You are correct, if you buy a phone from T Mobile and they give you monthly installments, you also have a 2 year contract with that. Best to buy the phone from Google Play and charge it on a credit card.

I bought mine back in February when T-Mobile sold the 16GB model for $49, $0 after rebate. I got the phone, paid the first months bill and then cancelled the contract. I got a final bill of $115 and paid that and have been on a prepaid ever since. I got the phone for much less than what I would have paid at the Play Store.

If you pay the phone upfront there is no contract. If you wanna leave you just pay off the phone if your doing monthly payments.
