Nexus 10 users, do you regret your purchase? The good and the bad.

I have the Asus TF700, Nexus 7, iPad 3 and mini, and the N10. I never realized that the N10 doesn't have a SD slot. I guess that's not very important to me on that device. I like the speed and display, and I use it for basic schematic capture and electronic simulation - the display makes it quite good for that. It's funny how the selection of simulation apps is better on Android than iPad,while iPad has much better drawing apps. I wish they'd either get some sim apps on the iPad or some good drawing apps on Android. But as for regrets? No. The N10 is a wonderful tool. It is the only pad I've found with decent sound, so when I'm on the road - and I get good wifi, which is really iffy in motels - I can watch movies. It is a good substitute for a laptop as far as apps are concerned and in my narrow range of use - although despite the bloggers wailing about the post-PC era, I don't see anything taking the place of my computer when I actually need to sit and work for more than 20 minutes.

However, truth to tell is that there are a crap-ton of good 10" tabs out there. Asus is leading the pack right now, but Samsung is doing a good job - I find their Note tempting. Apple is better in some ways in terms of apps, and I like their display aspect ratio better than anything in Android. I wish there was a maker who would adopt that ratio. If I were you I'd look at the stores for apps, then base my decision on that.

I've had my Nexus 10 for two weeks now. Love this thing! I don't regret it one bit. My previous tablet history is a Nook Color running CM7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 (my girlfriend has that now), Nexus 7, and now the 10, 32 gig version. I'm using Nova Launcher Prime.
The screen is gorgeous, and the sound out of the front facing speaking is great for a tablet. This thing is fast!
One the downside... a 64 gig version would have been spot on for me. I've got 25+ gigs of music that I would have loved to store locally. I just stream it. I knew the storage limitations before I bought it. Not a huge deal.
The only other downside I can think of is that there are two game apps that don't run well on it: Machinarium, and Waking Mars. My Note 2 runs them perfectly, but the N10 won't. I'm sure that an app update will fix that in the future, could be screen resolution related.
Absolutely no regrets here.

My biggest complaint was that it didn't have a micro SD slot. I resolved this by going to get a USB OTG adapter. They sell for about a dollar or so on amazon and you can use any USB storage to stream videos with it. The only downside is you need a $3 app from the app store to run it called Nexus Media Importer. You need root to have read/write access to the USB storage, but if you just want to watch movies, then no root required. There's also the option to have cloud accounts like Dropbox or Google Drive. Again, not a huge deal because of all the options.
Silly question- does it read directly from the drive or will it copy the file over to the device, and then read it?
I haven't been doing my homework on this part, so I'm rather confused about how that works :)

Thanks, I'll do that. Although the whole app-thing isn't that big of a bother to me (yet)- since they are slowly catching up, one after another.
Since I'd mostly be using my tablet for staying organized, entertainment, browsing and movie-watching, I don't think most cons listed are going to be a deal-breaker for me.

I am happy with my N10.

For me, if I didn't have a tablet and was planning on getting one I would buy the N10. I've not heard of anything in the pipeline that will be available to purchase in the next 3 months. And that is my cut off. 6 months into the life of the top device I expect the next advancement to be worth waiting an aditional 3-4 months to purchase.

I firmly believe the N10 to remain on top for android for another 6 months.

Before you start comparing pros and cons of a device take a moment and figure out WHAT you want from a tablet and HOW you plan to use it. The N10 is right for me, but I readily admit it isn't the best tab for note taking. It has a beautiful screen but that is worthless if you are not viewing things that take advantage of it. I like the option of HDMI out but I've only needed it a couple of times[I am really hoping KLP unlocks miracast]. I don't need to carry it for days without charging son the battery life is sufficient for me.

Figure out how you're going to use your Tablet, then pick the two that best fit your usage then worry about a particular device's pros &cons

Thanks for your input :)

Well, close to any tablet on the market would fit my needs tbh. I'm just looking for one that would handle them best.
Keeping me organized, watching movies, gaming, browsing, not so much note-taking, but I definitely see myself carrying this around wherever I go (work, school, home, caf?s).
I know that I won't actually need a tablet with 3G or LTE support, because I'll have a phone with me at all times that will be my wi-fi hotspot if I ever need it to be. I'm not often at places that don't offer free wifi anyway, so that won't be a problem.
I've been looking out for newer Samsung-releases but apart from the Galaxy tab 8, there doesn't seem to be anything until Q3-Q4, and by then who knows what the next best thing is going to be?

I'm planning on having this one tablet purchase and have it last me for 2-3 years before I'll seriously need to upgrade to a newer model.

Since I've just bought the Sony Xperia Z phone, I thought I may give that tablet a chance if I fell inlove with the phone enough, but all that comes down to price and how that tablet would compare to the N10. But I know they are different in many ways.

Edit: ywhisper reminded me of something that really is annoying: the lack of any ?official" accessories for the Nexus 10 (not just the dock). It is kind of puzzling why there aren't any official cases, docks, chargers, etc., especially now that it's been about 5 months since it was released.

All trolls aside.

This thing has been awesome. no lag on my end (except for when i disable HW overlays in dev settings, in other words don't do it) Haven't seen anything out there that would make me want to switch. I guess the main features would be if I wanted to use a stylus more, but then get the note tab. doesn't have infra red which is where everything is going back to but thats minor.

Oh the other pet peeve is the lack of a dock from Google, which is nothing new.

Yeah I've definitely been wondering about this one, it feels a little weird that Google still hasn't released anything official, accessory-wise for this tablet... And it also bothers me that it hasn't been added to my country's play store. (Sweden)
This is kind of why I am led to believe that Google I/O in May might have something to reveal, but that still feels ages away. But still, an upgraded N10 feels kinda unrealistic since everyone seems to mainly be zoning in on a new and improved N7.

