 2 android phones, trying to sell a $300 phone, much less a $350 one would be a hard sell unless it was a high end phone. Prepaid or not, not many will pay $350 for a mid level phone. My guess is that it will probably peak at about $250 or so, maybe $300, but I doubt it. Over $300 and I would predict it to be dead on arrival.

That depends.
A rooted and overclocked OV runs about the same as a stock OV running at 1gig (the bloat is equal to 150-200mhz, no kidding). The Triumph is a 1gig phone and you can bet it will have a bunch of junk on it, just like the stock OV does.

So yes, in stock form it rips all over the stock OV, but what if they can't root it? At that point, my nice OV is about on par with it. The only serious advantage will be if this thing can handle flash, which would be nice to have at times, but really, you don't need it.

IF they price this around $200 and someone unlocks it (or it comes with no bloat, fat chance!), I'll consider it. Otherwise, I will stick with my OV. It's rooted, paid for and does what I want.

Are you kidding,in no way will the processor in the V compare or even come close to the snapdragon 1 ghz processor in the Triumph, bloatware removed or overclocked or not, that is just one of the craziest statements i have heard, you V fanboys have to face reality, this phone rooted or not will out perform the V hands down.and the only thing it has over th V is flash you need to read the specs of the Triumph again. The V is a nice entry level phone, but in terms of smartphones it is outdated..

^^^ technically speaking, the Triumph is outdated as well so thats irrelevant...but i do agree that a second generation snapdragon processor, the same one used in the thunderbolt and lg revolution, along with a adreno 205 GPU, the phone does put it well above whats capable of the LG Optimus V. I think that one thing it comes down to is, who cares if you have a snapdragon processor, or dual core cpu yadda yadda yadda, if your just surfing the web, playing angry birds, and texting...most people wouldn't see a big difference in going from say the Optimus V to the Triumph (I've compared usual tasks against a Thunderbolt to that of my rooted V). With saying that, i plan on buying the Triumph because of the larger screen, if it can be rooted then thats a bonus, but hdmi mirroring is a nice perk too...in the end we all have more options, so win win

I still cannot figure out why people think the Triumph is a mid range phone. I mean it beats every phone in Sprints lineup. Sure there are phones on other networks & future phones that are better but that does not make the Triumph mid range especially since it shares the same specs (3rd gen snapdragon) as other high end phones. Dual core phones are all the rage but doesn't the OV have 3 cores? Also how do you overclock the OV over 2ghz like you can with the Triumph processor?

I have no idea why everyone keeps calling it a mid ranged phone. Hell, I heard the optimus was a mid ranged phone, how in the HELL is the triumph one?

The V is a budget phone, the Triumph is a mid range phone and the iphone/Evo 3D, LG3D, is the higher end phones.

the Optimus V is a buget mid range phone

Triumph is a lot better but still a mid range. It ships with 2.2, only 5MP camera, no 4G speeds. Older display, wvga compared to the qHD in newer motorola phones

Unlocked boot loader is a possibility

"Motorola has announced we will enable an unlockable/relockable bootloader in future software releases where channel and operator partners will allow it. It is our intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011."

"where channel and operator partners (aka carriers) will allow it."

But only is virgin mobile will allow it...

I dont think any carriers want unlockable bootloader, I read somewhere that VM is not the exception either.

The iPhone is more of a mid range to higher end phone, because its outclassed by phones like LG G2x and say the EVO 3D...I believe the Triumph internals are very similar to the Thunderbolt, which is no slouch by the way, minus less memory, the TB has 768mb while the Triumph has 512

The bigger screen is intriguing but not worth it to me.

you get a lot more then a bigger screen
much better processor
HDMI output
5MP camera plus front facing camera
thinner profile
larger display and highr pixel count

What is the V? The Optimus One (aka Optimus V on Virgin Mobile) was always sold as a mid range phone. By definition it did not have any specs which matched high end phones when it was released. Just because VM choose to sell it cheaper than other carriers does not make it a budget phone. The Triumph tops all phones Sprint currently offers, high end or not. Are we gonna start comparing the Triumph to phones that come out 10 years from now just to say its not high end? Give me a break. The Triumph is high end, OV is mid, and Intercept is entry level.

I notice ur scope of comparison are only locked carrier phones but if u search unlocked phones u will find that 1.2-1.5ghz has been around for about 2 years now. the HTC shift GSM MPC (MobilePC not the sprint phone) is a good example even tho the form factor was alittle large it released 4 years ago and has a 1ghz cpu but its more like a tab than a cell phone. Plus the concept of it being a mid-level phone is because u don't compare a device against what has been out like a reviewer would. You compare it to what is coming out as its being sold because those are what u are going to be able to choose from if u wait out the hype. And yes the Triumph is a high end phone compared to the OV but the OV wasn't a new released phone just another port of an alrdy OLD phone.

Have they posted dimensions yet? I like the idea of a larger screen, but phones like the thunderbolt are just to big for me.

Yep since this is a VM forum and VM only allows locked phones all of us would be talking about locked phones. I've seen PC's in Asia with over 100 cores, years ago however it would be foolish to compare those with the average PC used in the US today. With specs that match and are better than other carriers entire lineup I'd consider it a high end device. Sure it's not the best, sure it has inexpensive parts but considering today's high end market, I believe this device is just that. Hopefully VM gives it a low end price like they did the OV.

I never said the OV was as fast or faster, I said about on par (as in close) and I was referring to a very tweaked OV. I'm not denying that it will still lose.

At some point all of that speed only gets diminished returns (you don't need a Core I7 to browse the web!). As long as nothing lags, and my phone rarely lags, then all of that extra speed will go unused. The only thing that will do significantly better, is run flash. Is it faster, of course! It's a newer processor, and faster.

You mentioned the specs, a lot of that depends on what you need the phone to do.
The HDMI port, odds are most will never use it. The bigger screen, means a bigger phone, that isn't always a good selling point. I do like the better camera and the more memory though.

I wonder what u would consider the low&mid ranged android devices being released this year is. Since I can't seem to find a lower grade device being released this year.