...Oh well, accessories isn't everything I guess, even if they would've been nice.

People like to complain though.

Esoically that Snoo Snoo fellow. He must have a fun life with as much time as he spends trolling Android forums.

I've never regretted purchasing the Nexus 10 and I ordered mine within an hour of it becoming available. Mine even still has random reboot issues but it only does it when the tablet is laying idle so it doesn't cause me any problems.

No regrets at all. I was unsure whether I actually would use it all that much, but they are like air-conditioning and power door locks... You don't know how great they are until you have them. One of the best things is the battery life. I watched 5 hours of 720p video the other day and still had 48% battery left. Plugged it in (on a pogo charge cable) for an hour and a half while I was away for lunch and it was fully charged when I returned.

It may be fun for him but it's still sad and pathetic. He obviously couldn't last 2 posts into an argument with me seeing as he hasn't come back after I replied to his latest troll fail.

And you're still getting reboots? That's weird.

Yeah, I actually sat it down about 2-3 minutes after I replied earlier and I noticed it light up out of the corner of my eye. That's how I usually notice it rebooting. Kinda sucks but it really doesn't bother me. When I go back into Chrome all my tabs are still there. I suspect that Chrome is causing the rebooting but I don't know that for sure.

I'm pretty sure they fixed Chrome with the last update, but as long as it isn't a big issue for you. (Y)

This is the sweetest most BA tablet ever I've had 3 others before this and I'll never buy a non nexus device again I love the updates and the development for them I have a galaxy nexus also and love it as well so yes no regrets here at all and no lag whatsoever as well.

sent from the baddest of the bad the Nexus 10 that's right don't be jealous!

Here's my thoughts.

I've come "up" from an HP TouchPad with Android on it, so I'm not unfamiliar with a 10" tablet. On the way, I've had a Kindle Fire HD (Don't buy one if you want anything more than Amazon can offer), a Nexus 7 (great little 7" tablet) and now the Nexus 10.

Good points. Note I'm looking at the 10 here - not Android in general.

1. The screen resolution. I love it. It means I can remote to my desktop and get the full 1900 x 1200 display.
2. The speed. It is fast. No question about that. I thought my Touchpad was good, but this just flies.
3. The battery life. I use it mainly for browsing web sites, reading news, playing the odd game and watching videos. I only need to charge it up every other day.
4. The sound. Having the speakers front facing means you get the clearest sound possible. Very nice when I'm lying in the bath listening to music.
5. The knowledge that I will be first in line for any Android upgrade.
6. No fancy overlay to the O/S. So, I can choose how it looks and what gets loaded.
7. The price. Anything with roughly the same specs is a lot more money.

Now for the "bad" points (none of which stop me from liking it).

1. No memory expansion (i.e. Micro SD slot). It would have been so easy. I've got Nexus Media Importer and an OTG cable - but it's not as convenient.
2. This issue of the time drifting if location access is turned on.
3. Wifi - it's only when the signal is low, but it will sometimes lose connectivity. My TouchPad does the same thing, so it may be an Android thingy, but my Nexus 7 doesn't - so maybe it's an antenna issue with 10" tablets.
4. It doesn't come rooted. I'm used to a rooted tablet from my TouchPad. One day I will get around to it, but I would love to be able to do it without losing all my stuff.

That's about it. No other tablet comes near it - it's well worth the price.

I hope this helps.

Alan

What schematic and simulation apps do you use?

sent from a Nexus, nothing less will do...

The best one I've found so far is iCircuit, with Tesla close behind. Tesla does allow you to keep circuits online, but they are shared with the user base. Which is OK unless you are working on something proprietary. But if that's what you're doing you're probably not using such a basic sim - more likely Orcad or, for a less expensive option, Tina or (free) LTSpice on a PC. These android guys are mostly useful for acting as more or less scratchpads that can tell you if your design meets a basic sanity check.

I'll put it this way, I have an iPad 4, a Nexus 7&10, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (original with the tegra chip) and the only ones I really ever use are the Nexus 7 &10. I love the N10 more than any other tablet beside my N7. For a 10 inch tablet it's one of the best out. It handles everything I throw at it. I did actually consider the Sony Xperia Z tablet because it's waterproof and the tab looks awesome, but I'm pretty happy with my N10. Of course I may get the Sony Z tab for the hell of it lol

This is my first tablet, I was thinking of getting a Windows 8 hybrid but I came to the conclusion that its probably too soon, they have a lot of catching up to do. Do I like it? I love it most of the time, and when I don't its just because the whole environment is new to me. I'm retired now having started working on an IBM 360/30 back in 1969, and having had a successful career in IT management. So I'm very used to mainframes and PC's and their language, but not android, so I'm on a learning curve. I got great help on here last week and am trying to pick up stuff from the forums so I don't bug you too much. Reading this thread there is a reference to a 'rooted' device. That's new language to me, what does it mean, and what are the pros and coins - or is this off topic?
Thanks, Chris

Rooted sort of unlocks your device adding superuser permissions unlocking Wifi tethering things like that

No regrets at all!

I had a Galaxy tab 10.1 before this, and I honestly wasn't expecting the N10 to be that big an upgrade...but I was wrong. The OS is smooth and fast, the display is great, the size and feel of the tablet is perfect -- and more importantly, it serves my needs perfectly. Being a Nexus device, it's great to get Android updates almost immediately, and it was very easy to root (if that's your thing -- you certainly don't have to root to enjoy the N10).
